Chapter 66: Settling Down
Tauro had now been staying in the village for a month.
Dansas was growing livelier by the day.
One afternoon, Bob returned after a long absence spent touring the surrounding towns and villages.
“Welcome back, Bob.”
Tauro greeted him at the inn.
“I’m back, Tauro. The bad rumors had spread through the guilds in town even farther than I expected. Dealing with them was exhausting…”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Once I explained the curse and showed them the magic stone, the guild believed me. There was one person who refused, though…”
“Someone didn’t believe you?”
“The former chief of the Dansas branch.”
“Ah… I understand.”
That made sense to Tauro.
If the man had noticed the curse soon after taking office, it might never have become such a serious problem.
Two adventurers ranked E and F- had ultimately resolved it. If the former chief admitted that he hadn’t only failed to solve the problem but had never even noticed it before quitting in anger, his competence would be called into question. Naturally, he didn’t want to accept that.
“The guild seems to be considering new candidates, anyway. Dansas is fairly large for a village, and now that the problem is solved, I expect someone will be sent before long.”
“That’s a relief. Chloe is handling everything alone at the moment. It’s so much work that I’ve been helping her.”
“So much work? Have adventurers started coming from elsewhere?”
Bob asked in surprise.
“Thanks to you, we have two newcomers, one C-rank adventuring party from another area, and four solo adventurers.”
“The response was faster than I expected!”
“Several villages, mountains, and forests are easy to reach from here. Many nearby areas are also full of monsters, so there’s plenty of demand. Villages in the region have begun submitting quests too, since the guild in town is too far away.”
“I see… So quest requests are coming in now as well.”
“Yes. And the villagers have been waiting for you, Bob.”
“Huh? For me?”
“They want to thank the village hero properly. Please go to the village chief’s house.”
Tauro pushed Bob toward the door and sent him from the inn to the chief’s home.
Sorry, Bob! I’ve dumped the troublesome part on you!
Tauro had told the villagers that he had merely assisted Bob.
Once he framed it that way, they had little choice but to believe him.
After all, an eleven-year-old child being responsible for the victory was far less believable. It was only natural for them to accept Bob as the hero.
When Bob reached the village chief’s house, being treated as a hero bewildered him, and he explained that Tauro had been the true hero.
However, they mistook this for humility.
Tauro had warned them beforehand that Bob would modestly praise him and insisted they shouldn’t be misled.
Events unfolded exactly as Tauro had predicted, so the village chief believed his warning and interpreted Bob’s explanation as humble self-effacement.
What a modest adventurer! The chief took such a liking to Bob that he offered him one of the village’s vacant houses as thanks.
Bob initially refused, but it became difficult to do so after the chief explained that the villagers would feel safer if he lived among them.
Bob had already intended to make Dansas his base, so the offer was perfect for him. Still, he felt uncomfortable accepting a house for nothing.
He therefore agreed on the condition that he pay rent.
The rent was one silver coin.
Even that made Bob hesitate at first, but he relented when the chief said it would be a great help simply to have someone maintain the house.
Everything had proceeded according to the plan devised by Tauro and the village chief.
The chief wanted to reward Bob, while Tauro wanted the excessively kindhearted dogfolk adventurer to be happy. Their goals aligned, so they had planned the entire exchange from beginning to end.
Bob had been splendidly maneuvered in a good direction from the palm of Tauro’s hand.
When Bob returned to the inn and reported that he would be renting a house, Tauro celebrated inwardly.
Yes!
“I’ve decided to leave the inn and move into the house.”
“That’s wonderful! I’ll help you move.”
“It has plenty of rooms. Why don’t you come live there too, Tauro?”
Bob invited him.
“No, no. Save that room for your future wife.”
“Wh-what?! I haven’t decided to ask her to come yet!”
Bob was visibly shaken.
Apparently, he had a girlfriend.
Bringing her to Dansas would probably be better for her as well.
“So you do have a girlfriend! This is such a pleasant village now. Why not invite her here and live together? Yes, let’s do that.”
Before he realized it, Bob was nodding along with Tauro’s suggestion.
