Chapter 50: Trouble with the Viscount

Viscount Saisi repeated his request several times.

At first, he offered Tauro the lowest place among his retainers simply to add prestige to his household. When he learned that Tauro was only ten, his haughty offer changed: he would take the boy on as one of his personal pages.

That infuriated Branch Manager Leo. He rejected the proposal without even troubling Tauro, declaring that the boy was an important member of the guild.

The viscount’s messenger then approached Tauro directly.

He waited outside the guild and ambushed Tauro as he emerged.

Speaking as though he were coaxing an ordinary child, the messenger said that Tauro would serve as a playmate for the viscount’s children, live in luxury, and have an easy job.

Tauro naturally refused.

“I intend to continue living as an adventurer, so I must decline the offer. Please tell the lord that.”

Tauro believed he had answered politely, but however his words were relayed, the viscount flew into a rage.

He sent soldiers with orders to seize Tauro and bring him in. Territorial troops and adventurers faced one another outside the guild until Branch Manager Leo emerged to speak with the officer in charge.

“How did it come to this?”

Leo apparently knew the captain and asked him bluntly, without the least deference.

“The lord was told that the famous child insulted him by shouting, ‘As if I would accept terms like those!’ He’s absolutely furious.”

The captain spoke politely, suggesting that he knew Leo well.

“Famous?”

“Yes. The viscount heard rumors about a child adventurer who’s more popular than he’s in this town, and it displeased him. Then the messenger complained that the boy had insulted him, which led to all this.”

“Tauro isn’t someone who would say such a thing. If the lord listened properly to those rumors, he would know Tauro isn’t the sort to hurl abuse.”

“I told him the same thing…”

“In any case, I’ll speak with the lord. Get out of here before this becomes an even bigger disturbance.”

At Leo’s command, the territorial soldiers withdrew.

The incident sent ripples through the city.

The townspeople knew the good stories about Tauro.

Most recently, he had distinguished himself during the bandit subjugation, a story so famous that it had already become a puppet show.

Some people nevertheless began to suspect that the fame had gone to his head.

The speculation had no basis, but those spreading it made the story sound plausible.

The rumors divided the city and caused Tauro considerable pain.

“Don’t worry, Tauro. The rumors will soon die down. They’re completely baseless.”

Nei encouraged him out of concern.

“She’s right. Every adventurer here knows you’re a good person.”

The adventurers in the reception hall agreed with Nei and called out their support.

“Don’t let it bother you.”

“My son is one of Satou’s fans.”

“Only a handful of people believe that nonsense.”

Tauro’s heart filled with emotion.

The effort he had patiently accumulated seemed to have returned to him in the most important form of all: trust.

“Thank you, everyone.”

Tauro struggled to hold back his tears.

Several mornings later, territorial soldiers returned in a far more menacing mood.

“Is Tauro Satou here?”

As before, adventurers and soldiers faced one another outside the guild.

“Tauro, you mustn’t go out there.”

Tauro had been looking over the day’s posted quests and tried to step outside, but Nei stopped him.

A soldier entered the guild, spotted Tauro, and attempted to approach him. Adventurers moved between them, and a shoving match began.

Then the captain stepped forward.

“Tauro Satou, a warrant has been issued for your arrest on suspicion of belonging to the bandit gang. You’ll come with us quietly.”

He unfolded the warrant.

“An arrest warrant!?”

Not only Tauro but every adventurer and employee in the hall cried out in shock.
