Chapter 467: Mad Experiments
After finishing their tour of Magic-Tool Street, Tauro and Aeris moved to a broad, empty field near the edge of the territorial capital.
Like the Royal Capital, a ducal capital maintained several open areas that could be used for military assembly or temporary facilities during emergencies. One of those spaces offered enough isolation for Tauro’s experiment.
He removed a magic-restoration potion from [Magic Storage] and handed it to Aeris.
“What new ability are you testing this time?”
“It’s called [Adversity Ability Enhancement].”
Tauro announced the ominous name with complete calm.
“Tauro… should we call Zion here, just in case?”
Aeris immediately sensed danger and suggested bringing another healer.
“It should be fine. I have [Super Recovery and Regeneration], so with you here as well, there should be no problem.”
Tauro sounded confident. To Aeris, however, he was clearly returning to his old reckless habits.
“Very well. I’ve grown stronger too. If anything goes wrong, I’ll handle it, so don’t worry.”
Aeris prepared herself to accompany Tauro through another experiment.
“Then I’ll begin.”
Tauro adopted a serious expression and began chanting dark-spirit magic.
Aeris wasn’t an expert in the dark attribute, but the length and complexity of the chant made it obvious that he was preparing a high-level spell.
When the chant ended, Tauro pressed his right hand against his chest.
“[Advanced All-Status Ailment Magic]!”
He cast the attack spell on himself.
Tauro immediately clapped a hand over his mouth. Blood spilled between his fingers as he coughed and vomited.
“What are you doing, Tauro?!”
Aeris froze for an instant, then hurriedly began a healing spell. Tauro stopped her with one raised hand.
“I-It’s all right. This is… within the expected range…”
He struggled for breath, his face drained of color, yet forced himself to begin another chant.
“[Levitation]!”
Aeris halted her healing spell and stared.
Tauro’s body rose gently from the ground. Normally, [Levitation] could lift him only about one meter. In his critically weakened state, however, he continued upward until he was floating more than ten meters above the field.
“What’s happening?!”
“I-It worked…!”
Still pale and visibly suffering, Tauro smiled as he slowly descended.
“Does [Adversity Ability Enhancement] increase the power of your abilities whenever you’re in critical condition?”
“Exactly. I suspected that was the effect, but I had been reluctant to put myself in a genuinely critical state just to confirm it.”
Color gradually returned to Tauro’s face as [Super Recovery and Regeneration] worked inside his body. He would probably recover on his own, but Aeris couldn’t bear to watch him suffer and completed a healing spell anyway.
“Thank you. The ability appears to work exactly as I predicted.”
“Why are so many of your abilities strange?”
“They’re generally useful and beneficial.”
“That’s true. Those abilities have helped us survive many crises. Then once you recover, will [Levitation] return to normal?”
Tauro immediately tested it again.
This time, he rose only about one meter before stopping.
“I need to determine how the duration of [Adversity Ability Enhancement] relates to the recovery speed of [Super Recovery and Regeneration]. To be honest, [Advanced All-Status Ailment Magic] causes unbearable pain throughout the body.”
“Of course it does!”
Aeris’s reply came instantly.
“A spell like that could drive an ordinary person mad from pain, or even kill them through shock.”
“I possess [Abnormal Status Resistance], so I can endure severe pain.”
Tauro answered as though that settled the matter.
“I know, but is there not a healthier method?”
“Would stabbing myself in the stomach with a dagger be preferable to making my entire body hurt?”
“Don’t do that! What sane person would watch someone stab himself in the stomach to test an ability without trying to stop him? I’ve already seen far too much of this behavior from you.”
Aeris glared at him resentfully.
“I truly appreciate everything you do for me,” Tauro said with an awkward laugh.
“Enough. Are you continuing the experiments? I’ve come this far, so I’ll remain until the end.”
“All right. Next, we’ll test it with an abdominal wound-“
And so Tauro and Aeris continued their mad experiments.
