Chapter 374: Making a Gift
After lunch, Tauro’s group visited Dragon’s Breath Armory to purchase magic stones.
The armory had the largest selection of equipment and materials in the Dragonfolk Village, and its third floor contained an extensive magic-stone department. Tauro had bought stones there several times before.
He approached the familiar shopkeeper and requested the best light- and darkness-attribute stones available.
“Hohoho. For light, I recommend this stone from a Sanctuary Giant. For darkness, this one came from an Underground-Crawling Black Mist. It’s expensive, but the creature inhabits Floor 250 and rarely leaves a magic stone. We can’t predict when another will become available.”
Because the buyer was Tauro, the shopkeeper offered both at a very reasonable price.
“I see. The darkness stone is especially interesting.”
Tauro examined both with [True Eye] and confirmed their quality.
“I’ll take them.”
“Thank you very much!”
The shopkeeper released the security spell on the display case and handed over the stones. Tauro paid for them and placed them in [Magic Storage].
“Let’s return to Drago and Ragune’s house. I want to modify Zion’s gauntlets.”
They carried out the work in the garden of the siblings’ residence.
Tauro intended to incorporate the Sanctuary Giant’s light stone into the right gauntlet and the Underground-Crawling Black Mist’s darkness stone into the left. To be safe, he first drank a magic-restoration potion and replenished his magical power completely.
“I’ll begin with the right gauntlet. [Creation Magic (Weak)]!”
The gauntlet and the Sanctuary Giant stone shone brilliantly in his hands. The light faded almost immediately, but Tauro dropped to one knee.
“Leader!” Ankh cried.
“Tauro, are you all right?” Ragune rushed to his side.
“It consumed considerably more magical power than I expected. That’s an exceptional stone.”
Supported by Ankh, Tauro drank another restoration potion.
“Please don’t be reckless,” Ankh said. “Watching you do this is terrifying.”
“He’s right,” Ragune added. “You can’t possibly attempt the other one now.”
“I still want to know whether [Creation Magic (Weak)] can use material from as deep as Floor 250. If I reach my limit, I’ll try stopping the spell midway.”
“You’ve never stopped it midway before,” Ragune said. “Where do these ideas come from?”
“There’s only one way to learn.”
Tauro restored his magical power once more, picked up the left gauntlet and the darkness stone, and began.
“[Creation Magic (Weak)]!”
The two objects began to shine.
A violent chill ran through Tauro.
This is dangerous. I don’t have enough magical power.
Trusting that instinct, he interrupted the spell.
To Ankh and Ragune, the flash looked no different from the first one. Tauro, however, believed the attempt had failed. His magical power vanished completely, and he collapsed unconscious.
When Tauro opened his eyes, he was lying in a bed inside Drago’s house. Drago was watching over him.
“You’re awake, Lord Tauro. Thank goodness. Your companions restored magical power directly to your body, but the situation was extremely dangerous. Please don’t attempt anything like that again.”
“Your heart stopped for a moment, Leader,” Ankh said, leaning over the bed. “I truly thought we had lost you.”
“You do this far too often,” Ragune said, on the verge of tears. “It’s terrible for our hearts.”
“I’m sorry. A magic stone from Floor 250 was apparently beyond what my [Creation Magic (Weak)] could handle.”
“Was it?” Ankh raised the left gauntlet. “The modification appears to have succeeded.”
“What?”
Tauro took the gauntlet and examined the completed pair with [True Eye].
Opposing Demon Gauntlets
• A matched pair of gauntlets combining light and darkness for both offense and defense.
• The right gauntlet carries the light attribute and increases offensive and defensive power.
• The left gauntlet carries the darkness attribute and can randomly inflict powerful abnormal conditions when it strikes. It also causes mental pain to the wearer, so strong willpower is required.
• Equipping both gauntlets allows the wearer to activate [Berserker].
The right gauntlet was excellent. The left, however, could hardly be called an uncomplicated success when its burden on the wearer was considered.
Tauro put on the left gauntlet and went outside. When he struck a rock in the garden, a black haze flowed into the stone and a powerful vibration cracked it apart.
At the same instant, pain surged through Tauro’s entire body.
His resistance to abnormal conditions and darkness made it tolerable, but Zion might not possess the same protection.
“I can use it, but will Zion be all right?”
Tauro couldn’t decide whether the gift he had worked so hard to complete was safe to give its intended owner.
