Chapter 354: Entering the Capital [with notice]

Tauro and his party decided to leave the city early the next day and head for the territorial capital.

They decided that there was not a single good thing to be gained by staying longer.

Perhaps because of the snitching system, they are very wary of strangers, and if something seems even the slightest bit suspicious, like last night, they will be reported immediately.

For us outsiders, it felt like we were exposed on a bed of needles.*

So, first thing in the morning, we immediately boarded the horse-drawn carriage to the territorial capital.

The journey by carriage to the capital took half a day.

After crossing a mountain pass on the way, the capital was spread out in a basin surrounded by mountains.

“It’s surprisingly big.”

Ankh leaned out of the carriage and spoke of his impressions of the territorial capital.

“…… you guys, the only checkpoints here are at the entrances and exits of the capital, but be careful what you say and do once you are in there. It is not a place for outsiders to stay long.”

A bearded man, the coachman, warned Tauro and his party, who were the only guests.

“……what the hell is that?”

 Tauro asks the coachman back.

“You guys have a lot of women and children, and I wouldn’t want to lose sleep if something happened to you. That’s all. ……”

The coachman replied and kept his mouth shut.

‘Thank you for the advice……we’ll be careful.”

Tauro thanked the man on behalf of all of them.

The carriage carrying Tauro and his group was stopped at a checkpoint in the capital, and unlike the citizens of the capital, who were mostly passing through, When they were stopped, they had their belongings searched, physical examination, purpose of the trip, and itinerary up to this point by means of a permit, but they were able to pass through without incident.

 At that moment,

“Travelers who are new to the capital are supposed to be accompanied by a guide for the entire day.”

I was told that “a traveler who is new to the capital is supposed to be accompanied by a guide for the entire day.**Not out of kindness or anything like that, but out of total surveillance.

Tauro wanted to refuse, but he could tell by the look in the soldier’s eyes that he was not in that mood.

He was not being kind, but completely watchful.

“……Okay.”

Tauro agreed on behalf of everyone, and a man came out from the back.

He didn’t introduce himself, just stood there absentmindedly.

It doesn’t look like he wants to show us around though. ……

Tauro made eye contact with Ragune and the others, but it seems that they may just treat him as invisible.

“Well, how about we get an Inn somewhere first and do some sightseeing today?”

“Yes, I think so. ─ ─Guide-san, do you know of any good inns, good restaurants, or tourist attractions?”

Ankh asks the (temporary) guide because there was nothing to lose, if he had any idea.

The guide had a troublesome demeanor, but he simply answered, “…come with me,” and led us to the street where the inns were located.

As Tauro and the others were trying to decide which inn to stay at based on the atmosphere of the store and the price tag, the guide said something,

“……, this is the place to stay.”

 And he named one inn.

“…… here?”

The nominated inn had an atmosphere that could not necessarily be called respectable.

The set rate was normal, but the Inn didn’t seem worth it.

“No, this place is a bit ……”

When Tauro tried to refuse, the guide now took a stronger tone,

“Stay here.”

 I replied, and continued,

“──Hey, boss. I brought six outside guests. …you understand what I mean.”

And he holds out his hand to the innkeeper.

The innkeeper nods, pulls out a bag of money from his pocket, and pays the guide a few silver coins.

Apparently, he is paid for the referral.

“You chose to come here because you get a …… referral fee?”

Malak sounded calm, but I could sense that he was uncomfortable.

“Once you get a room  ……, stay with me tomorrow for the whole day instead of going out separate ways. I’ll be in trouble otherwise.”

The man who was guiding us declared as he took a seat in the lobby of the inn.

“…… can’t we move freely here?”

Tauro confirms, just to be sure.

“We don’t want you to get …… lost. The rule here is to hold out for a day to get a rough idea of the roads of the capital.”

The guide also explains in a tedious manner.

“…… I understand.”

Tauro nodded and then nodded to everyone to confirm.

“we really wouldn’t want to be bothered by missing a child.”*

Ankh sarcastically chimed in, but there was no response from the guide.

He seems to be used to it.

The guide then entered the dining room, ordered some food, and began drinking the alcoholic beverages that were served first.

“…you all drink quietly today. This is also a rule, you pay for everything the guide eats and drinks.”

It was a very brazen rule, but the guide continued to drink as if it was a given.

Tauro and his team had a very unpleasant time at the inn, but the next day, they decided to go out early in the morning to let the guide do his job.

“I’m going to stay here and take it easy…”

“Well, we’re off to see the sights, so please make yourselves at home.”

Tauro interrupts and tries to go outside with the others.

“… Tsk!”

The guide clicked his tongue and chased after Tauro and his group.

“Is that the lord’s mansion?”

“What is that tower for?”

“What about that big building?”

“Is that the Adventurers’ Guild?”

Tauro, like an outsider, asked about landmarks of the capital one after another.

He was no longer shy about asking for information from his guide.

“…You’re a pugnacious little brat.”

 The guide complains.

“wouldn’t it be a loss if we didn’t get back what you ate and drank at the inn?”

Tauro reopened the conversation and began to ask about the history of the city and its climate.

The guide was, of course, there to keep an eye on Tauro and his friends, who were outsiders, but since Tauro was so brazenly asking him everything, he didn’t look at him with suspicion.

If they were some kind of spies, they would have kept a low profile and stayed quiet so as not to be conspicuous, he thought

Also, it stands out that the leader of the group of adventurers is a child.

His companions, with the exception of one, were all beautiful men and women, completely out of place.

After monitoring Tauro and the others for a day, the guide reported to his superiors that although they were attracting attention, there was no problem at all.
