Chapter 304: To the Marquis’s Residence

By the time Tauro finished speaking with Prince Fleue, the sun had set. Throughout the Royal Capital, streetlights fitted with magical lanterns of Tauro’s design illuminated the roads.

When he left the palace, a messenger from Marquis Van Dyne was waiting in a carriage.

“Lord Tauro, I have an urgent report.”

“Urgent? What happened?”

“The Kingdom Knights report that Viscount Saissi has taken refuge in Marquis Halagoura’s residence. A dispute has arisen over whether he’ll be surrendered.”

“He escaped even though the knights moved immediately?”

“There may be an informant within the Kingdom Knights—either someone loyal to Saissi or a supporter of Marquis Halagoura’s faction. By the time the knights reached Saissi’s residence, he had already gone to the marquis’s estate.”

“That’s remarkably fast. Is it possible he happened to be visiting Marquis Halagoura before the arrest order was issued?”

“No one appears to have considered that possibility.”

“Whatever the circumstances, Marquis Halagoura is now sheltering him.”

“Yes. Powerful though the marquis may be, he can’t openly conceal a wanted criminal forever.”

“I understand. Please take me to Marquis Halagoura’s residence.”

“What? I can change our destination, but there’s little you can do once we arrive. It would be safer to leave the matter to the Kingdom Knights.”

“I intend to leave the arrest to them. I only want to gather information while the opportunity still exists.”

The messenger reluctantly redirected the carriage.

When they arrived near the Halagoura estate, the messenger looked at Tauro uneasily.

“We’ve arrived, Lord Tauro. What exactly are you planning?”

“I intend to enter the estate and learn what is happening inside.”

“What? This is Marquis Halagoura’s residence. Its security will be among the strongest in the kingdom. Unless you can completely suppress your presence and disappear into the darkness—through an exceptional skill or an intricate combination of spells resembling legendary invisibility magic—entering unnoticed is impossible.”

The warning merely gave Tauro an idea.

“Then I’ll combine light, darkness, and water magic through [Multiple Chanting], and use [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme) to conceal my body.”

His figure vanished inside the carriage.

“What?”

The messenger stared at the empty seat in shock.

Tauro had created an improvised invisibility spell. Darkness magic erased the recognizable outline of his body, water particles bent the surrounding light, and light magic adjusted the resulting image to blend with his surroundings like optical camouflage.

The inspiration came from animation he remembered from his previous life.

“If I also use [Presence Concealment], entering the estate should be possible.”

A voice emerged from apparently empty space, startling the messenger again.

Judging by that reaction, Tauro’s experiment had succeeded.

“I’ll return when I’ve learned what I can.”

He opened the carriage door and stepped out. The slight shift in the carriage’s weight was the only visible proof that he had left.

“What an extraordinary person… He created something resembling legendary magic as though it were an ordinary experiment.”

Once the carriage had moved away, Tauro climbed over the estate’s high outer wall.

The grounds were enormous, and the main residence stood some distance from the wall. Tauro chose a stone-paved route so that his footsteps would leave no trace and approached cautiously.

 Numerous guards patrolled the estate.

Many carriages were gathered near the entrance as well. A large number of nobles had apparently come to Marquis Halagoura’s residence that evening.

Using his invisibility spell and [Presence Concealment], Tauro slipped behind a noble who had just left a carriage and entered with the man’s party.

“Count Ayanshi, everyone is waiting for you in the reception room.”

A male servant of House Halagoura addressed the noble Tauro had followed.

“Alexa. How is the marquis? I heard Saissi fled here without considering the consequences.”

“The marquis and Viscount Saissi are discussing the matter in the study. I believe he’ll speak with everyone in the reception room afterward.”

“I see.”

Another servant guided Count Ayanshi away.

Tauro separated from the count and headed toward the study. As he moved, Alexa suddenly stared directly at the space he occupied.

Tauro froze and held his breath.

“Was it my imagination? No…”

Alexa muttered under his breath, then hurried away.

That man is remarkably perceptive. And the name Alexa sounds familiar…

Tauro set the thought aside and focused on finding the study. Still tense, he climbed toward the second floor.
