Chapter 190: All-Out Battle

Chloe stared at Tauro in surprise when he volunteered.

“Tauro, you can use magic?”

“I can imbue my attacks with magical power, so they should work against ogres. Aeris and I are also the remaining members of the same team, so we should fight together.”

“Understood. Then the three C-rank adventurers Bob, Twin, and Belin will form a mixed unit with Black-Gold Wings, the D-plus team Dawn, and the E-plus team Akebono. That gives you nine people.”

Chloe continued reorganizing the available adventurers until she had created six mixed units.

Two five-person groups were centered on experienced C-rank fighters. The remaining units relied on numbers rather than individual strength, with nine or more members apiece. One formation contained three D-rank adventurers and twelve E-rank adventurers, for a total of fifteen.

Chloe’s strategy placed the C-plus team Wolf Fang at the center of the main force.

Bob’s mobile group, which included the other C-rank fighters and Black-Gold Wings, would operate as a flanking unit. The remaining mixed teams would stay close to Wolf Fang and overwhelm isolated ogres through coordinated numbers.

Without such a plan, lower-ranked adventurers who relied only on physical attacks would have almost no chance of defeating the heavily armored monsters.

This was no longer an ordinary subjugation quest. It was a battle to protect an entire village, and the Dansas branch was committing nearly every fighter it possessed.

The adventurers hurriedly confirmed one another’s abilities, completed their preparations, and set out for the neighboring village.

Bob led the fastest members ahead of the main body.

He was a dogfolk man with long brown hair and yellow eyes, and he was currently one of the most successful adventurers at the Dansas branch.

Two other C-rank adventurers accompanied him at the front: Twin, a red-haired, red-eyed dual-sword user known for his speed, and Belin, a blue-haired, blue-eyed spearman whose mobility was equally impressive.

Tauro and Aeris followed close behind them.

They reached the village just as the residents were fleeing.

“The monsters are attacking right now! Please kill them!” one villager shouted without stopping.

Four ogres pursued the escaping villagers.

Twin and Belin rushed forward first.

Aeris immediately cast a powerful lightning spell into the center of the group—a ranged attack strong enough to kill even a durable orc.

Thunder crashed down over the four ogres.

“Gugaaah!”

The monsters staggered and stopped moving, but none of them fell.

“Magic is supposed to be their weakness, and even that didn’t kill them in one strike!” Aeris exclaimed.

Twin and Belin attacked one of the stunned ogres together.

“I struck hard enough to take its head, but its body is far too tough!” Twin shouted.

“I aimed directly for its heart!” Belin added.

Their combined attack finally killed the first ogre, and both men immediately leaped back to avoid the remaining three.

Bob moved without hesitation. His magic sword flashed twice, cutting deeply through the necks of two slowed ogres and killing them.

The final ogre roared and raised its weapon toward Bob.

A streak of light passed beside Bob’s face and disappeared into the monster’s open mouth.

Tauro’s light arrow pierced through the ogre’s head and continued into the right shoulder of another ogre that had just arrived behind it.

At the same time, Aeris cast support magic on Twin and Belin to increase their offensive power. Their first exchange had shown that even experienced C-rank fighters needed additional strength to break through an ogre’s defenses.

The rest of the adventurers soon caught up.

Seeing that Bob’s advance group had already killed four ogres, the lower-ranked fighters gained confidence and charged the approaching horde.

Tauro handed Aeris a magic-restoration potion.

“I’ll cover you,” he told Bob.

Bob grinned.

“I’m counting on it.”

He immediately rushed toward the next ogre.

The adventurers’ initial enthusiasm didn’t last long. E-rank fighters were knocked aside with frightening ease.

Ogres weren’t merely large and durable. They wore proper armor, wielded heavy weapons, and fought with instinctive, battle-hardened technique.

The difference in strength was unmistakable.

“Don’t attack alone!” the leader of Wolf Fang shouted. “The C-rank fighters will deliver the finishing blows!”

The mages shifted their focus from trying to kill the ogres outright to weakening, slowing, and disrupting them.

Even with that support, the front-line fighters were under enormous pressure.

Every swing of an ogre’s weapon was both fast and crushingly heavy. The adventurers had no chance to relax, and their stamina rapidly drained away.

“Next group, take over!”

The mixed teams maintained their formations and rotated fresh front-line fighters into place whenever the current group began to falter.

For the moment, the all-out battle between the adventurers and the ogre horde remained evenly matched.
