Chapter 385: Barrier Magic

I take the three people who were scolded by Nero and me and head towards lunch. On the way, I asked a passing servant to deliver the wild rabbit fur and mask to the workshop.

When we arrived at the dining room, my mother was already waiting there.

“Julius, it seems you were making magical potions this morning. How did it go?”

“I ended up creating something that should never be released to the world, so I’ve sealed it up tightly.”

We both laughed. From past experience, I realized that keeping secrets usually leads to trouble, so I decided to share anything that seemed safe to release.

My mother, always smiling, heard this and seemed curious about what kind of magical potion it was. I made Rosalia promise not to tell anyone and explained what I had created.

“That’s amazing! With such a powerful potion, you could defeat any monster!”

“Well, it might prevent death, but whether it would guarantee victory is another matter.”

“You’ve created something difficult to handle again, haven’t you? Was that from the book you got from Mother-in-law?”

My mother sighed, but since I spoke first, her anger didn’t rise too much. It seems this approach is a good one. I’ll make sure to speak up right away next time.

“No, that wasn’t in Grandmother’s book. There’s no mention of something like ‘Holy Dragon Fur.’ I think I was the first to get it.”

“Kyuu!”

Mira, who was sitting on Fabienne’s lap, stretched her body and raised her hand. It seems Mira really likes sitting on Fabienne’s lap. I wonder if it’s that comfortable. I’m quite curious. Maybe I’ll ask for a lap pillow next time? But the challenge will be how to get to that situation. I should consult Nero later.

“…So, how exactly did you make the magical potion you mentioned earlier?”

Fabienne and I exchanged glances, then tilted our heads before explaining how we made it. Upon hearing this, my mother became furious.

“What were you thinking? What would have happened if something went wrong? A simple ‘sorry’ won’t be enough!”

“Well… when suspicious smoke started coming out, I immediately used wind magic to blow it out the window, and I also used barrier magic just in case it exploded, so everything should be fine.”

I hurriedly made an excuse. Because if my mother says, “Developing new magical potions is forbidden,” then I would only be able to create existing potions until I move to the Amber Baron family. That’s something I want to avoid at all costs.

Huh? The air seems a bit tense. Did I say something wrong again?

“When did you use barrier magic? I didn’t notice at all.”

“To my shame, I didn’t notice either.”

“Oniisan, what is barrier magic?”

“Julius, can you use barrier magic?”

All four of them spoke at once. I’m no Prince Shotoku, so I can only listen to one person at a time. Priority goes to my mother. From this question, it seems that barrier magic is a type of magic that isn’t commonly used.

Hmm, that’s strange. I’m sure I read about it in the magical encyclopedia.

Right, my main purpose was to investigate what kinds of magic exist, so I just skimmed through the explanation!

However, if I say I can’t use it here, the potion development might come to a halt. I have to resolve myself to this. There’s no turning back now.

“I can use barrier magic. Would you like me to demonstrate? It’s not a dangerous magic, and it seems Rosalia wants to know as well.”

“Well then, let’s have you demonstrate.”

“Alright then… Wind Shield.”

At the spot I pointed to, a green-colored wall-like object appeared, with the other side faintly visible through it. Upon seeing this, my mother’s eyes widened, Fabienne and Nero both tilted their heads in unison, while Rosalia, Mira, and Lilie’s eyes sparkled.

“That’s amazing, Oniisan! A green wall! What’s happening? Is it safe to touch?”

“Kyuu?”

“Maybe it’s better not to touch it.”

Since I can distinguish between allies and enemies, it wouldn’t be a problem to touch it, but it’s lunchtime now. Walking around during a meal would be rude, so I decided not to let them touch it. Rosalia and Mira looked disappointed. They must have intended to touch it. That was close.

“Julius-sama, there wasn’t any green wall like that in the alchemy room, though?”

“Ah, that’s because I made the color disappear to avoid it interfering with potion-making. Like this.”

As I said that, I waved my hand, and the green wall disappeared as if the mist was dispersing. Everyone present was shocked. It seemed they hadn’t expected the color to disappear. After all, a green wall right in front of you would be quite bothersome.

“Just as expected of Julius-sama.”

Fabienne looked at me with an entranced expression. Well, how should I put it, when a beautiful girl makes that face, it’s incredibly powerful. Unable to bear her gaze, I looked over at Nero, and he had the same expression on his face.

This is also pretty bad, in a different way!

“Truly, Julius… Barrier magic is supposed to be usable only by mages loved by spirits, but now that I think about it, you have the blessing of the spirits. I can understand now why you can use barrier magic.”

For some reason, my mother seemed to come to her own conclusion. Lucky me. Who knew the blessing of the spirits would be useful in this way? Thanks. Well, to be honest, I could use barrier magic even without the blessing of the spirits, but I’ll leave that unsaid.
