Chapter 344: Instinct Unleashed
The tea gathering remained peaceful, but I had to raise a serious matter. Pretending not to understand House Ambert's feelings would be wrong.
“Father-in-law, I have a request.”
“Is it about Fabienne?”
“Yes. We originally agreed that Lady Fabienne would stay with House Heine only until the thaw. I would like her to continue studying and helping us after spring begins.”
“Father, I ask the same,” Lady Fabienne said. “I wish to continue learning from Lord Julius and assisting him.”
Baron Ambert stroked his chin while Baroness Ambert watched us thoughtfully.
Father had probably already written to them about the proposal, but their agreement could not be taken for granted.
“Fabienne is our only child,” Baron Ambert said quietly. “The house becomes very lonely without her.”
His words struck me at once.
House Ambert was a baronial family beneath House Heine's authority. Even an innocent request from us could feel like an order they were unable to refuse.
Sister-in-law Daniela would return to the royal capital despite everyone's sadness. It was only fair that Lady Fabienne should also be able to return to her parents.
“Then I shall escort Lady Fabienne between our estates every day. Would that resolve the problem?”
“What?”
Baron and Baroness Ambert stared at me. Lady Fabienne was equally surprised.
“Lord Julius, can you ride safely?”
“Yes. I trained with House Heine's territorial knights, and I possess the Riding skill.”
Her concern was understandable. She had never seen me on horseback, and two children riding together could be dangerous without sufficient skill.
“Would that not be too much trouble?” Baroness Ambert asked.
“No. I cannot allow my wishes to make both of you unhappy.”
Neither parent denied that the separation had been painful.
I should have considered their feelings earlier.
“I shall discuss the arrangement with Father. Please do not worry; I will make certain that House Heine does not pressure you.”
“Thank you.”
Baron and Baroness Ambert bowed deeply. Lady Fabienne appeared too moved to speak.
The day would eventually come when she could choose where to establish her own household. Until then, there was no reason to separate her needlessly from her parents.
For that day, Lady Fabienne returned to the House Heine estate with us because her belongings were still there.
During the carriage ride, she looked guilty.
“Lord Julius, I am sorry…”
“Fabienne.”
I stopped her before she could continue. She had done nothing wrong.
“Your parents' feelings are entirely natural. The mistake was mine for making plans without considering them carefully.”
I gently touched her cheek, and she leaned against me. I placed an arm around her shoulders until she calmed down.
We were not being permanently separated. There was no need for either of us to treat the change as a tragedy.
Upon returning to the House Heine estate, I immediately explained the situation to Father and Mother. Rosalia and Mira were present as well.
My parents looked concerned but neither objected.
“I understand,” Father said. “I shall write to Baron Ambert and confirm the daily arrangement.”
“Thank you.”
“Lady Fabienne is their only child. Their request is reasonable.”
“Sister-in-law Fabienne, are you leaving?” Rosalia asked.
“Kyuu?”
Rosalia and Mira had sensed the tension.
“I am not going away,” Lady Fabienne reassured them. “I shall simply travel here from my own home each day.”
“I see.”
“Kyuu.”
Both immediately relaxed.
“How do you intend to collect her every morning?” Father asked.
“I shall ride to House Ambert. We have several excellent horses.”
“Carrying a second rider may be difficult at your age. Would it not be safer to send an adult escort?”
“I am confident in my Riding skill.”
I had already promised to escort Lady Fabienne myself. Handing the task to someone else would make my declaration meaningless.
“Kyuu! Kyuu!”
Mira stepped in front of me and stared insistently.
At first, I did not understand. Then the meaning became obvious.
“Are you offering to carry us? I appreciate it, Mira, but you are still too small.”
The room became silent. Apparently, no one else had even considered riding a holy dragon.
“Brother, can Mira carry people?”

Mira landed on the floor with a determined thump.
They lowered their body and concentrated. An instant later, they began to grow.
Before anyone could react, Mira had become large enough to carry two children comfortably.
