Chapter 183: Let Us Meet My Future Sister-in-Law
“Well, I'm really glad Julius was here.”
“What's with that tone? That makes it sound like I wasn't needed until today.”
“That's not what I meant.”
Hmm. Brother Alex seemed to have completely classified me as a problem child. Maybe he thought of me as some kind of bomb that might explode in an unpredictable way.
I didn't like causing trouble either, but fate simply refused to let me go.
Just kidding.
Brother Cain finally seemed to regain his composure. Looking embarrassed, he moved away from me while the servants tried to do something about his tear-streaked face.
My clothes were even worse.
The servants took one look and apparently gave up. Nobody said a word.
I'd better change.
I went back to my room before the damage spread any further.
“I'm sorry, Julius. I really am.”
“Please lift your head, Brother Cain. I honestly don't mind.”
It was dinner time. It had been a while since all three of us had eaten together, and Brother Cain kept apologising profusely.
I really didn't mind. If our positions had been reversed, I probably would have done exactly the same thing.
Brother Cain was growing into a very straightforward, honest young man.
Whether that was entirely suitable for a nobleman was another question, though.
“Will she recover immediately if she drinks the magic potion you made, Julius?”
“Probably. At least, Lelie recovered almost immediately when I used it at the orphanage today. But Lady Meeka could be suffering from something different.”
I deliberately made myself look troubled.
Wasn't this the perfect chance to meet Lady Meeka Raniemi, the girl Brother Cain had feelings for?
I glanced at Brother Alex.
The corner of his mouth rose by the tiniest amount.
Such a faint movement. If I hadn't been me, I would have missed it.
“I see. Julius has a point,” Alex said. “Cain, we're worried too, so the two of us will go with you.”
“Yes! That's—”
Brother Cain looked uncomfortable, but he couldn't turn back now. He frowned as he thought it over.
Maybe I'd pushed him a little too hard.
Still, I wanted to know what sort of young lady she was. Especially if she might become my sister-in-law in the future. I wanted to build a good relationship with her now.
“I understand. Thank you.”
“Then go to the academy as usual tomorrow, Cain. In the meantime, Julius and I will go to the orphanage and collect the magic potion. We'll meet you at lunchtime.”
“Yes.”
Brother Alex also seemed interested in the orphanage I kept visiting. He was probably curious about my relationship with the children there.
I'd introduce him to Nero and Lelie.
Connections were important.
After that, Brother Alex gave several instructions to the servants. He was probably arranging our visit to the orphanage and notifying the academy that we would be coming.
He really was firmly establishing himself as the next head of House Heine. Watching him handle everything so smoothly was reassuring.
I also had to inform the Royal Magic Pharmacists' Corps and Royal Knight Order that I wouldn't be visiting the castle tomorrow, so I called over the servants and gave them instructions too.
Lung disease might be starting to spread. I also asked the Royal Magic Pharmacists' Corps to secure more poison-moth scale powder.
What was this feeling?
It almost seemed as though I'd become the person directing the Royal Magic Pharmacists' Corps.
That had to be my imagination. Right?
The next morning, Brother Cain left for the academy with a worried expression. He probably didn't suspect our ulterior motive, but he clearly wasn't at ease.
That meant we needed to get Lady Meeka back on her feet as quickly as possible.
Brother Alex and I got ready and headed to the orphanage as well.
Now that his final examinations were over, he apparently didn't have to attend the academy again until the graduation ceremony. Even so, he still seemed busy every day with social gatherings and visits to Princess Daniela.
“You're a rather devious person too, Julius,” Brother Alex said in the carriage. “You suggested examining Lady Meeka because you wanted to see what kind of person Cain had chosen, didn't you?”
I couldn't exactly deny it.
“What a terrible accusation. You immediately joined in yourself, Brother.”
“Well, that's true. I'm curious about what kind of girl Cain chose too.”
He looked strangely pleased.
Did he think he'd found himself a fellow schemer?
I was innocent. I had no malicious intentions.
Probably.
“There is a child at the orphanage you're interested in, isn't there?”
“What?”
“Otherwise, you wouldn't be going this far, would you? Is it a girl?”
Brother Alex grinned. Apparently, after reading reports about me bringing gifts to the orphanage, he'd worked out quite a lot.
His conclusion was slightly off, but he really was perceptive.
“There is someone I'd like to recruit as my personal attendant. He isn't a girl.”
“Oh?”
He sounded entertained.
At least it didn't look as though he would reject the idea outright. The rest would depend on my sales pitch.
Today would only be an introduction.
Before I returned to the territorial capital, I intended to bring Nero into my household—and Lelie with him.
“Lord Alex, Lord Julius, we've been waiting for you. The magic potion is ready, as you can see.”
“Thank you, Nero. You've helped us a great deal.”
As expected of Nero. Everything was prepared perfectly. We could head for the academy without delay.
“You must be Nero,” Brother Alex said. “I've heard that you and Julius are getting along well. Thank you for helping him.”
“No, my lord. There's no need to thank us. We're the ones indebted to Lord Julius.”
Brother Alex clearly knew about Nero from the servants' reports. He had probably heard all sorts of details.
The other children quietly watched us. Several of their cheeks turned red when they looked at my brother's face.
He really was a handsome adult, wasn't he?
“I'll thank you properly another time,” Alex said. “I'm sorry, but we have urgent business today.”
“And I'll come visit again with sweets.”
“We'll be waiting!”
We left the orphanage to the sound of the children's voices.
If we left now, we should reach the Royal Academy before lunchtime.
It felt a little early to me, though.
“There seems to be a cold outbreak at the academy,” Brother Alex explained. “I thought I'd ask my juniors how well they understand the situation.”
“Are we going to the student council room?”
“Yes. I want to see how well the current student council understands what's happening at the academy.”
The new student council was being tested by the former president.
Being a student council member really didn't look easy.
I would definitely refuse.
If I ever attended the Royal Academy, though, people might try to force me into the student council. I needed to start planning my escape now.
