Chapter 4: A Small Fraying (2)
The room was unnaturally quiet for a place where a married couple’s abrupt separation—one never discussed beforehand—had just been declared.
Without speaking, Flora signed the divorce papers.
Elliot silently accepted them and left the room without a single word to her.
Even the knights accompanying him appeared bewildered, but they filed out as though fleeing the awkward silence that ruled the room.
—You married her, and you can’t even say one final word? Have you lost your mind?
Kevin’s mouth fell open in shock and anger, but the oppressive atmosphere robbed him of his voice.
The only fortunate part was that the same silence kept Emily from saying anything unnecessary before she left with the others.
Kevin had been waiting in the hallway at the rear of the group, watching through the doorway. Before he recovered from his astonishment, everyone had left, and the door of the humble tenement was slowly closing.
Apart from Elliot, Kevin was the only person there who knew Flora. Yet, uneducated as he was, he couldn’t find the right words for a moment like this.
Unable to move, he caught one last glimpse of Flora through the closing doorway. Her expression, as though she had given up on everything, burned itself into his memory.
—The two of them were never this cold to each other, at least not as I remember them…
He looked back at the closed door and thought of Flora beyond it—and of the man Elliot had once been.
Then he turned away, his shoulders drooping, and followed the group.
Kevin could protest or even attack Elliot in his anger, but as a low-ranking knight, he would only be dismissed from the Order. He would accomplish nothing and, at worst, drag the people he cherished into the consequences.
He sighed heavily in helpless frustration.
Horses would have attracted too much attention in the city, so the knights traveled by carriage. With Elliot at their head, they divided among several carriages and set out for the Order’s station at the royal castle.
Kevin lay sulking in the last carriage, pretending to sleep, until a sudden stop jolted him upright.
“What’s going on?”
Through the small window, he saw a crowd gathered at the far end of an alley. Thick black smoke billowed from a building beyond them.
“It appears there’s been a fire. I sent the deputy commanders ahead to avoid causing a greater disturbance, but some of us should go and help.”
One of the knights who had gone ahead to investigate had just returned.
Kevin and the few knights who remained hurried to the scene. The fire had already been extinguished, and the injured were being carried out.
When the crowd noticed them, a great cheer went up.
“It’s the Saint! The Saint has come!”
Even Kevin and the other knights turned in surprise. Saint Emily was approaching with light steps.
They had left only unknown knights behind precisely to avoid causing a commotion, and now that effort was ruined. Kevin frowned.
Through the Goddess’s blessing, many clergy and monks could use healing and restorative magic in addition to purification.
It was perfectly reasonable for Saint Emily to rush to treat the injured. Even if her fame created a disturbance, human life came first.
However—
“I-I’m sorry. Healing magic isn’t one of my strengths…”
As she held her hands over an injured person, Emily had been repeating variations of that excuse for some time.
No one blamed the Saint after she had gone out of her way to come. Everyone knew Emily had earned the title through her powerful purification magic, and there was no reason to fault her for being less capable at healing and restoration.
Even so, most people would assume that she kept apologizing for the slow effect of her healing because her compassionate heart ached for the injured.
—I knew I wasn’t imagining it. It’s grown weaker again… Are you sure you don’t need to hide that, Lady Saint?
Devotion was certainly one of Emily’s virtues, and Kevin didn’t deny it. Yet he doubted that she deserved to be called a saint.
—Wasn’t her reputation exaggerated from the start?
