Chapter 98

Buzz, after trapping Ares and Gansas within the Earth Wall, drags the members of “Lightningbolt” to one spot.

“Huff… huff… Damn it! Why am I doing this for these fools?”

The sound of banging against the inside of the Earth Wall echoed loudly, making Buzz even more anxious.

Buzz’s earlier rage had been partly an act… though he was genuinely quite angry. He was trying to think of a way to escape with the members of “Lightningbolt.” He wasn’t doing it out of camaraderie, of course.

Abandoning them and running was risky. But trying to finish off all the fallen “Lightningbolt” members was no better; if even one survived, the result would be the same.

He didn’t want to risk being purged by the Goddess’ cult or angering that person.

(I just need a little time… somehow.)

With that thought, Buzz came up with a plan.

If Ares and his group were soft enough to allow the “Lightningbolt” members to heal, that would make things easier. And if not, then by acting in rage and casting a spell, he could at least make them think it was an attack spell.

Buzz finally gathered the “Lightningbolt” members and, breathing heavily, pulled out a teleportation stone from his pocket.

“This humiliation… I won’t forget it. I’ll capture that teleporter brat and that damn hero kid and tear them apart, alive!”

He shouted as he activated the teleportation stone. As the area was enveloped in a bright light, part of the Earth Wall began to crumble.

“Tch… He had a teleportation stone?”

Ares and Gansas, who had finally managed to break through the Earth Wall, saw Buzz using the teleportation stone to escape, leaving behind the fallen members of “Lightningbolt.”

The Earth Wall hadn’t been spacious enough for Gansas to swing his battle axe, so he had to use his hand axe, which had delayed their escape.

(I took too long to break through that wall, even if it could have hit the newbie… That guy would’ve handled it better…)

Ganzas scratched his head irritably and sighed.

“Uh… um…”

Seeing this, Ares apologetically spoke up.

“What?”

“I- I’m sorry… for…”

Ares had been feeling guilty for holding Gansas back.

“No need to apologize. I underestimated him too. It’s a reminder not to let your guard down…”

Gansas sighed as he spoke.

“Now, as I said earlier, you owe me an explanation. I stuck my neck into this, so it’s not just a ‘goodbye’ without knowing anything.”

“…Understood.”

Ares then explained to Gansas why he was fighting Buzz and his group, though he left out details about being a hero and why Nina was targeted.

He felt uncomfortable hiding things from Gansas, who had helped him, but revealing too much might drag Gray and the others into trouble.

“I see. So, the guy using magic was targeting a family close to your benefactor.”

“Yes… but I don’t know why…”

Gansas noticed that Ares was holding something back, but adventurers generally didn’t pry too much into each other’s affairs.

If it were just an adventurer quarrel, Gansas normally wouldn’t have intervened…

(It definitely didn’t seem like something trivial…)

“Well, whatever. I’m leaving. You’d better hurry back too, because I won’t be there to save you next time.”

With that, Gansas turned his back and began to walk away.

“Um, thank you… very much!”

“Yeah… oh, right.”

Gansas had been brushing off Ares’s thanks and was about to leave when he suddenly stopped, as if he’d remembered something.

“Hey.”

“Yes?”

“What happened today… make sure you don’t go telling that guy Gray that I helped you.”

“Huh?”

Ares froze, momentarily confused by what Gansas was saying.

“Got it?”

“But…”

“Got it!?”

“Y-yes!”

“Good.”

After making Ares agree by force, Gansas quickly left.

Ares watched him go, then bowed his head in gratitude.

(…I should head back too.)

As he returned to Gray’s house, Ares decided to discuss the situation with the innkeeper first.
