Chapter 65: Contact Lenses
Today is the day Velvet and Donny return to the royal capital.
Ever since losing to Sheila and Lime, Donny had been constantly receiving cold stares from Velvet. However, he didn’t let that get to him and helped out until the very last day.
Thanks to that, we were able to grow more crops than ever before.
Since today is their final day here, I plan to treat them to some Japanese cuisine.
For Donny, this will be his first time trying Japanese food. Sheila and I are both curious to see how this usually rough-mannered man will react.
As usual, we skip our lunch break and put in extra effort to finish our work early.
The sudden increase in efficiency on just this last day seems to have caught Donnie off guard, but he’ll get used to it soon enough.

“Great job, everyone. We managed to finish before noon again.”
“Sato-san! Today, we’ll finally get to try Japanese cuisine, right?”
Sheila asks me with sparkling eyes.

“Of course! Since today is your and Donny’s last day, I’ll prepare a Japanese meal for you both.”
“I’m so excited! Thank you, Sato-san!”

“Sheila and my lady seem more excited than ever. Is otherworldly food really that good?”

“Well, Donny has the taste buds of a fool. He finds everything delicious, so his opinion doesn’t count.”
“I did grow up in extreme poverty, so yes, I do appreciate most food… But my lady, calling me a fool is harsh.”
If he’s been satisfied with this world’s food, then he’ll probably enjoy Japanese cuisine too.
The only thing I worry about is how much he’ll eat.
He’s a big guy with a big appetite, but unfortunately, I can’t prepare that much food.
“Alright, I’ll get started on the cooking now—actually, before that, may I do something first?”

“I’d like to give Donnie a present. And I want him to try it out right away.”
With that, I open my tablet and order a set of contact lenses.
I had previously asked Donnie about his eyesight and learned that he has astigmatism. These should work perfectly.
“A present for me? What is it?”
“They’re called contact lenses. They’re like glasses, but you wear them inside your eyes.”
“W-Wear them inside my eyes!? That’s impossible!”
“It’s quite simple, really. Let me show you. First, you check the guide marks to see which side is up. Then, lift your upper eyelid… and there! It’s in.”
“Doesn’t that hurt?”
“Not at all. Here, why don’t you try it?”
Despite his usual bravado, Donny looks absolutely terrified.
Even people who are used to contact lenses sometimes hesitate to put them in, so I can understand why he’d be scared.
If he’s never seen anything like them before, it’s only natural for him to be cautious.
“Donny, Sato went through the trouble of getting you a gift. Just try it out.”
“…Ugh. If my lady insists, then fine. But if I go blind, you have to take responsibility!”
“These are meant to improve your vision, not take it away, so you have nothing to worry about.”
“That’s easy for you to say!”
Donny lets out a frustrated yell but takes a deep breath to calm himself.
After seemingly making up his mind, he picks up the contact lens.
“Hold your upper eyelid… Ah, it’s easier if you keep both eyes open. That’s right. Now, place it on your pupil. After that, just blink a few times to let it settle in.”
He was scared at first, but as expected of a former adventurer, he follows my instructions perfectly and manages to insert it on the first try.

“Okay, now slowly open your eye.”
Following my words, Donnie opens his eye.
I wait in anticipation, wondering how he’ll react.
But instead of saying anything, he just stands there frozen, mouth hanging open.
“…Donny? How is it?”
“……………………This is incredible. Absolutely incredible! My right eye can see everything so clearly!”

Excited beyond measure, Donny starts bouncing up and down like a child.
For a moment, I thought he wasn’t impressed, but it turns out he’s just overwhelmed with joy.
“Make sure to remove them before you sleep. Also, these are disposable, so throw them away after use.”
“These are disposable…?”
“Yes. There are 30 days’ worth in this pack. If you need more, come work for me again. Next time, I’ll give you a month’s supply in exchange for 12 days of labor.”

Donnie’s eyes gleam with excitement as he quickly inserts the second contact lens and gets ready for battle.
Considering how strong he was with impaired vision, I can’t wait to see how he fights now that he can see clearly.
Before our meal, we’ll have one more sparring match to see just how much he’s improved.
