Chapter 5: The Quality of Ingredients
The next day.
Thanks to the villa belonging to the king, the futon was of high quality, and I was able to sleep soundly for the first time in ages.
Having spent a long time in the hospital, and even after quitting work often waking up in a panic, being able to sleep deeply in such an unusual place as another world was a strange yet welcome experience.
As I headed to the living room, still thinking about all this, I found that Sheila was already awake and had even prepared breakfast.
It was a simple meal of ham and eggs with bread resembling a baguette, but just the fact that a woman had cooked it for me made me ridiculously happy.
“Sheila-san, you made breakfast for us?”
“Yes. Since I’m using the sleeping arrangements here, I thought I’d take care of the household chores.”
“Thank you. …But you really don’t have to do so much. Let’s take turns making meals each day.”
“If that’s what you’d like, Sato-san… but are you sure?”
“Absolutely. As long as you don’t mind trying my take on cooking in this world.”
“Oh, so your cooking is unique, Sato-san! Hehe, I love food, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Sheila smiled as she said this.
She’s usually expressionless, though she seemed happy when we discussed the bodyguard situation. This was the first time I’d seen her smile since then, aside from when I told her my hilariously weak stats.
While I wasn’t a professional chef, I used to cook for myself, so I hoped she wouldn’t expect too much. Still, her smile motivated me to put in extra effort for tomorrow’s meal.
“I’m not familiar with the food in this world, so my dishes might not be very different. But I’ll give it my best. May I start eating?”
“Of course. Please enjoy.”
After saying a brief thanks for the food, I took a bite of the ham and eggs Sheila had prepared.
Delicious! Or at least, that’s what I wanted to say. But honestly, the eggs had a peculiar taste, and the ham had a distinct, unusual smell to it.
This wasn’t Sheila’s fault—it was simply the quality of the ingredients.
Given that the ingredients were brought from the royal palace, they were likely considered high-quality by this world’s standards. The difference in civilization level between this world and Japan was just that vast.
That said, the taste wasn’t far off from the bland hospital food I’d grown accustomed to, so it was definitely edible.
Not wanting to upset Sheila after she went to the trouble of cooking, I told her it was delicious while internally considering how I might improve the situation using my Otherworldly Farming skill.
After finishing breakfast, I now had a full day of free time ahead of me.
The fresh air made me want to climb the mountain behind the villa without a care in the world, but first, I needed to figure out exactly what Otherworldly Farming could do.
Although I’d seen its effects described through the crystal, the explanation had been complicated, and I needed to test it out for myself to fully understand it.
Sheila was watching me from a short distance, likely to ensure my safety, but there was no need to hide anything from her. I turned to face the grassland in front of the villa and activated the Otherworldly Farming skill.
The moment I mentally invoked the skill, a section of the grassland instantly transformed into farmland.
The surreal sight, fitting for another world, made my heart race. But what surprised me even more was the sudden appearance of a tablet-like device resembling an iPad.
In the top-right corner of the screen, the time was displayed. The top-left corner showed the letters “NP,” with my current NP total listed as 500.
The rest of the screen resembled an online shopping site like Amazon, displaying various products.
There were countless categories to choose from, including food, daily necessities, furniture, and clothing. As the crystal had indicated, I could also use NP to purchase monsters, learn skills, enhance abilities, and even acquire magic.
As for the prices, items from this world were relatively cheap, while items from my original world—Japan—were absurdly expensive.
For example, 10 eggs from this world cost 2 NP, while 10 eggs from Japan cost 60 NP.
I compared several products, and the prices for Japanese goods were consistently about 30 times higher.
If 1 NP was roughly equivalent to 100 yen, then a pack of eggs costing 6,000 yen was simply out of reach.
Still, after experiencing this world’s food quality at breakfast, I could already see myself wanting to splurge on Japanese goods someday.
To improve my quality of life, I’d need to work hard at farming.
Feeling motivated, I wanted to dive straight into planting some vegetable seeds. However, I decided to carefully browse the product catalog first.
Out of curiosity, I tapped on the “Monsters” category to check the prices of the creatures available for purchase.
