Chapter 20: A Visit
Three days passed in the blink of an eye after returning from the royal capital.
Life quickly returned to normal, and the fields were full of life with new crops growing abundantly.
At the moment, I’m growing a vegetable called “Brownturn.”
I considered planting Crackdraff again, but I decided to change things up and plant new seedlings to keep things fresh.
While considering the NP (Nutritional Points) I can earn, I want to figure out which crops would be the most profitable to grow.
Whether it’s creating a farm, a monster ranch, or even a lodging facility in this other world, I’m currently short on NP.
To confirm where I stand, my current NP balance is 4,538 NP.
At one point, I had over 6,000 NP, but the balance took a hit after buying Japanese ingredients and manga as a gift for the princess.
Though I had planned to spend it freely, I set three goals, and now I want to use the NP strategically to increase it.
For the past three days, I’ve been mulling over how to spend it, but I still haven’t reached a conclusion.
There are three main options:
- Purchase monsters to increase manpower.
- Improve the quality of the farmland to raise the value of each crop.
- Buy new vegetable seedlings in hopes of growing crops with better NP potential.
The safest bet is to increase manpower by purchasing monsters.
While I’ve expanded the farmland, I can’t manage it all on my own.
Plus, I want to create fields outside the Skill Field to grow vegetables for consumption and sale.
Considering this, buying monsters to help out would be ideal… but I have no idea which monsters would be suitable as workers.
I know of humanoid monsters like goblins, orcs, and ogres, but I have no guarantee they’d actually work.
When I think about it that way, buying monsters feels like a gamble.
The second option, improving the quality of the farmland, is an even bigger gamble. If improving the land doesn’t increase the NP value of the crops, it would be pointless.
It’s more likely that only the taste or size of the crops would improve.
The third option also carries uncertainty. There’s no guarantee the new vegetable seedlings available for purchase would yield high NP efficiency.
It’s possible they’d just add slower-growing vegetables with the same selling price.
As I was stuck in thought again today, unable to decide, Sheila—who had returned to the villa earlier—came running toward me.
It was the first time I’d seen Sheila looking so flustered, and it made me nervous even before hearing what she had to say.
“Sheila, what’s the matter? Why are you in such a rush?”
“W-Well… the princess is here! She’s asking to meet with you. Could you come right away?”
“What? The princess? Here at the villa?”
“Yes! She came alone and said she only wants to speak with you.”
I was stunned, as I hadn’t even considered the possibility of the princess visiting. Still, I was relieved it didn’t seem to be due to any immediate danger.
…Or could it be that I had unknowingly angered her?
The thought sent a chill down my spine, but I’d have to hear her out to know for sure.
After bowing to Sheila, who was waiting outside, I headed into the villa alone.
“…Sato, I’m sorry for calling you on such short notice.”
“Not at all! Thank you for taking the time to visit. So, what brings you here today?”
I should have engaged in a little small talk first, but curiosity got the better of me, and I couldn’t even think of a topic.
In response to my question, the princess shyly fidgeted before pulling out a luxurious-looking box. From it, she revealed… the manga I had given her as a gift.
“…The book you gave me—it was fascinating. Is there more to the story?”
With a voice so faint it seemed like it might disappear, she asked me that question.
…Ah, I see now. She snuck out here because she couldn’t wait to read the rest of the manga.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t have the next volume with me right now.”
“W-What?!”
The princess’s face instantly fell into despair, as if the world had ended.
Her reaction was so dramatic that I almost laughed, but I managed to hold it in and continued the conversation.
“I don’t have it with me, but the continuation does exist.”
“Really?! Then… where is it now?”
“It’s a bit difficult to explain, but I can obtain it using my skill.”
“T-Then, please sell me the next part!”
Her expression, which had been filled with despair just moments ago, suddenly blossomed into a radiant smile.
I had always thought of her as reserved and emotionless, but perhaps she’s someone who can’t help showing her feelings when it comes to things she loves.
