Chapter 124: Goblin Unit

Since I spent 60,000 NP on Helena, I now have about 25,000 NP left.

If I were aiming for a high-quality monster, I could probably afford just one, but if I go for cheaper ones, I could buy a lot.

What I’ve got my eye on are goblins—the monsters I debated buying at the very beginning.

Back then, I chose a slime for its appearance, but now I think forming a goblin unit might actually be a good idea.

With monsters of the same name, the second one usually costs more, but goblins and slimes both have many derivative variants—which is a big plus.

I did consider a slime unit, but slimes can’t do farm work, so I’ve made the goblin unit my first choice this time.

If I had one concern, it’s whether they’ll be freeloaders who don’t actually work.

At 500 NP each, that’s a definite possibility—but Lime cost the same and turned out reliable, so I’m more hopeful than worried.

Even if they end up being useless, 500 NP is cheap enough to take the risk.

With that in mind, I tapped the purchase button for a goblin.

A familiar flash of light appeared in the usual spot, and a goblin was summoned.

It stood about a meter tall, with green skin all over.

Thin, with a round belly and sharp eyes—it looked exactly like the stereotypical “goblin” from anime or manga.

“Hello, Goblin. Can you understand me?”

“…Ugaa?”

I tried speaking to the summoned goblin, but it tilted its head in confusion—it didn’t seem to understand me.

Like with my previous contract monsters, there didn’t seem to be any hostility, but we couldn’t communicate.

“So… it doesn’t understand speech. But since it doesn’t seem hostile, maybe I can figure something out depending on how I approach it.”

Thinking that maybe monsters could understand each other, I asked Helena and Mush to interpret—but neither of them could communicate with the goblin.

As I was racking my brain over what to do, Sheila, who had been watching, gave me some advice.

“If you summoned a higher-ranking type of goblin, maybe it could understand both of you?”

“…I see. That does make a lot of sense.”

If I appoint a goblin leader to issue commands, things might go smoothly.

I had already planned to build a goblin unit anyway, so buying a commander made sense.

So, I decided to spend 15,000 NP to purchase a Goblin Commander.

Among goblin-type monsters, it’s one of the more expensive ones—same price as a Goblin General. I debated which one to get…

But since I wanted it to work, the Commander seemed like the better fit.

If I were forming a battle unit, I would’ve gone with the General instead.

“Oh, there it is. Looks a bit bigger than a regular goblin, doesn’t it?”

“Just slightly, maybe. And it’s wearing what looks like a smart military-style uniform and cap.”

A goblin wearing a military cap and uniform appeared.

Aside from being slightly taller—about 120 cm—he looked almost identical to a regular goblin once you stripped the clothes off.

…Well, his eyes did seem a bit softer.

“Nice to meet you. Can you understand my words, Goblin Commander?”

“Uga!”

Unlike the first goblin who just looked confused, the Goblin Commander responded immediately.

He didn’t seem capable of speech, but it looked like we could communicate. That was a relief.

“Great. I’d like to ask you to act as an interpreter for the other goblins. Is that okay?”

“Uga-uga! Uga!”

He snapped into a salute, as if to say, Leave it to me!

Being the same species, he could apparently communicate with the regular goblin, too. Looks like I can really form that goblin unit.

“Thanks. I’ll give you names now. It’s going to be simple… You’ll be Shirei (Commander), and the regular goblin will be Villager.”

“Uga!”

“…Uga!”

Thanks to Shirei’s interpretation, Villager responded energetically too.

(By the way, the names come from ‘Commander’ and ‘Villager.’)

Since goblins often have names based on their jobs, I’ll probably stick with that naming convention going forward.

I might be able to remember more unique names thanks to my time being trained at a black company, but Sheila and the others probably wouldn’t, so I went with something easier.

That way, the name can be guessed from their outfit.

“Shirei and Villager, huh. Looking forward to working with you.”

“I think I can still add a few more contract monsters, so I’ll go ahead and increase the number of goblins. It’ll probably be hard to remember all the names, but I hope you’ll help.”

“You’re still adding more, huh? We’ll have to be careful not to mix them up.”

So, with my remaining 10,000 NP, I started buying more goblins one after another.

If everything works out, great—but since it all depends on how well Shirei manages them… I’ll try not to expect too much.
