Chapter 71: Preparing for an Away Quest
One morning, Tauro entered the guild as usual with Shin and Rumeya trailing behind him.
“There’s an unusual quest posted in the F-rank section.”
Shin pointed to a sheet on the bulletin board.
“You’re right. It’s a Killer Ant extermination quest prompted by a mass outbreak, open to adventurers from F through E rank. What do you think, Tauro?”
Rumeya looked to Tauro for a decision.
Killer Ants were enormous ants, fifty to sixty centimeters long, with jaws strong enough to devastate fields.
An adventurer in the F ranks could normally crush and kill one, but they also attacked people when gathered in groups, making a mass outbreak far more dangerous.
That was probably why the quest was open to both F- and E-rank adventurers.
The destination was a newly established village nearby.
Tauro recalled that Count Dallerer had granted the village to a knight in his service after having the forest cleared.
If even the knight responsible for the village couldn’t repel them, the outbreak had to be severe.
“I think I’ll take it.”
Tauro removed one of the posted slips.
“Then I’ll too.”
Shin followed suit.
“Me too.”
Rumeya took a slip as though it were only natural.
“You know you can choose whichever quests you like, right?”
“I’ll improve faster by going wherever you go.”
“Exactly, Tauro. The three of us are one in body and soul!”
No, we aren’t!
Tauro retorted inwardly, but if the two of them were satisfied, he could hardly object.
The quest had four places. One was already filled, so their three applications completed the team.
“Chloe, we’d like this one, please.”
“You’re taking this quest? Be careful, all of you. The outbreak appears to be serious enough that even some E-rank adventurers refused it.”
Chloe explained that she had approached adventurers in the E-rank section before posting the quest.
Only one of them had accepted.
“All right. Bob is E+ rank, so I’ll appoint him leader. The rest of you’re to follow his instructions.”
Oh, so Bob was the one who accepted. Momo only just moved in, and he’s already leaving home… No, he probably couldn’t bring himself to refuse.
Tauro was exasperated by Bob’s excessive good nature, then reminded himself that it was also one of Bob’s best qualities.
“We’ll leave first thing tomorrow morning. Let’s spend today gathering herbs and preparing for the journey.”
Tauro made the suggestion to Shin and Rumeya.
“Preparing?” they asked together.
Neither understood what preparations he meant.
“We’re only going to crush Killer Ants, right?”
Rumeya had completed several extermination quests and could think of nothing to bring besides a hammer.
“I’ll only be cutting or crushing them too. Other than my sword, what could I need?”
Shin was equally puzzled.
“I’ll explain later. For now, let’s accept a medicinal-herb gathering quest.”
The two obediently followed Tauro into the forest.
“Besides the herbs required for the quest, we’re looking for Peerless Grass, Habu Grass, and Capsai Grass.”
“What are those?” both asked.
They didn’t understand why he wanted those particular plants.
“All three contain selective toxins that are harmful to insect-type creatures.”
“Selective toxins?”
Shin repeated the unfamiliar phrase.
“A selective toxin is harmless to humans but poisonous to insects. In other words, it’s highly toxic only to certain organisms.”
“Oh!”
At last, they understood. Tauro intended to find plants that worked specifically against Killer Ants and use them during the quest.
“Got it. I’ll search for them.”
Both nodded and began looking.
“The more we find, the better, so please gather everything you can.”
Tauro headed in the opposite direction and began searching with [True Eye].
Working separately, the three gathered a tremendous quantity of plants.
There were enough to explain why no insect-type monsters lived in that forest.
“This should do. Now, please grind them up.”
Tauro pulled his pharmaceutical tools one after another from his magic storage.
The sight startled them.
“Tauro, you have magic storage?!”
Oh no!
Tauro had become so absorbed in his plan that he had forgotten to keep it secret.
“It’s only small, but one of my skills gives me a little storage. Ha ha…”
There was no hiding it after what they had seen, so he lied about its capacity instead.
“I understand why you’d keep such a useful skill secret. You could be in danger if the wrong person learned about it.”
Shin conveniently interpreted Tauro’s motives for him.
“That’s true. No matter how mature Tauro acts, he’s still only eleven.”
Rumeya nodded in agreement.
They aren’t wrong, but…
Tauro smiled ruefully to himself. He had suspected it before, but these two were simply too nice.
