Chapter 466: On Magic-Tool Street
The day after the failed attempt to disrupt the [Blessing] Ceremony, Matilda took a day to rest.
Most of the selected attendants remained near the Saint, but Tauro and his companions decided to spend the day shopping in the territorial capital.
Barriera’s capital was smaller than the Royal Capital, yet it was still a large and prosperous city. It was particularly famous as a center for magic-tool production, which immediately caught Tauro’s interest.
“I’m going to find somewhere to drink,” Ankh announced, setting off in search of a tavern despite the early hour.
“Then I’ll sample the local specialties,” Ragune said.
She followed Ankh out, but not before giving Zion a meaningful wink.
Zion stared blankly for a moment. Then realization dawned.
“I-I’m going to look at clothes!”
She hurried after Ragune, leaving Tauro and Aeris alone.
The two of them tilted their heads, unable to understand why everyone had dispersed so suddenly.
“I suppose I’ll inspect the magic tools. I may find inspiration for something new.”
“That sounds fun. Since this city is famous for magic tools, may I come with you?”
Aeris asked gently. Unlike in the past, she didn’t simply insist on joining him; she waited for Tauro to decide.
“Of course. I want your opinion too. And if we find time to conduct an experiment somewhere, having you nearby would be helpful.”
Tauro answered as naturally as he had before their separation.
“An experiment…? Don’t tell me you’ve been dragging Zion into those as well.”
Aeris sighed, though relief showed in her expression. Tauro hadn’t changed.
“I have asked everyone to help with a few experiments. Some of them involved a little danger…”
There were several experiments he had never described to Aeris, so Tauro kept his answer deliberately vague.
“I understand. I’ve grown too, and I’m much better prepared to deal with your dangerous ideas than I used to be.”
Aeris smiled.
“Then let us start with Magic-Tool Street.”
Tauro took Aeris by the hand, and the two headed into the city.
Magic-Tool Street lay some distance from the main avenue, yet it was even more crowded. Many pedestrians wore mage robes, giving the district a distinctive atmosphere. Shopkeepers demonstrated homemade devices in front of their stores, and crowds gathered wherever a demonstration looked especially interesting.
The practice had spread from an idea Tauro once proposed to the Garfish Trading Company when selling magic lanterns in the Royal Capital. Magic-tool shops had traditionally waited for customers to enter, but public demonstrations proved far more effective. The method spread rapidly and was now known among merchants as the “Giro Sugar Method.”
Completely unaware of that name, Tauro watched every demonstration with shining eyes.
He eagerly explained the mechanisms of the devices to Aeris. She asked about anything she didn’t understand, and he answered each question in detail. Before long, the two were thoroughly absorbed in exploring the street together.
“There are so many different ideas. Some of these tools resemble things I’ve made.”
Tauro didn’t know that Giro Sugar had become one of the most discussed names in the magic-tool industry. The mysterious developer’s unconventional products had overturned accepted assumptions, and many younger craftspeople regarded him as proof that a new inventor could achieve extraordinary success.
Many of Tauro’s magic-circle techniques originated in knowledge from his previous life. The world’s modern magic-tool methods had evolved by simplifying ancient techniques whose foundations were now largely lost. By good fortune, portions of Tauro’s independent research could still be applied here.
Giro Sugar had consequently become a central influence in the field, and the energy of Magic-Tool Street reflected that growing enthusiasm.
Several shops even sold products Tauro himself had developed, apparently supplied through the Garfish Trading Company.
One shopkeeper loudly advertised a Giro Sugar cooler as the first of its kind available in the city. Customers leaned toward the device and exclaimed in surprise when cold air flowed over them. Seeing their delighted reactions made Tauro smile.
Other stores had installed the same coolers indoors, making their shops comfortable even in warm weather.
Tauro and Aeris wandered through the lively district for hours, enjoying what had quietly become a date without either of them realizing it.
