Chapter 148: Fierce Battle

The first semi-final match is between Mika and Shoji.

I had thought Shoji would have the advantage after his dramatic comeback victory…

“Huh!? Mika, weren’t you using Kirby?”
“Kirby is weak! This is my real main!”

Mika chose Samus.

She’s a character from the N64 version that I played the most, so I know her well.

Her long-range attacks are extremely powerful, so the key is how well Terry (Shoji) can close the distance…
But Mika’s movement is just too good.

While keeping her opponent at bay with projectiles, the moment she breaks the shield—
She launches a death combo.

Shoji, who just had such a hard-fought match, couldn’t even get close. Mika took a flawless victory, not losing a single stock.

“Mika, you’re way too strong! I had no idea you were this good at games!”
“Neither did I! I always lost to my big brother, so I didn’t think I was all that good!”
“Just how good is Mika’s brother!?”

This might be a whole different level.

She seems stronger than me for sure, and now I really want to challenge her.

…But the tournament isn’t over yet.

Next up is the second semi-final match: Ashros vs. Sheila.

Here, Sheila demonstrated the difference in skill level.

She completely shut down Ashros, who had narrowly beaten Yato in a messy match, and advanced to the finals.

“Everyone’s really good. It was such a thorough defeat, I don’t even feel frustrated.”
“I’ve just played more. Ashros, your skills are solid too. Let’s have a rematch sometime.”
“Please let me rematch you once I’ve improved.”

After those words of respect, Sheila and Ashros shook hands.

I think both Ashros and Yato are very skilled for how much time they’ve played—there’s real potential for growth.

And now—it’s time for the finals.

I hope it’ll be a good match, but judging from the last game, Sheila probably doesn’t stand a chance.

“Mika-san, I’ll do my best and challenge you.”
“I’m here to win! I’m going to crush you with everything I’ve got!”
“Of course. I’ll give it my all too.”

Sheila seems to know her chances are slim, but she hasn’t lost her fighting spirit.

Mika uses Samus again, while Sheila chooses the Hero—a gamble-heavy character with spells, items, and Final Smashes. Her strategy relies heavily on luck.

And her gamble actually paid off—just like in her match against Helena, she got some great RNG…

But Mika’s overwhelming skill overcame even luck.

Sheila managed to take one stock from Mika—who hadn’t lost a single stock until now—but Mika returned the favor by taking three stocks with near-perfect play.

In the end, Mika wins the Smash Bros. division of the gaming tournament.

“Sheila, you’re seriously strong! Especially for someone from a place with no gaming culture!”

“Not strong enough, I still have a lot to learn. Once I’ve improved, I’d like to challenge you again.”

“Anytime! Games really are fun, huh?”

The tournament turned out even more exciting than expected.
Next year, I’d like to connect to a monitor and use a big screen.

By then, Sheila, Helena, Yato, and Ashros will all have improved.

I’d like to involve Velvet, Yui, and others who didn’t join this time, and maybe even make it a 16-person bracket.

With that dream in mind, I moved on to the board game portion of the day.

Velvet and Yui said they’d join, so that makes 11 people in total.
That’s also enough to play Werewolf, so maybe we can do that if time permits.

“Alright then, let’s play some board games. There’ll be prizes for each division winner and for the overall champion, so give it your best!”

“Wait, does that mean I’m guaranteed a prize?”

“Looks like it. It’s nothing too special, but I hope you’ll enjoy it.”

“Yay! …But honestly, rather than a prize, I want the right to challenge Sato in Smash! Sheila said you’re the strongest, right?”

Suddenly, Mika came out with that.

I also wanted to go up against her, so prize or no prize, I’ll happily accept.

My biggest weakness is not adapting well to added mechanics, but with Samus, I should be able to hold my own.

I’m sure it’ll be a good match.

“You don’t need any kind of ‘right.’ I’ll play you anytime. From what I saw earlier, you’re stronger than me anyway.”

“Sato’s always so modest! Well, if you’re up for it, let’s play after the board game!”

“Of course. Now then, let’s move on to the board games, shall we?”

And so, the board game session began.

I’m really looking forward to my match against Mika afterward,
but for now, I’ll just focus on enjoying the board games to the fullest.
