Chapter 147: Smash Bros. Division
This time, since we didn’t know everyone’s skill levels, the tournament bracket was decided completely at random.
Everyone drew a slip of paper numbered 1 through 8, and their spot in the bracket was determined by the number they drew.
Round 1, Match 1: Mika-san vs. Joel-kun
Right off the bat, we had Mika-san, one of the tournament favorites, facing off against Joel-kun.
Joel-kun looked a bit flustered having to go up against such a strong opponent right away.
Among our group, Joel-kun plays a fair bit too, but in terms of strength, he’s generally seen as just above Yato-san at the bottom.
If Mika-san really has put in a lot of time with the game, Joel-kun doesn’t stand a chance.
And just as expected, Mika-san completely shut Joel-kun down—she didn’t give him a single opening and effortlessly took all three of his stocks.
“T-That was way too strong! I couldn’t even grab any items, and I didn’t even get to touch the Smash Ball!”
“Fufufu! I really wanted to go easy on you, but when it comes to Smash Bros., I just can’t hold back. Sorry!”
“…I’ll train more, and next time I’ll definitely put up a good fight!”
“Not even aiming for a win next time, huh!”
This time, we went with items-on rules to allow for some comebacks, but if the skill gap is this wide, items don’t really matter.
Honestly, Mika-san might even be stronger than me.
Her gameplay clearly showed that she’s a seasoned veteran. She might have played online a lot too.
The sudden appearance of such a dark horse in the very first match really sharpened the atmosphere.
Round 1, Match 2: Ren-san vs. Shoji-san
Most of the players whose skills are unknown were grouped on the left side of the bracket, and this matchup looked especially intense.
Just as predicted, it was a heated clash between two players who are both used to games.
It was a fighting game showdown—Ken vs. Terry—so the match featured a grounded and intense back-and-forth.
They each took two stocks from each other in an even battle.
But on the final stock, Ren-san’s Ken completely overwhelmed Shoji-san’s Terry.
Shoji-san’s damage quickly rose past 100%, and it looked like Ren-san had it in the bag…
But then Shoji-san launched a fierce comeback using Terry’s Super Special Moves, which activate when he’s in a pinch.
A perfectly timed Power Geyser sealed the deal, giving Shoji-san a dramatic comeback victory.
“Damn it! I thought I had it won!”
“Yesss! You panicked and got sloppy!”
“I knew Terry’s super moves would be a problem, but getting chunked like that really threw me off…”
We were supposed to be playing board games on the side, but the match got so intense that we all ended up watching.
Cheers erupted at Shoji-san’s amazing comeback—Smash Bros. really is a fun game.
Round 1, Match 3: Yato-san vs. Ashros-san — Dragon Clan Duel
Hoping for another thrilling match like the last, next came a Dragon Clan battle: Yato-san vs. Ashros-san.
But unlike the previous match, this one was more chaotic and heartwarming than competitive.
In the end, Ashros-san snagged the Smash Ball that Yato-san had been chasing all over the stage and finished the match with a Final Smash.
“Nooo! I lost!”
“Phew… I somehow pulled it off. Milady, you were really strong!”
“Ashros, you were strong too! Games really are fun!”
It wasn’t a high-level match, but it was entertaining in its own right, and we gave both players a round of applause.
Immediately afterward, the last two competitors of Round 1 stepped forward.
Round 1, Final Match: Sheila-san vs. Helena
Of course, it was Sheila-san vs. Helena—two rivals who have always trained together.
This was a match we were all looking forward to.
“I usually lose more, but this time I’m going to win!”
“I won’t lose. I’ll defeat you again.”
After some light-hearted trash talk, the game began.
Sheila-san chose Hero, while Helena went with Mario.
The match unfolded with Sheila-san using items and spells to keep up with Helena’s all-rounder playstyle.
Hero is a character with a lot of randomness, and this time luck was on Sheila-san’s side—she kept landing critical hits and even sent Helena flying with a Whack spell.
In the blink of an eye, Helena lost two stocks. Honestly, it was kind of a sad sight.
Helena did manage to land an aerial combo and take one stock, but Sheila-san also secured the Smash Ball, and finished the match with Gigaslash.
“Waaah! Sheila-san, that was so unfair!”
“I was lucky this time, but a win’s a win. I’ll gladly face you again anytime.”
“Next time, we’re playing with no items!”
With these two, a no-items match might actually be more fun.
Still, both of them have gotten really good.
It’s hard to believe they had never touched games just a short while ago.
Even though Helena lost badly, it was mostly due to bad luck—her gameplay was solid.
And now, I’m excited to see how far Sheila-san can go against Mika-san or Shoji-san.
