Chapter 47: Crisis

“I may be strong in battle, but I have no experience in governing a tribe, and I wasn’t mentally prepared for it at all. Maybe… it should’ve been me who stayed behind to cover the retreat, not my father.”

Recalling all the recent misfortunes, Lusha couldn’t help but blame himself.

Seeing the once strong and confident Lusha looking so dejected, Kerman couldn’t bear it.

“Lusha! Your father had grown old. He pinned his hopes on the younger generation—and you are one of the most outstanding among them. Saying something like that is a betrayal of the former chief’s expectations!”

“Ah! I didn’t mean it that way!”

Lusha had always deeply respected his father, viewing him as a role model.
How could he possibly let down that example?

“It’s just… I don’t know what to do next. Every time I think about how my decision could determine the survival of the entire tribe, my head spins. I wish I had ten more brains.”

Clutching his head, Lusha looked utterly tormented.

He genuinely wished his mind were filled with knowledge about governance, instead of just fighting and war.

“Lusha, just choose whatever option you think is best for the Sinking Sand Tribe.”

To ease Lusha’s pressure, Kerman said gently:

“Even though I once said humans can’t be trusted… If you choose to make a deal with them, I’ll support your decision. No one in the tribe will go against you—after all, you’re the one we chose as chief.”

“Kerman… thank you.”

Lusha was deeply moved.
To have a friend who would share the weight of leadership and pain with him—it truly was a blessing.

“In the past, my father handled these matters… I finally understand now why he made certain compromises. It was all for the continuation of the tribe. Back then, I thought he was being too weak… and now I feel ashamed of my arrogance.”

“You know, when you’re worrying about the tribe’s survival like this— it’s said your father was the same way when he was young.”

“Really?”

Lusha’s eyes widened in disbelief.

In his mind, his father had always been someone who could think calmly and make the best decisions for the tribe.
He never imagined that even his father had times of doubt.

“Yes. The elders said your father also used to admire brute strength. He was the strongest warrior in the tribe at the time. When he became chief, he realized he had no idea how to govern—he looked distressed all the time.”

“Then how did he…”

“You want to know how he eventually learned to lead the tribe, right?”

Lusha nodded.

“He learned. When he didn’t understand something, he asked the elders.
He figured it out step by step, learning through experience. So don’t beat yourself up over it—your father started out just like you.”

“So that’s how it was…”

Thanks to Kerman’s encouragement, Lusha felt the weight on his shoulders lighten.
His negative emotions were gradually released.

And perhaps because of that, he suddenly had a moment of clarity—and came up with a plan that would benefit the Sinking Sand Tribe.

To ensure the tribe could survive the winter safely, they definitely had to accept the deal with the humans.
However, he couldn’t agree outright—he had to propose a few conditions to guarantee the tribe’s safety.

Even though he didn’t fully…

They didn’t know whether the humans would accept their conditions—but they had to at least try.

With that in mind, Lusha decided to consult Kerman on what kind of terms they should propose.

“Kerman—”

“Ah!! A monster!”

“Where is it?! Kill it!”

“Get out of the way—aaah!”

Hearing the commotion from the tribe’s direction, Lusha and Kerman exchanged glances before quickly grabbing their weapons and rushing back.

The temporary camp of the Sinking Sand Tribe was located in a relatively flat forested area.
Most of the tribe members were gathered in the center, while lizard warriors stood guard along the perimeter.

But because they had to watch all directions—and didn’t have enough warriors—it was easy for a sneaky monster to find a weak spot and break in.

“Where’s the monster?!”

As soon as Lusha appeared carrying his axe, the panicking tribe members seemed to regain their composure, as if their backbone had arrived.

“Chief! Over here! The monster’s already been killed!”

Not far off, a tribesman shouted while holding something up.

Lusha and Kerman quickly approached, and the tribe members cleared a path for them.

Lusha slung his giant axe onto his back and stepped forward.

“Is anyone hurt?”

He asked the tribesman.

The man shook his head.

“Report, Chief! Luckily we spotted it in time—no one was injured. Just a few got scared.”

That was a relief. Lusha let out a long breath.

Then, he looked down at the monster that had attacked the tribe.

It was a wolf with deep crimson fur, razor-sharp teeth and claws.
A long spear was lodged in its head, and its face was twisted in a death grimace.
Thick, steaming blood had pooled around it, bubbling as it oozed.

Kerman’s expression suddenly turned grave.

“Chief… this is a Bloodthirst Wolf!”

Lusha also grew serious. He’d hunted many monsters in the Mysterious Forest—he recognized the species immediately.

Bloodthirst Wolves were extremely dangerous monsters, with a keen sense for the smell of blood.
They usually hunted in packs—never fewer than thirty to forty.
Once they chose a target, they would relentlessly attack as a group, even at the cost of their own lives.

The best way to stop them was to kill the alpha wolf, but those alphas usually stayed hidden in the back, giving commands from the shadows—rarely showing themselves.

“Why would a Bloodthirst Wolf show up here? We’re on the forest’s outer edge!”

A nearby tribesman cried in fear.

Indeed, these monsters normally appeared deeper inside the forest.

“It was probably drawn here by the scent of blood from our wounded. Didn’t think they’d be this persistent… chasing us all the way here.”

“Should’ve ditched the wounded long ago! They’re dead weight—and now they’ve brought disaster!”

“Yeah! We should’ve left them behind!”

“Ugh! They’re nothing but trouble.”

Someone started the accusation, and before long many others joined in, blaming the injured tribe members.

“Silence!”

Lusha roared furiously.

Seeing their chief enraged, everyone quickly shut their mouths.

Lusha swept his gaze across the crowd and shouted:

“The Sinking Sand Tribe does not abandon its own! Not even if they’re injured!”

“Chief, we must prepare quickly. This Bloodthirst Wolf was only a scout. The main pack will be here soon.”

Kerman urged.

“Everyone—follow my command!”

Sensing the urgency, Lusha swiftly issued a series of orders, placing the entire tribe in combat readiness.

The children, elderly, and wounded were gathered in the very center of the camp.
Younger tribe members with some combat ability—regardless of gender—stood protectively around them.

The most experienced lizard warriors were positioned on the outermost ring, gripping their weapons tightly, eyes locked on the surrounding forest in full alert.

At this point, it was too late to flee—their only option was to brace for battle.
