Chapter 6: Two Types of Magic Systems

Not long after, Clive arrived, panting heavily.

As the treasurer of Bianshu Town, he lived a fairly comfortable life. His figure was quite plump, sporting a small round belly. He had nearly squinting eyes, a pair of drooping moustaches, and a balding crown, with the remaining hair combed over to cover the bald spot.

“S-sorry, M-Marquis… P-please… give me a moment to catch… my breath.”

After several deep breaths, Clive finally managed to calm down. It was clear he’d rushed over in a hurry.

Placing a hand to his chest, he saluted and asked:

“Marquis, what do you need from me?”

“Go to the square and issue a new recruitment order. I need a batch of general labourers, haulers, stone breakers, and construction workers—with builders as top priority.”

“Marquis, may I ask… what is this for?”

Clive asked carefully.

“To manufacture cement, so we can quickly repair the eastern breach in the northern wall and improve our defenses against the undead.”

When he heard the word cement, a puzzled look crossed Clive’s face. Owen thought he’d ask what it was, but he didn’t.

“Understood, Marquis. I’ll take care of it right away.”

With that, Clive withdrew.

Owen had already done plenty of strange things in the past, so Clive wasn’t particularly surprised. For example, he had previously sent people out to gather seeds in hopes of growing something on this cursed land—only to end in failure.

Now there was this cement business. Though Clive didn’t know what it was, he figured it would fail too, so he didn’t press for details.

That said, Clive was surprisingly efficient. By the very next day, he had recruited enough people.

Owen handed over the newly recruited builders to Viru, instructing him to renovate a mud-brick house on the outskirts of town near the quarry according to specific guidelines. The rest were placed on standby for now.

Incidentally, in last night’s dream, now that Winston knew Owen was a magician, he excitedly asked him to demonstrate some magic. Since it was Owen’s own dream, replicating real-life magic was easy.

After witnessing magic firsthand, Winston had a million questions about it.

As repayment for the cement production method, Owen shared everything he knew about magic without holding anything back.

There are two magical systems in this world:

  1. Elemental Magic
  2. Faith-based Magic

Before getting into the systems, it’s worth noting: most people have some degree of mana, but for the vast majority, it’s so weak that it can be ignored.

Only those with a strong natural mana capacity are qualified to become mages.

In general, one’s mana has a single elemental attribute. For example, Owen has fire-aligned mana, so he can only use fire magic. There are rare individuals whose mana contains multiple elemental attributes—these are considered prodigies.

The six basic elements are:
Wind, Water, Earth, Fire, Light, and Darkness.

Elemental magic is relatively straightforward: it involves converting your mana into the elemental attribute and then releasing it from the body. Chanting spells helps beginners accelerate the mana transformation process.

Faith-based magic, however, is more complex. The caster must believe in a deity—and do so with deep sincerity. Only then can they form a faint connection with that god.

Due to this requirement, most users of faith-based magic are clergy or religious personnel.

Before casting, the user usually prays to their deity. Their mana is then automatically transformed into holy energy, which is then released as a spell. A key feature of this magic is that it ignores mana’s elemental affinity—all mana can be transformed into sacred energy.

Having satisfied Winston’s curiosity, it was now his turn to talk about the world on his side.

As the two continued chatting, their conversation drifted into various academic subjects. This sparked great interest in Owen, who then asked Winston to teach him those disciplines. Winston was happy to oblige, and thus, the dream realm became Owen’s classroom.

For the next three days, Owen handled daily affairs and practiced magic during the day, while studying with Winston in his dreams at night.

Whenever he became too tired to continue learning, Owen would exit the dreamscape and enter normal sleep. When he opened his eyes, it would already be morning. Life felt quite fulfilling.

This morning, Owen’s system underwent its first upgrade.

In the study at the castle, he sat at his desk watching a progress bar slowly rise from 0% to 50%.

Throughout the process, Owen had a nagging feeling that something felt off about today. After thinking for a while, he realized—it was because he couldn’t communicate with Winston during the upgrade. The silence was unusually noticeable.

Once he figured it out, Owen chuckled to himself. He used to complain that Winston talked too much, but now that it was quiet, it felt too peaceful.

Speaking of Winston, Owen always had the impression that he was immensely wealthy—and incredibly idle.

From what Owen had learned, the XiChuang Group behind Wenster was a colossal enterprise that managed over a dozen resource-based planets, owned hundreds of space vessels, and had made major strides in numerous advanced scientific fields.

“Planets, huh…”

Mentioning planets, Owen couldn’t help but feel amazed. Not long ago, he’d believed that the entire continent and surrounding seas existed on a flat plane.

But now, thanks to Winston, he had a basic understanding of the universe, vastly expanding his worldview.

Of course, this was also due to Owen’s exceptional ability to absorb new information. Even Winston once commented that it’s difficult for most people to change their ingrained beliefs—but Owen had done so effortlessly.

Ding! The progress bar hit 100%. The system upgrade was complete.

All the text on the pop-up window was in the local language—evidently, Winston had localized the system interface.

Closing the window, Owen tapped the red icon in the upper left corner.

A full-screen window filled with text opened before him, titled:

System Upgrade Notes

He skimmed through it and found that aside from system optimizations, three new features had been added:

  1. Emergency Call Function
Although Winston was very free, he couldn’t stay in contact 24/7. If an emergency arises, Owen could now actively call him using this feature.

Finally, a way to reach out—until now, communication had always been passive.

  1. Folder Function
The system could now receive files from Winston and store them for later viewing. Supported files included text, images, and more.

This meant Winston could send over blueprints, and Owen could then build things based on them.
He could also receive textbooks on various subjects—allowing him to study even outside of dreams.

  1. Visual Data Function
Owen could now select specific metrics and display real-time data in his vision.

Originally, the “Interdimensional Module No. 3” could detect all sorts of data, but the information had always been sent straight to Winston.
Now Owen could access the data directly himself.

In short, the upgrade brought many practical improvements that made it easier for Owen to work with Winston.

After closing the upgrade notes, Owen noticed that three new icons had appeared on the main interface, alongside the existing teleportation icon:

  • Red Phone → Emergency Call
  • Yellow Folder → File Storage
  • White Eye with “01” in the pupil → Visual Data Access
