Chapter 89: The Angel in White

The speech ended, and Kenya turned to look at Lord.

“…So this is what it’s come to… Odin actually teamed up with the World Union.”

“Yeah. Now we’ve got to fight both Odin and the World Union. I told you before, didn’t I? Out of three powers, if two start fighting, the third one benefits. But if two of them join forces and gang up on the remaining one, the odds change. And knowing my brother, I figured that’s exactly what he’d do — because he’s the only one who can.”

Odin had moved exactly as Lord predicted.

If they’d fought on the day of the Imperial Sword Tournament, the World Union would’ve been the one to reap the rewards.

But once Odin joined hands with them, the situation changed completely.

“So, what now, Lord? I’m ready to fight.”

“Yeah… but first, you need to get yourself back into shape. You’re still not fully recovered, are you?”

“Well, that’s true, but…”

Kenya had come down with pneumonia during the Imperial Sword Tournament.

Even though the latest medical tech had treated him, pushing his body too hard afterward had worsened the symptoms.

“Besides, from here on, this is my battlefield. You’ve fought enough. Leave the rest to me and get some rest.”

Lord stood up and turned his back to Kenya.

“I’m not done yet!”

Kenya protested, standing up — but Lord silenced him with a raised hand.

“Kenya… it’s true you defeated me. So I get why you’re worried. But,”

Lord turned to face him.

“Who do you think I am? When I step onto the battlefield, defeat doesn’t exist.”

A wry, almost cocky smile played on his lips as he looked at Kenya.

“As long as you’re not there, that is.”

The true strength of Lord Asgard — the undefeated commander who made the world tremble.

On the battlefield, there was no one who could stand at his side.

The devilish genius who seized half of the EU without a single loss.

That boy was the world’s enemy — unbeatable by anyone.

Anyone, except perhaps…

The strongest knight in the world — the White Knight.

Driven away by Lord, Kenya had returned straight to the hospital.

A few days passed, and his health had improved quite a bit.

“Kenya, I’m starting maintenance on Take-Mikazuchi. It’s going to take a while, so make sure you rest properly in the meantime. The World Union could attack any day.”

Tanaka returned to Kenya’s hospital room, where he was lying on the bed.

It was the first time since Sieg’s funeral, but he seemed to be slowly regaining his spirits.

“I’m feeling a lot better, at least. …So what about you, Tanaka? What are you going to do now?”

“…I don’t know. Sieg’s last words were for me to look after you. Should I go back to the World Union now? Or wait for Lord to defeat Odin…? I’ve spent so much time tinkering with machines that this kind of thing is out of my depth. Politics isn’t really my strong suit.”

Japan had indeed been retaken by the World Union.

But would abandoning Kenya now and returning to Japan — betraying Sieg’s last wish — really be the right thing to do?

Or should he stay and support Kenya to the end?

Tanaka couldn’t decide.

“The reason I joined the Resistance was for Japan’s sake. Or rather, to be precise… well, never mind. The point is, it was because something precious was taken from me. But now…”

Tanaka reached out and gently ruffled Kenya’s hair.

“You’ve become someone precious to me, too. So there’s no way I could just leave you behind, Kenya.”

That hand was so gentle, it reminded Kenya of Sieg.

“Tanaka…”

“Well, if the enemy shows up, I’ll be the first to run, so don’t count on me too much. I’m absolutely useless in a fight.”

“Pfft… got it. I’ll handle the stalling.”

The two of them shared a laugh. Then, as if realizing something, Tanaka chuckled again.

“Well, I’d better get going. Call me if you need anything. I’ve got everything ready to move whenever — Lord let me use the maintenance facility near Valhalla Castle.”

“That’s great! Got it, I’ll call you.”

“Alright, I’ll leave the rest to the young ones.”

“Huh?”

As Tanaka left the room, another figure entered as if to take his place — a silver-haired girl.

Long, silvery hair, pale white skin, deep blue eyes.

Her chest was full, her curves unmistakably feminine.

And for some reason…

“…Why the nurse outfit, Reina?”

“I thought you’d like it… so I borrowed it. Want me to do something naughty?”

“Pfft—!”

Kenya choked hard, coughing up a storm.

For some reason, Reina, dressed in a nurse uniform, had walked into the room.

Beautiful women could pull off anything — and no man could possibly dislike a nurse outfit.

What man hadn’t, at some point, imagined a sexy nurse doing something naughty?

“…I was just kidding, Kenya. Unless you want me to. Should I tear it off? Promise~♥”

“Where the hell are you learning this stuff…?”

Since that day, Reina had started laughing more openly, showing her emotions.

Even after remembering her mother’s death, she’d overcome it for Kenya’s sake.

And then, not long after, came her father’s death.

Even so, Reina had managed to endure it.

That day, when she and Kaguya cried together, it was as if she had let everything out.

Of course, she was probably still sad.

But she seemed so much brighter now.

“Kenya, time for your meal. You want me to feed you, don’t you?”

“No, I can eat by mys—”

“Patients have to do what they’re told. Mep! Bad boy.”

“What was that? Do it again.”

Reina held up a single finger in front of Kenya, placed her other hand on her hip, and struck an adorably strict pose that left no room for disobedience.

“No! Bad! Hmm? What’s the matter, Kenya-kun?”

Kenya closed his eyes, forcing himself to think of Sieg.
Stay calm. Stay calm. You promised, remember?

But then Reina moved closer, sitting down on the bed right beside him.
Her scent drifted into his nose, overwhelming his thoughts.

(Kaguya… I’m sorry if I break our promise. A man doesn’t think with his head — he thinks with what’s below.)

“Reina!”

“Kyaa~♥”

Bzzt, bzzt, bzzt.

Just as Kenya was about to break the promise he’d made — not to flirt with Reina, as agreed with Kaguya — his device rang sharply, as if to scold him.

Opening the message, Kenya read:

If you break our promise, I’ll bite you.

“Wha—?!”

A chill ran down his spine and the blood drained from his face.

The blissful atmosphere from moments ago vanished, replaced by icy dread.

A follow-up message arrived, getting straight to the point:

On a serious note:
The World Union and Odin have begun preparing for their advance.
You’ve probably heard by now too.

I’ve been assigned — well, I volunteered — to defend Japan.
So you won’t have to fight me. My only goal is to take back Japan,
and make sure it’s never stolen again.

“…So it’s finally starting.”

Kenya let out a quiet sigh, fully grasping from Kaguya’s message that the war was about to begin.
At least she wouldn’t be on the battlefield. That was one small comfort.

“If we defeat Odin… will the world finally know peace?”

“I believe it will. Everyone wants peace, after all.”

Reina answered gently.

“…Yeah. You’re right.”

Reina stood up, her playful offer to feed him apparently nothing more than a joke.

“Well then, I’ll be going. I can’t stay long, but I’ll come again tomorrow.”

“Yeah… You seem busy though. Will you be okay?”

“Yes! I’m going to become stronger!”

“…I see.”

Kenya tilted his head slightly, sensing something from her determination.
Maybe she was training on her own? He accepted the thought with a small nod.

And with that, Reina, still dressed in her nurse outfit, left the room.

Kenya, left alone, looked a little lonely as he drifted back to sleep — resting for the battle that was soon to come.

Later…

“You came again, huh…”

“I’ll keep coming. I have to become stronger. So please, teach me how to fight.”

In another room of the same hospital, Reina stood before a man, speaking with clear and serious eyes.

“Is it for him?”

“Yes. I need to be able to stand beside him.”

“…Half-hearted effort won’t even let you see his back, you know. That man is—”

“That’s exactly what I want.”

The two locked eyes.
The man stared into the fire burning deep within Reina’s gaze.

“…Good eyes. You remind me of your father. But before we start — tell me one thing, Reina. Why the nurse outfit?”

“I wanted to make Kenya-kun happy. Men like this kind of thing, don’t they?”

The man let out a chuckle, then burst into laughter.

“Hah! Yeah, no man would hate that. I bet he was over the moon. The guy’s head over heels for you, after all.”

Hearing that, Reina blushed bright red and swayed bashfully, clearly pleased.

“And now you don’t even bother using a fake name around me. You shouted it loud enough the other day. I’m sure the others heard too, but they probably think it’s just a nickname.”

The man stood up.

His body, still wrapped in bandages, was missing his right arm — a one-armed man.

“Fine then. Truth is, I’m already well enough to be discharged, but I’ve been… lacking motivation. Still, I guess it’s my job to train the next generation… I have to pass it on.”

He turned to Reina and looked her square in the eyes.

“I won’t be as gentle as your boyfriend, you know.”

“That’s exactly why I came to you. Kenya-kun spoils me too much. Besides him, I don’t know anyone stronger than you.”

Reina had made her decision — to train so she wouldn’t be a burden, so she could stand beside Kenya.

And the first person who came to mind was this one-armed man.

The man who had once fought a life-or-death battle against Kenya, competing for the pinnacle of the world.
If there was anyone other than Kenya who could be called the strongest, it was him.

“Alright then. I’ll train you. But the moment you start whining, I’ll stop.”

“Yes, sir! Thank you very much!”

Reina bowed her head deeply, her posture perfect and full of determination.

“Osiris-san!”
