Chapter 319: Reputation in the Royal Capital
The previous day, Tauro and his companions had completed their usual quest, Assistance with Dungeon Conquest, at the Dragonfolk Village Adventurers’ Guild branch. Now they were once again visiting the guild headquarters in the Royal Capital.
“That’s Black-Gold Wings—the team led by a thirteen-year-old boy.”
As the four of them entered through one of the many doors of the enormous guild building, whispers rose among the adventurers who noticed them.
“He really is a child. Are you sure the others aren’t just carrying him because he’s new here?”
“No, the stories are true. The other members are impressive too. I recommend that black-haired beauty, Ragune—the shield specialist. I fought beside them once during an orc-army subjugation. She stood alone against the enemy’s magic and protected everyone behind her. After seeing that, I started training my own shield skills.”
“Really? I’m more interested in the man with the greatsword. Can he actually swing something that big?”
“That’s Ankh, Black-Gold Wings’ strongest attacker. He handles that greatsword like a stick, closes on an enemy with the speed of the wind, and takes an orc’s head off without effort. He’s incredible.”
“Then what about the young girl? She looks like a mage.”
“She has three jobs: [Mage], [Priest], and [Barrier Master]. She’s a genuine prodigy. Until the boy returned, she was the team’s leader, and she’s excellent at directing the others in battle.”
“So what makes the child leading them so special?”
“He’s an archer. He normally carries only a shortsword, but he has [Magic Storage]. He can draw his bow the instant he needs it and place a killing shot exactly where it belongs. His arrows are far more powerful than you’d expect from a child. He must have been born with remarkable talent.”
“The Royal Capital really is something else… And people like that are still only in the D-rank band?”
The voices carried clearly to Tauro and his companions, but all four pretended not to hear.
They had been hearing similar conversations frequently of late.
“They’re praising you quite a lot, Tauro.”
Aeris made no attempt to hide how pleased she was.
“Leader, what are we doing today?” Ankh asked. “The usual quests over there are suspended for now, aren’t they?”
By “over there,” he meant the Dragonfolk Village branch, and by their usual quests, he meant the requests supporting the dungeon conquest.
The expedition had begun a rest period the previous day, and everyone involved had returned to the surface.
“Hmm… I heard they’ll enter the dungeon again after roughly two weeks of rest. That gives us enough time to accept a longer quest here.”
Tauro studied the request board as he considered their options.
“Black-Gold Wings, perfect timing! A B-rank team has requested you by name. Could you come over and hear the details?”
A receptionist who had noticed them hurried over. Since the team visited the Royal Capital only occasionally, she had apparently been watching for them.
“Of course.”
They were accustomed to named requests by now and followed her without hesitation.
“A request has arrived from another branch to subjugate a Goblin General. We must finish assembling the force today, because the party leaves early tomorrow morning.”
“A Goblin General?” Aeris asked. “Isn’t that normally a target in the C-rank band? Why is a B-rank team participating, and why did they request us?”
“The B-rank team Silver Goblin Hunters nominated you. A Goblin General alone would normally be a C-rank target, but this group includes an unusually large number of Hobgoblins and appears to have grown into an army. The local branch can’t deal with it using its own adventurers, so it requested support from the Royal Capital headquarters.”
“How large is the army?” Tauro asked.
“The latest report lists approximately three hundred Goblins, eighty Hobgoblins, several Goblin Mages, and one Goblin General.”
The receptionist’s expression was grave.
“About four hundred in total?” Ankh frowned. “Where did that many come from? And eighty Hobgoblins will be troublesome.”
His surprise was understandable. Hobgoblins were a higher species of Goblin and normally fell within the D-rank band. Each was roughly human-sized and could fight as well as several ordinary Goblins.
“How many adventurers will the Royal Capital headquarters send?” Tauro asked.
“Silver Goblin Hunters will command the force. In addition to them, we plan to dispatch one C-rank team and four D-rank teams to cooperate with the local adventurers.”
“Isn’t that rather few?”
Ragune tilted her head.
“The local branch has no B-rank teams, but it does have several C-rank and D-rank teams. Viscount Danton has also mobilized his territorial troops, so this was judged to be sufficient.”
“The territorial troops too? I see. What’s the current situation?”
“According to yesterday’s report, the two sides were still facing each other without a decisive engagement.”
“Where exactly are we going?”
“Viscount Danton’s territory, in the northwestern mountains. The journey takes three days each way from the Royal Capital.”
“That’s fairly close.” Tauro looked at his companions. “What do you think?”
“They’re waiting for us, aren’t they?” Ankh said with a grin. “There’s no reason to refuse.”
“Agreed. They requested us specifically. We can hardly say no.”
Aeris nodded.
“If everyone else is going, I’m going too!”
As usual, Ragune readily agreed.
“Then we’ll accept. We leave early tomorrow morning, correct?”
“Yes! Thank you very much.”
The relieved receptionist finally exhaled. With Black-Gold Wings included, the required force was complete, and she immediately began the registration procedure.
