Chapter 262: Reporting and Cutting Through the Wind

The morning after returning home with Pella, Tauro visited Chief Ryuga’s residence and reported the successful [Spatial Transfer] experiment.

Ryuga had already received reports from Ryuko and the leader of Tauro’s escort, but hearing the details directly from Tauro filled him with joy.

“Does this mean we can safely send the conquest force to the deepest floor we have previously reached?”

“Yes. That was the 201st floor, correct? The escort leader confirmed the number, so there’s no mistake. The remaining question is how many people I can transport at once, but judging from the magical power consumed during the experiment, I should be able to move a considerable number.”

“The conquest force first reached the 201st floor several decades ago. To think that we can finally return there… The conquest force consists of three five-person teams, and its support force consists of six five-person teams. That makes forty-five people in total. Can you transport them all?”

“Yes. I may need to drink magic-restoration potions, but I can do it.”

“That’s wonderful news. Thanks to you, Tauro-dono, the dragonfolk may finally fulfill our long-held dream of conquering the dungeon.”

Tauro was surprised that the dungeon extended for at least 201 floors.

“We didn’t know how deep it went either,” Ryuga continued. “That uncertainty placed tremendous pressure on the conquest force. Reaching the 201st floor on foot would require several months in one direction, and they’d still need enough supplies and strength for the return journey. Your [Spatial Transfer] is truly a blessing.”

Uncomfortable being praised for an achievement he hadn’t yet completed, Tauro politely declined Ryuga’s offer of hospitality and left the residence.

His most important task that day was replacing his equipment. He also wanted to try something that had interested him since arriving in the village: the pulley transport system descending the mountainside.

Several ropes stretched from a small station near the chief’s residence toward different parts of the lower village. As Tauro watched, a dragonfolk woman sat in a loop hanging from one pulley and glided smoothly down the slope.

“They really are accustomed to this.”

An attendant waited inside the small station. After asking each passenger’s destination, he attached the appropriate pulley to one of the ropes.

“May I ride as well?” Tauro asked.

“Of course. You’re Tauro-dono, correct? Thank you for everything you did for the village. Where would you like to go?”

Tauro’s human appearance made him easy to recognize as the village’s rumored savior.

“I want to visit the armor shops.”

“Then you need the second rope. Please wait a moment.”

The attendant quickly attached a pulley.

“There may be a strong jolt when you arrive, so take care. You don’t have a brake, do you? Use this.”

He handed Tauro a V-shaped wooden stick.

“Press this against the rope to create friction and control your speed.”

Tauro understood. Descending the steep slope at full speed would be dangerous.

After thanking the attendant, he slipped his body through the loop hanging from the pulley and sat securely in it.

The attendant pushed him forward.

Tauro shot down the mountainside, cutting through the wind as the lower village rushed toward him.

“Whoa!”

The ride was exhilarating, but the destination approached quickly. Tauro pressed the V-shaped brake against the rope and gradually reduced his speed.

Despite it being his first attempt, he stopped neatly at the end of the line.

The attendant stationed below immediately removed the pulley so that the next passenger could descend safely. Tauro thanked him and stepped away.

Now came the main event: shopping.

Tauro intended to replace his leather armor and purchase gauntlets, shin guards, and a shield. He wanted equipment that would preserve his speed and mobility, although he planned to decide only after examining the available items.

Excited to shop for the first time in quite a while, he headed first to Dragon’s Breath Armor Shop, which was said to offer the village’s largest selection.

The shop occupied a large building facing the main street at the foot of the mountain. Tauro read the sign, entered, and found a sales floor even larger than he had imagined, filled with an impressive variety of armor.
