Chapter 220: Continued Magic Experiments
Tauro had deliberately avoided using [Creation Magic (Weak)] too often.
He had nearly died from it once, but that wasn’t his only reason. The magic felt so far removed from the fantasy world he loved that he feared it might ruin the romance of it.
For example, he had once considered creating a pistol. He had immediately rejected the idea because such a weapon felt completely out of place, and because he didn’t understand its internal structure well enough to trust that it wouldn’t explode.
For those reasons, he had used [Creation Magic (Weak)] only when necessary.
Even so, it was undeniably versatile, and experimenting with it could reveal safer and more useful applications.
The ability’s full name was [Creation Magic (Weak)]. Tauro had a vague theory that the “Weak” restriction was related to its need for materials and its enormous magic-power cost.
The more complicated and useful an object was, the more magic power it consumed. Even allowing for that, however, the cost was excessive.
The magic sword that had nearly killed him had required several processes at once: creating the sword itself, incorporating part of a labyrinth core, and using a magic stone to grant it magical properties. Tauro had undertaken all of that without understanding how much power it would require.
He had hoped that acquiring [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme) might compensate for the weakness and reduce the cost of [Creation Magic (Weak)].
It didn’t.
As a preliminary test, Tauro created a jointless wooden chair. The cost seemed somewhat lower than before, so he became optimistic and decided to make special weapons for Ragune and Ankh.
He began with a spear designed exclusively for Ragune. He used prepared iron ore, oak for the shaft, a fragment of a labyrinth core, and the magic stone from the ogre he had previously defeated.
The result was another near-death experience. The magic-restoration potion Tauro drank just before collapsing kept him alive long enough for Aeris to pour her own magic power into him while using recovery magic.
In his fading consciousness, Tauro heard the Voice of the World, but that was a matter for another time.
“I thought a spear would be safer because only the tip needed much metal, but I was wrong…”
When Tauro regained consciousness, he reflected on his miscalculation while still dizzy.
“Does that mean [Magic Manipulation] (Extreme) can’t affect [Creation Magic (Weak)]?”
Aeris asked while he drank another magic-restoration potion.
“I don’t know. [Creation Magic] itself may be unusual, or the problem may be the (Weak) restriction. I doubt an ability marked (Extreme) would normally have such a limitation.”
Tauro considered the question.
“Still, you successfully created a spear made specifically for Ragune. That part was a success. Good work, Tauro.”
Aeris tried to focus on the positive result.
Tauro couldn’t share her optimism. The attempt had nearly killed him again, and without Aeris he might truly have died.
“But it would be unfair if I made a special spear for Ragune and nothing for Ankh.”
Considering the size of Ankh’s greatsword, Tauro was certain that creating it in one attempt would kill him outright.
“I’ve been thinking about that. Why do you have to make the entire weapon at once?”
Aeris’s question was painfully simple.
“What do you mean?”
Tauro was already beginning to realize what he had overlooked.
“Divide the work into stages. First create the greatsword, then recover your magic power. Next incorporate the labyrinth-core fragment and recover again. After that, add the magic stone and recover once more. It’ll take longer, but the amount consumed at any one time will be much smaller.”
Aeris was right.
Tauro dropped to his knees, devastated that his obsession with efficiency had blinded him to such an obvious solution.
The staged method would take more time, effort, materials, and potions, but it would greatly reduce the chance of losing his life.
“All right. Let’s try it. Aeris, stay with me a little longer.”
Tauro drank another magic-restoration potion and took a large quantity of iron ore from [Magic Storage].
“I’ll, but don’t push yourself too far.”
To prepare for another emergency, Aeris also drank a magic-restoration potion.
