Chapter 186: The Female Warrior, Continued
The female warrior introduced herself as Ragune.
Despite Aeris’s earlier guess, she wasn’t lizardfolk.
“I’m not a lizardfolk. I’m dragonfolk.”
“What? Dragonfolk are incredibly rare!” Aeris exclaimed. “Now that I think about it, lizardfolk don’t have horns. Those must be a dragonfolk characteristic.”
“I dislike being mistaken for lizardfolk, but it happens occasionally,” Ragune replied, showing some understanding.
“Then you clearly aren’t from this area. Why did you come here?” Tauro asked.
“I heard rumors that many rare, high-quality medicinal herbs grow wild here. An epidemic is spreading through my village, so I came in search of something that might cure it.”
“I understand. Tell me what kind of herbs you need, and I’ll help you find them.”
Tauro possessed [Plant Knowledge], and [True Eye] could draw upon that information. If the required plants grew anywhere nearby, he was confident that he could locate them.
“That would be wonderful, but how am I supposed to reward you? You’re adventurers, aren’t you? Accepting paid work without going through the guild is against its rules.”
“This isn’t a job. We’re simply helping you, so there’s no need to involve the guild.”
Tauro smiled reassuringly.
“Thank you! But perhaps you’ll say that now and demand my body as payment later! Kuh! Kill me!”
Ragune appeared to harbor an unusually strong distrust of men. Tauro laughed awkwardly, but she seemed entirely serious, so he decided to give her a formal guarantee.
“Aeris can use [Contract Magic]. I’ll promise to help without demanding payment, and we can bind the promise with a contract.”
“Very well, but I’ll keep the terms simple,” Aeris said.
She stepped between Tauro and Ragune, cast the spell, and had the two of them enter a contract stating that Tauro would provide his help free of charge.
“Now I can assist you without receiving anything in return,” Tauro said.
Only then did Ragune finally relax and nod.
“In that case, I place myself in your care.”
According to Ragune, the illness spreading through the dragonfolk village differed from ordinary diseases affecting humans. It was a deadly disease that appeared only rarely among dragonfolk.
Its symptoms included high fever, nausea, aching joints, inflammation and sores around the scales, progressive weakness, and eventually death.
Humans had no scales, so naturally no human disease produced inflammation in those areas.
“That makes this a very unusual illness…” Tauro murmured.
He removed several medicinal herbs from the stock stored in [Magic Storage]. Every one of them was rare and expensive.
“In addition to these, there’s one plant that has interested me for some time.”
He added a vivid red herb to the collection.
“Isn’t that Fire Dragon Grass?” Ragune asked. “It’s said to have no medicinal effect at all.”
“The description I can see identifies it as a medicinal herb that has no effect when used by itself.”
“Fire Dragon Grass is medicinal? This is the first I’ve heard of it.”
Ragune remained skeptical.
“I don’t know what combination it requires either, so I’ll try making a potion from these ingredients.”
Tauro took his potion-making tools out of [Magic Storage] and began experimenting on the spot.
While he worked, Aeris eagerly questioned Ragune about dragonfolk. Members of Ragune’s people were so rare that Aeris had no shortage of things she wanted to ask.
“Is it true that dragonfolk can transform into dragons?”
“That’s only a legend. We’re not so different from other humanoid races,” Ragune answered with a laugh, apparently accustomed to the question.
“Then what about the claim that dragonfolk possess unique abilities?”
“That depends on the individual. I possess [Dragon Knight].”
“That sounds amazing! What does it do?”
“It grants defenses approaching those of a heavily armored knight even while I wear light equipment. It also greatly improves agility and jumping ability, and allows me to breathe either fire or a freezing blizzard.”
“[Dragon Knight] really is powerful. Where did you come from, Ragune?”
“I come from the Dragon Forest in the north. It’s a great distance from here, but I have confidence in my legs, so I traveled here while gathering information.”
“The Dragon Forest? I’ve never heard of it.”
“That’s only the name we dragonfolk use. To outsiders, it’s simply somewhere within the Antas Mountains.”
Ragune remained deliberately vague about the exact location of her home. Perhaps she didn’t yet trust them enough to reveal it.
As the conversation continued, Tauro completed his work.
“It’s finished. Just as I hoped, [True Eye] confirms that this potion is effective against the symptoms you described.”
He handed the completed medicine to Ragune.
“I’ll teach you the preparation method so you can make more after returning to your village.”
Tauro then removed a large quantity of the expensive herbs from [Magic Storage] and gave them to her.
“This many? Thank you, Sir Tauro! Kuh! Kill me! Ah… forgive me. Saying that has become a habit.”
So it was merely a verbal habit.
Tauro was relieved to learn that Ragune’s alarming exclamation didn’t actually mean what it sounded like.
