Chapter 184: Trouble as Usual
When Tauro and Aeris arrived at the Adventurers’ Guild, they encountered a group of adventurers leaving the building.
At the front was Nasirus, leader of Jet-Black Swords and a man who regarded Tauro and Black-Gold Wings as rivals. Beside him were Iratuk, another knight, and Vichina, a redheaded tracker whose profession was an advanced branch of the thief path.
Ren and Yu—Rumeya’s and Shin’s girlfriends—followed behind them.
“That’s a troublesome combination again,” Aeris muttered.
Tauro was slightly taken aback by how bluntly she said it. Apparently, the five of them were about to undertake a quest together. They already seemed to be getting along, which was precisely what made the situation worrying.
“Let’s stay out of it,” Tauro said.
Aeris appeared to share his opinion.
“Well, if it isn’t the leader of Black-Gold Wings!” Nasirus called. Brushing his golden bangs aside, he immediately approached them. “While you were away from Dansas Village for several months, Jet-Black Swords advanced to E rank. It won’t be long before we surpass you!”
Nasirus had been provoking Tauro ever since Jet-Black Swords arrived in the village, so Tauro had learned to let the boasting pass without reacting.
“Congratulations.”
Tauro started into the guild with Aeris, but Iratuk hurriedly stopped them.
“Wait! I heard you threw these two women out of the Black-Gold Wings base while you were away. As a fellow front-line fighter, I can’t overlook such conduct!”
He sounded as though he had been waiting for an opportunity to say it.
“Exactly!” Vichina added. “They drove two women—the girlfriends of their own companions—out of the house where they had been living, simply because it suited them!”
Behind the three members of Jet-Black Swords, Ren and Yu sniffled theatrically and presented themselves as innocent victims.
So that was the version of events they had told them.
The accusation was based loosely enough on the truth that Tauro didn’t particularly feel like arguing. However, other adventurers inside the guild were listening, and remaining silent might cause a serious misunderstanding.
“Yu and Ren were only allowed to use our base while Aeris and I were away,” Tauro explained. “We returned, so I asked them to move out. That’s all. I won’t ask why you heard only their version, but interfering in another team’s affairs after listening to one side of the story is hardly admirable.”
“That’s right,” Aeris said. “They used the Black-Gold Wings base, name, and emblem without permission from Tauro, the team leader. That should make it obvious who was in the wrong. Shin and Rumeya do share some blame for failing to correct them sooner, though.”
Tauro’s explanation and Aeris’s follow-up left Jet-Black Swords with nothing to say. Ren and Yu appeared offended at having their conduct described so plainly, but neither attempted to deny it.
“It seems the entire matter was merely a misunderstanding,” Nasirus eventually declared, interpreting the situation in the manner most favorable to himself. “In that case, we won’t hold it against you.”
He then glanced silently at Yu and Ren, who avoided his eyes.
“Good luck with your quest,” Tauro said before walking into the guild with Aeris.
The moment they entered, the adventurers inside began murmuring among themselves. They had clearly heard the entire exchange.
“I apologize for the disturbance,” Tauro said, bowing to the room. “Black-Gold Wings will resume its activities today. I hope we can continue to count on everyone’s support.”
Aeris hurriedly bowed beside him.
“Welcome back! I thought you’d left the team!”
“So did I!”
“You ran into trouble the moment you returned! Hahaha!”
“Wasn’t there a rumor that they fled to another country?”
“Idiot, that was something someone invented while drunk!”
“I heard they slipped away in the middle of the night.”
“That came from Lying Saw. You should know better than to believe him!”
Apparently, Tauro’s absence had turned him into a convenient subject for the guild’s jokes and rumors.
They had left in such a hurry that he couldn’t have predicted this outcome, but he was still somewhat dismayed that Shin and Rumeya had allowed matters to become so confused.
That also made him wonder what had happened to the letters he had sent them from time to time. Had they actually managed to read any of them?
