Chapter 23 A Bad Premonition

"Was Albert really there?"

"What's the point of lying?"

Responding to the uneasy voice of Fimia, I move towards the direction where the figure disappeared. While there's a possibility of a mistaken sighting, I believe that messy black hair belongs to him.

"Has he been in the unexplored area since he disappeared a while ago?"

"Do you think he has the perseverance for that?"

Albert is a loud guy and not the type to lurk in a place like this. Moreover, I don't think he would survive. Something is off. My instincts tell me that this kind of discomfort is something to be cautious about.

"Stop."

I stop and halt the two of them. When there's a bad feeling, especially when 'impossible things' happen, you need to be careful. This is an unexplored area, in other words, a dungeon. Anything can happen, and careful attention is needed to survive.

"Let's turn back. Rolo, Fimia."

"What about Albert?"

"Even if it was him, there's no reason to pursue further. Whatever he was doing here is unrelated to us."

At first glance, it might seem like a cold opinion. However, he's a former comrade from 'Silhasta,' not a comrade of 'Mercia,' and not even an adventurer who came to the new city. If anything, he's a suspicious person who disappeared.

"I think that's a good idea. It feels like we're being led further into the depths."

"Yeah, whether it's Albert or not... we shouldn't pursue further. Let's go back and report to Saran."

"That's right."

While it might be embarrassing after making a big fuss, it's indeed something to consider. We can't afford to take any more risks. It would be foolish to search around for that idiot in a place where we might encounter the scarred beast.

"Let's postpone the quest for the Unicorn Almirage to tomorrow. Rolo, I'll rely on your vigilance. Let's return by the shortest route."

"Yeah. Fimia, make sure to stick close."

"Yes. Understood."

While Rolo and I remain vigilant in the surroundings, we head back along the creek. I can sense some presence behind, but it's quite distant. Whether it belongs to a monster or Albert, I don't know, but the unpleasant feeling is strong. This is a matter that requires the opinion of a wise person.

After walking for a while, human presence becomes more apparent. It seems the requests I distributed are working well. With so many adventurers wandering around, monsters would probably hesitate to approach.

"All right, we made it back. Ugh... I felt like I was being watched the whole time."

"... It's a bit similar to that day, isn't it?"

"Yeah. It's an uncomfortable feeling."

"I'm a bit disappointed that I don't understand."

We nod at each other, Rolo and I, while Fimia furrows her brow behind us. I think it's better if she doesn't understand.

"I see. There are no other sighting reports... but if you two say you saw him, you probably did."

"We don't have any confirmation. We only saw his back."

"Yeah. And... it felt strange."

Listening to our story, Saran narrows his eyes and enters a thoughtful posture. Then, he immediately sighs.

"It's no good; there's too little information."

"Yeah, that's true. So, we want to discuss the plan. Whether we should search for Albert or not."

"It's not necessary... and yet, I can't deny that it bothers me."

"What are your opinions?"

Surprised expressions appear on Rolo and Fimia's faces when they are asked for their opinions. In fact, I'm surprised too. That scheming eyeglasses that usually decides everything is seeking the opinions of others.

"I think it's better not to. It feels somewhat eerie."

"I agree with Fimia. It's not just our opinion; something feels wrong."

"In truth, I also agree with Fimia."

Just as Rolo and I sense something, the two mages seem to be feeling something about this phenomenon. It's a feeling that is difficult to put into words, but we can understand each other.

"... Fimia, can you do me a favor?"

"Is it 'Revelation'?"

In response to Fimia's question, Saran nods.

"Revelation" is one of the advanced sacred magics... and it's also one of the powers that makes Fimia a "saint."

"Understood. I will purify myself now and come to stand by your bedside in your dreams."

"I'm sorry. It's inappropriate to use the grace of the gods lightly."

"No, I also believe it is necessary."

Fimia nods and turns to me and Rolo.

"Is there a place around here where bathing is possible?"

"Yeah, there's a spring a little away from the village. Rolo, take her there."

"Me?"

Who else is there besides you? Bathing means exposing the skin, and you are the most suitable for the job.

"Jurg, please go with them."

"Huh? Why?"

"There is no difference in the fact that an unforeseen situation has occurred. We need to increase Fimia's protection."

Saran's words have convincing power. Certainly, if that was Albert, it could be troublesome. I don't think Rolo will fall behind, but there's always the possibility of something unexpected happening.

"Is it okay with you, Fimia?"

"It's a bit late to ask. I can overlook some things."

"All right, I'll handle the vigilance in the vicinity. Rolo, stick with Fimia."

"Yeah. Got it."

The four of us nod at each other and leave the building serving as the command center. Saran seems to have some business with the receptionist, Kati, as he left separately. We cross the village and exit through the arch.

"The spring is this way. Watch your step."

"Yes. Thank you."

Escorted by Rolo, Fimia proceeds along the gravel road. I follow slowly, keeping a close watch on the surroundings.
