Chapter 21: Troubles and Troubles

Rolo's optimism and Saran's plan hit the mark perfectly. Within a week of the announcement, the new city of Malhas was bustling with adventurers.

"Alright, the registration for pioneer adventurers is here!"

A familiar guild staff member was guiding those adventurers. Well, since she was a staff member from the dairy farming city of Hilte, it wasn't surprising to see her here, but it was a bit surprising to encounter someone familiar.

"Hey, do we need to register too?"

"Oh, Jurg-san! Members of 'Mercia' are already registered, so you're fine!"

"I see. Still, never thought I'd see you here."

In response to my words, the receptionist lady smiled proudly. Even though she was sent to this remote pioneer village, she seemed quite happy about it.

"I volunteered! I'm a fan of everyone here."

"Well, you're rushing it. What if something goes wrong and you end up dead?"

"It's the same anywhere. I've also heard about the circumstances regarding Malhas's secretary when I applied for the job."

Risking career advancement. Indeed, the staff at the Adventurer's Guild had strong nerves. Well, they had to be that way to survive in a place like this.

"By the way, I didn't catch your name."

"It's Kati! Kati Grinbel. Thanks for your continued support, Jurg-san."

I shook hands with the smiling Kati. Hmm, now that I look closely, she's quite beautiful, isn't she? The eyes behind the glasses are well-shaped, and the green eyes are a bit mysterious. The light chestnut hair, braided for easy movement, suits her well.

"Is something wrong?"

"No, I just realized you're more beautiful than I thought. I just appreciated the view."

To my words, Kati looked surprised and then blushed. Oh, she's a country girl in that aspect.

"You're good at this! Please don't tease me too much."

"Well, I think you're busy, but if anything comes up, let me know. I'll help as an apology."

Waving my hand, I left the scene. There's no point in interfering with her work any further.

"Jurg, are you here?"

"Yeah. What's up?"

"You seems to be quite free seeing how you’re looking at the receptionist. It's time for work."

"What, were you watching me? So, what's the job?"

Saran handed me several parchment papers. Looking closely, they contained information about some of the monsters I had investigated in the unexplored areas before.

"Please allocate suitable jobs to the gathered adventurers."

"Huh? They're adventurers; they decide what jobs to take."

Adventurers are individuals who turn risks into money with their own abilities. They're free to choose their jobs, and whatever happens is their responsibility. This kind of thing is the Adventurer's Guild's job. It should be given to Kati, not me.

"Do it your way, okay? If the jobs I handed out today are accepted, and results are achieved within a few days, it'll be fine."

"Hey, they just arrived, you know? They haven't even conducted a local survey. You're making them work already?"

"That's why I'm using you, right?"

Saran pointed to the stack of papers. Taking a closer look, it was a specially designed request form with surrounding maps included.

"When adventurers arrive, next, we'll need their results. I chose relatively safe tasks for the handed-out requests. As adventurers start to move actively when money starts circulating, the safety and importance of this village will increase."

Saran's sharp gaze was directed towards the new city and the forest beyond. This is the vision he, who works tirelessly, is drawing. Probably, this is the best move.

"Oh, fine. I get it."

"Thank you."

Grudgingly nodding, I watched Saran walk away with a slight upward tilt of his lips. Truly, he's good at using people like me.

"Jurg, is something wrong?"

Scratching my head vigorously as I walked, Fimia approached me this time. Not in her adventurer attire, the 'Saint' was wearing a brown country dress, giving off a slightly rustic vibe. Well, it matches Malhas. I can understand that if Rolo were to settle down, it might be something like this.

"Saran pushed some trouble onto me. Oh well, he's a genius at using people."

"He is the son of a civilian noble, after all."

With a sigh from me, Fimia chuckled. In this situation, she doesn't look like just a village girl.

"I'm doing food inspection for the supplies that arrived from the dairy farming city of Hilte. Since we might need 'Preservation' and 'Antidote' spells, you see."

"They shouldn’t make the 'Saint' do odd jobs; it's too disrespectful."

"Oh, I quite enjoy this kind of thing. It makes me feel like I'm living a real life."

"Well, it's different from the adventurer's life. But I'm relieved that you're getting along well with the villagers."

I couldn't help but feel a bit envious of Fimia, who had completely blended into Malhas. I, on the other hand, still faced avoidance and whispers whenever I went out. Well, there's no helping it. I'm not the person who should be here in the first place.

"I've heard your bad reputation many times."

"I'm sure. If someone brings it up again, tell them, 'It'll disappear if they work moderately, so be patient for now.'"

"Huh? Disappear?"

Fimia grabbed my sleeve with a slightly surprised expression.

"Are you going somewhere? Alone?"

"That's the plan. Like you heard, 'Evil Brats' are a type of monsters detested in this village. Some people have had painful experiences, and others have had even scarier ones."

"But you're working hard now, aren't you?"

"It's like atonement and repaying a debt. I owe a lot to Rolo's family."

While still holding onto my sleeve, Fimia lowered her head slightly.

If you pull too much, it might stretch. Also, if Roro sees us like this, it might not end well.

"No, I can't let you."

"Huh?"

"You can't go somewhere. Not alone."

"Hey, did you listen to what I said, Fimia?"

Shaking her head vigorously, the 'Saint' seemed lost, and I had no choice but to look around for help. Someone, please save me.

"Huh? Jurg and... Fimia?"

See, I got caught by the person I shouldn't have been found by.
