Chapter 27: Waste of Talent << Grayson’s POV >>
I had finished all my classes for the day and was working with Miss Charlotte on the committee activities after school.
As we had done this morning, we were assigned to patrol the botanical garden, and we made our way through the weedy paths and around the greenhouses in a circle.
Unlike early in the morning, there were so many students on sight, and the scene was peaceful.
With so many eyes, no thief will appear.
But I couldn’t let my guard down.
I put my hand in a position where I can draw my sword at any time while keeping an eye on my surroundings.
I glanced at the students collecting herbs in the greenhouse and suddenly noticed something strange.
” ──── There was no sound of footsteps behind me…?”
I can’t hear the footsteps of Miss Charlotte, who should be walking behind me, and I tilt my head.
I’m not worried about her because I can sense her presence.
Did she use some kind of magic to muffle the sound?
While thinking that, looking back, I see Miss Charlotte sitting on a blazer instead of a chair.
Perhaps she carved a floating magic circle on her blazer, her coat floated in the air and stuck right behind me.
This is not a magic carpet, but a magic blazer.
So this is what it comes down to… It is true that if you are as talented as she is, it is easier to make a magic carpet than to build up your physical strength.
But let me just say this.
“────You’re wasting your talent.”
With a deep sigh, “Hah…” I am amazed at Miss Charlotte, who was trying to start reading gracefully.
I honestly thought that forming a magic circle instantly and using a blazer as a magic carpet is “awesome”, but the usage of skill was completely wrong.
Miss Charlotte, who was wearing a shirt, shook her shoulders at my muttering and looked at me in horror, truly horrified…
The purple-haired beauty paled quickly at the little trick that had been exposed in just a few minutes.
“Yeah, no…! Um, this is…! Oh, it’s an experiment in new magic…! It’s not like I used it because I didn’t want to walk…!”
When I saw Miss Charlotte waving her hands in front of her chest and desperately trying to explain herself, I was convinced that she didn’t want to walk.
I knew that she didn’t have much energy this morning, so I wasn’t too surprised.
It is indeed a bad idea to start reading.
“I’m not going to scold you, don’t worry. As long as it doesn’t interfere with your patrol, it’s fine. However, reading is prohibited.”
“Yes sir…!”
The purple-haired beauty saluted and nodded before muttering “Open the Gate” and throwing the book into a distorted space.
The title of the book, which I caught a glimpse of, read, “On the Deep Psychology of Man and the Definition of Love.”
It looks like a very dark book…
Does Miss Charlotte always read this kind of stuff?
No, more importantly
“──── You can use subspace storage?”
As the name suggests, subspace storage allows you to create your own space and store things there.
Only people with an aptitude for spatial attributes can use it, and since it consumes a lot of magical power, there are extremely few people who can use it.
At least it wasn’t something for just getting rid of the baggage that got in the way.
It’s always been the case that Miss Charlotte is out of this world, but I didn’t realize she could use subspace storage as well,
I’m not sure if “genius” is a word that fits anyone as well as it does her.
“Even so, to make something like this and take less than a day.”
I muttered impressed, as the purple-haired beauty dyed her cheeks slightly red.
She looked shy and distracted, she was messy and cute.
“I had already made a basic magic circle,” she said. “It’s just a slightly modified version of the transporting magic that my parents use at home.”
“I see. It’s the same in terms of transporting things. What did you use that magic circle for at home? From the way you talk about it, it sounds like you’ve been using it for years.”
“You’re right. I used it to carry textbooks for lectures and to carry books in my study. I also used it when I was cleaning up my room ──── Oh, no! It’s nothing! Please forget about it!”
Miss Charlotte, whose voice became raspy as if rushed, laughed dryly while saying, “Hahahaha…”
She tried to disguise her rant, but it was too late…
Miss Charlotte even cleaned up magically …
It makes sense that she lacks physical strength.
I’m sure she used magic every time something happened to make it easier.
I think “Clean it up with your own hands”, but I have no choice but to take off my hat for her ideas and creativity to devise new magic immediately.
I was impressed with the way she used her talents.
────Suddenly, a person jumped out of the bushes on the side of the school building.
My attention turned to that and leaning forward with my hand on the hilt of the sword.
The reflection in my dark eyes was not the plant thief or Silas sensei ──── but a classmate of ours.
“──── Daniel Evan Collins, what do you want from us? You didn’t come to visit the botanical garden, did you?”
I asked, staring at the dark blue-haired man who didn’t seem to be the least bit interested in plants.
Although the probability is extremely low, it’s possible that I just happened to run into him, so I prioritized fact-finding first.
If he wanted to leave like this, fine.
However, if he had some reason to challenge us, we would have to deal with him as members of the disciplinary committee.
Well, judging from the way he looks, I can guess what he’s going to do…
“I’m sorry, but I have no business with His Highness Grayson. ──── I’m here for the girl. “
With that said, Daniel turned to Miss Charlotte, who popped out from behind me.
The purple-haired beauty, who sensed a hint of trouble, got down from her blazer with a look of disgust on her face.
She then undid the spell on her jacket and put it back on.
“I have a pretty good idea of what to expect, but just in case, let me ask you a question. What does the second son of the Collins family have to do with this daughter of a humble Viscount?”
Miss Charlotte jumped out in front of me, with her legs in the bushes, facing the man with dark hair head-on.
Laughing dryly “Haha!”, Daniel said to her:
“What do I want? That’s obvious! It’s that you, a lowly Viscountess, beat me in a mock battle!. You used underhanded magic to trick me…! Apologize to me right now! And then publicly say that you used a cowardly trick to win!”
The dark blue-haired man pointed at Miss Charlotte with a stern look on his face, both eyes lifted.
I sigh away while thinking “is that all?”
I can understand the frustration and embarrassment of losing to an amateur who has never even held a sword before, but asking for an apology is obviously not right.
As Nigel sensei said, it was his fault for being careless.
To blame his opponent for his own mistakes was not only unjust, but it was also unethical…
“You say she used underhanded tactics, but where is the underhandedness in that? I don’t think Miss Charlotte was breaking any rules…”
I couldn’t keep quiet about his unreasonable argument and interrupted him from the side.
I understand that I shouldn’t interfere in their problems, but I thought she would apologize because it was a pain in the ass.
Even though Miss Charlotte understands that it’s not her fault, she tends to follow the will of the other party to avoid trouble.
The fact that she had been at the mercy of her sister for so long was a good example.
I don’t want to see talented people being trampled down by incompetent people.
More than anything, I didn’t want her to lose the nobility she showed when she declared that she was going to stop playing second fiddle to her sister.
Recalling the radiant expression and dignified eyes of Miss Charlotte, who still clings to my mind, I look straight at Daniel.
This was the first time I had ever wanted to protect someone in particular ──── not some random person.
“This woman used magic even though it was a sword fight! Even though it’s a mock battle, it’s a serious battle and this is…!”
“I thought Nigel sensei said it was okay to use magic as support?”
“Ugh…! But! If you’re a swordsman, shouldn’t you fight without relying on magic!?”
“It’s your personal opinion, right? It’s not right to impose it on others.”
I gave the correct and proper rebuttal to his argument, and he was defeated.
The man with dark blue hair, who could not find any words to reply, made a frustrated expression and clenched his fists tightly.
It seems I struck a nerve and he spoke with venom.
“I want to talk to the girl! As an outsider, Your Highness Grayson, please keep your mouth shut!”
The words he spewed in anguish were on the same level as a toddler’s and were unbearable to listen to.
But he does have a point, so I shut my mouth for now.
I was watching her movements, wondering what Miss Charlotte would do when my eyes met her tanzanite’s eyes.
Her eyes were like the sky, the sea, and the clear water.
The purple-haired beauty softened her eyes slightly and thanked me with a mouthing, ‘Thank you’.
Apparently, she had no intention of giving in to the unreasonable.
Maybe I didn’t need to interrupt him.
“──── I’m sorry, Daniel, but I have no intention of apologizing or making excuses. I did not do anything wrong.”
With a smile plastered on her face, Miss Charlotte refused Daniel’s request, and I didn’t feel any hesitation or uncertainty.
The dark blue-haired man flinched for a moment at the sight of her staring straight ahead.
However, he did not try to withdraw obediently, probably because the other person was in a weaker position than himself.
“You cocky woman…! I would have forgiven you if you had apologized right away, but you don’t seem to understand what I’m talking about! Fine! Then I’ll make you understand with your body!”
As soon as he said that, Daniel spread his hands and grinned.
“Flame Spear.”
Along with the chanting of intermediate magic, multiple spears in the shape of flames manifested.
Daniel’s sanity is doubted instinctively by the barbarism which should be called an outrage.
If he was a sane person, he would not have thought of using force here.
It’s a bad idea to use force to assault people, but using fire magic in the vicinity of the botanical garden is unthinkable.
It’s bad enough to light a fire, but he’s going to throw it here where a lot of weeds grow, It’s obvious that a fire would break out.
Many valuable plants are growing in the botanical garden.
If the fire were to spread to the greenhouse, it would be more than just a letter of apology can solve…
Is he using flame magic in anticipation of that?
Or is he doing this without thinking about anything…?
“Daniel, this is your first and last warning. Please break the spell now and surrender. We’ll let you off with just a warning.”
