Chapter 55 - Viscount Janssen's Territory

About 30 minutes had passed since they parted ways with the refugees, and finally, they could see the town of Badalona, which was at the border of the neighboring territory.

Since the attack and defense had begun in the middle of the night, there were no fires lit in the hearths. Seeing no flames from a distance was reassuring.

However, when they reached the gate, the expressions on the knights' faces changed.

It seemed they had stayed behind to ensure the safety of everyone heading to the mansion and back gate. The corpses of two guards, or what appeared to be guards, were abandoned at the side of the gate, covered in blood.

They wanted to pay their respects properly, but they couldn't afford to stop now. Suppressing their sorrow and anger, the group increased their pace and rushed through the gate.

As they entered the town, they spotted goblins and orcs scattered around. Some were even fighting over what seemed to be food taken from inside houses. It appeared that not all the monsters that entered the town were attacking the mansion.

"What should we do, Selfers-sama?"

"They're causing havoc as they please... I'd like to wipe them out, but that will have to wait. First, let's head to the magistrate's residence!"

"Ha!!!!!"

Gritting his teeth, Selfers gave the order.

"Miseroi!"

"Hai!"

Seeing everyone beginning to move, Selfers called out to Miseroi and tossed the sword from his waist.

"It's an enhanced one. There should be one or two ogres likely. Otherwise, the gate wouldn't have been damaged so much."

"Are you sure about this?"

"Oh, right. Didn't you promise the boy earlier? Make sure to finish things properly and share some interesting stories. He'll be delighted, you know?"

Selfers grinned at Miseroi’s confirmation.

“Understood!!”

Miseroi briefly widened his eyes but then smiled, drawing the sword and rushing towards the magistrate's residence.

After about a minute of running, they could see the magistrate's residence. As Selfers had expected, there was an ogre banging its club against the gate and roaring. Surrounding it were more than 50 goblins and orcs.

Considering the numerous monster corpses scattered around, there were likely over 100 of them.

They could see stone-throwing attacks from the defensive walls as they got closer. Seeing arrows lying around everywhere, it was clear that they had already run out of arrows. However, the gate still stood, defending against the monster invasion.

"Alert the guards! I'm Selfers Klaufeldt, the head of the Klaufeldt family! We came to aid our friend, Viscount Daffyd Janssen, who's in dire straits! We'll now exterminate the monsters in this town! Hold out just a little longer!"

Beside Diluc, who raised the Klaufeldt family flag, Selfers delivered his speech.

"Hoorah!"

And then the charge order was given.

"Uooh! It's the Knight Order! Klaufeldt-sama and the Knight Order came to our rescue!"

"Thank you!"

"Viscount-sama, thank you! We've already run out of arrows, and we're running low on stones... We couldn't be of any help..."

A man who appeared to be the magistrate offered words of relief and an apology.

"No, you've held out very well! Thanks to you, the women and children you let escape are safe. They're heading to Terney now, so you can rest assured."

While cutting down goblins, Selfers briefly explained the situation.

"Really? Are they safe...? That's such a relief... Thank goodness!"

Upon hearing that, sighs of relief spread from the defensive walls.

The knights formed pairs and continued to cut down the monsters from horseback. It was their third battle of the day, but the sharpness of the Felis Type 1 was still intact. Within 30 minutes, around half of the monsters had exposed their bodies.

As the situation somewhat calmed down, they heard the sound of numerous hooves approaching from the entrance of the town.

Looking at the flags being raised, Selfers let out a relieved breath.

"Well, it seems we've reached a stopping point..."

The ones who had arrived were the Janssen Territory's Knight Order, led by their lord, Daffyd.

Daffyd, seeing a familiar face in front of the magistrate's residence, opened his eyes for a moment and then gave orders.

"Squads 1 and 2, split into two groups and exterminate the remaining enemies in the town! Squad 3, patrol the area around the gate and the outer walls! Squad 4, follow me!"

“”"Ha!!!!"””

Upon receiving the orders, they dispersed smoothly, each moving like a well-trained entity.

Daffyd slowed down and approached Selfers.

"Hey, Daff. It's been about a week, hasn't it? How have you been?"

"Self... Did you come to help?"

In response to Selfers' casual greeting, Daffyd asked with few words.

"Yeah, we got an urgent report last night. It said a horde of monsters was heading towards our place. We hurried out and found the border town under attack. So, just to make sure, we sent out scouts, and we heard that Badalona was also under attack. We came to lend a hand."

Saying this, Selfers shrugged.

"I see... You came all this way for our town...Thank you, Self. Thank you so much!"

Upon hearing Selfers' words, Daffyd lowered his head slowly, his shoulders shaking.

"No, no, lift your head. You guys had enough time because we arrived just a while ago."

"Such things are merely hindsight. Whether early or late, there's no difference. You came to help our town. That's what matters and makes me happy."

Rubbing his eyes, Daffyd responded with a grin.

Then, cheers erupted from the magistrate's residence.

"Woah!"

"Incredible! Those two took down an ogre together!"

"What's with that knight? He sliced off an ogre's arm!"

In the direction of the cheers, Diluc and Miseroi had just finished off the ogre working together.

"Phew, is this everything sorted out?"

Having confirmed that, Selfers let out a long sigh, finally feeling the tension easing.

"Two people? That was Diluc and Miseroi... Can that be true...? Well, they did look quite weakened."

In contrast, Daffyd was tilting his head at the fact that two people managed to defeat an ogre.

"They seemed pretty worn out, you know. But rather than that, shall we start the cleanup quickly? If we get started now, we should be able to tidy up to some extent before it gets dark. It'd be quite a mess if more monsters are drawn here by the smell of blood from the ogres..."

Selfers subtly changed the topic.

However, what he said was indeed a fact. Many monsters were attracted by the scent of blood, so leaving it unattended might lead to secondary damage.

"Yeah, you're right. We also need to do some emergency repairs on the gate and the outer wall. Reynaldo!"

In response to Selfers' words, Daffyd lightly shook his head and called out to a man.

"Ha!"

The one who responded briefly was Reynaldo, the commander of Viscount Janssen’s Knight Order. He appeared to be around 40 years old, with a large and well-built physique.

"Divide the squads into three teams for post-processing. One team will handle the disposal of the bodies, one will eliminate any remaining enemies within the town while assessing the damage, and another will patrol the outskirts of the town to hunt down stragglers and check the damage there. Once you've given the orders, come to the magistrate's residence. We'll organize the situation up to this point."

"Ha!"

Reynaldo gave a silent salute to Selfers and then headed towards the main gate of the town to issue the instructions.

"Self, sorry for keeping you a bit longer. I want to get as much information as possible."

"Of course, we're just as clueless about the whole situation. We'll also send people from our side for post-processing. But, sorry, can we arrange a system where they take turns for breaks? Fatigue is starting to take a toll on them."

Selfers replied with a wry smile.

"No worries, I appreciate it."

"Don’t worry about it. Diluc! You were listening, right? Make sure they rest in shifts while working. For now, until sunset. Once you've given the instructions, please come to the magistrate's residence as well."

"Understood!"

After issuing instructions to Diluc, who had come close without notice, the two lords rode side by side towards the magistrate's residence.
