Chapter 69: Swordsmanship Class

The next class was separate from the one with the Rosemary sisters. Rest visited the grounds of the Knight Division to attend the "Swordsmanship" class.

Although Rest was a student of the Magic Division, he could take classes from other departments as elective subjects.

"Swordsmanship" was a class in the Knight Division, but it was relatively popular among students of the Magic Division.

"Next is a class that involves moving your body... I need to be careful not to get injured."

"Ugh, it's so bright... The sunlight is piercing my skin..."

As Rest, dressed in gym clothes, stepped onto the schoolyard, his newly made friend and classmate, Ruido Gistal, slouched wearily.

"We're aspiring magicians, right? So why do we have to do sword fighting?"

"Well, it's probably because it's a noble pastime, isn't it?"

Many students from the Magic Division chose to take "Swordsmanship" classes, including the Rosemary sisters, because they were nobles or heirs to noble families.

For noblemen, it was expected that they would wield swords to defend their territory and subjects in times of need. This old-fashioned notion was still prevalent in noble society, and many students from departments other than the Knight Division chose to take "Swordsmanship" classes.

About a hundred students had gathered on the grounds, half of whom were from the Knight Division, and the other half from other departments. Among the students from other departments, half were from the Magic Division, thirty percent from the Civil Servant Division, and twenty percent from the Priest Division. There were hardly any students from the Art Division, probably because injuring their fingers would hinder their activities, such as painting or playing musical instruments.

While most injuries could be healed by magic, there were still some activities that required delicate finger movements, such as painting or playing musical instruments, where injuries could affect performance.

"It's true... Why bother with swordsmanship when you can just shoot magic from behind?"

Another male student grumbled discontentedly from behind Ruido.

"You are... Louie-kun, was it?"

"Maurice is fine. Rest, the prospective son-in-law of the Rosemary family."

The one who pushed up his glasses and spoke was Rest's classmate, Maurice Louie.

Maurice had the appearance of a studious person, but on the contrary, his body was slender with little muscle. It was obvious that he wasn't good at sports.

"Swordsmanship is just a pastime for those who can't do magic, right? Isn't it lamentable that such a thing has become a noble pastime?"

"Hey, hey... That's going too far, isn't it?"

Rest hurriedly reprimanded Maurice.

Maurice's way of thinking was by no means a minority opinion.

Many magicians regarded weapons like swords and spears as inferior tools used by ordinary people who couldn't perform magic. Of course, this was a view that aspiring knights and warriors found hard to accept.

In fact, the legitimate heir of the Rosemary Marquis family, Iris Rosemary, was skilled in bare-handed combat. Dible, a former court magician, was also a martial artist. Just because they were magicians didn't mean they didn't need martial arts.

"Well... I think it's wise to be prepared for close combat situations, even for magicians. It depends on the situation, you know? It doesn't hurt to be able to do both."

The atmosphere became tense as students from the Knight Division, who were a little further away, glared at Maurice.

"Hmm... Is that so? Well, I guess there are people who think like that."

Maurice snorted uninterestedly.

It seemed that Maurice was a magic fundamentalist—an individual who believed that magicians were superior to others. In a sense, it was a respectable viewpoint for a student of the Magic Division, and not particularly unusual.

"Oops, what's wrong? It feels awfully tense here."

"Yuri."

Yuri Catreya appeared on the grounds.

Yuri was smiling under the sun, her ample bosom pushing up the gym clothes she was wearing, revealing her navel.

Even though she had changed into gym clothes, it seemed they were a size too small for her.

As a result, it was apparent that she had a slim figure... Not that it mattered.

"What's wrong, Yuri? You seem unusually cheerful."

"That's because I'm in high spirits! It's finally time for the long-awaited swordsmanship class!"

Yuri clenched her fists in both hands and replied.

"I've always wanted to learn swordsmanship... But my father wouldn't allow it due to his policies! So, I've been really looking forward to today!"

"I see... I'm glad for you."

The Catreya Marquis family was a prestigious knightly lineage.

It made one wonder why Yuri, who seemed to be the daughter of such a family, had run away. It was a matter of curiosity once again.

"Maurice, why don't you give it your best shot too? It doesn't matter if you're from the Magic Division or the Knight Division. If you're going to do it, give it your all!"

"Uh... I guess... Y-yeah..."

Maurice averted his gaze from Yuri's gym clothes and reluctantly agreed.

"Let's start the class! Gather over here!"

The instructor called out.

It seemed to be the start of the class.

Rest and the others ran over and gathered in the center of the grounds.
