Chapter 375: The Journey Home Through the Sky

And thus, the battle with the foreign tribes came to an end.

No formal truce or peace treaty had been signed, but an emissary from the tribes declared that they would never again launch an attack.

It was, of course, only a verbal promise — but after losing so many warriors in this conflict, they would need at least ten years to raise new ones. Until then, there was little chance of another invasion.

“Excellent work, Count Clover. Without a doubt, you were the greatest contributor to this victory. You’ve done well.”

At the fortress, Valeya Catreya said this solemnly upon their return.

“No, I only did what was expected of me.”

“In due time, you’ll receive the reward you deserve… but first, there’s something else that must be done.”

“The Geisel Empire… right?”

There was still no definitive proof, but the shadow of the Geisel Empire loomed behind the foreign tribes’ assault. Reports were coming in of suspicious movements along the eastern border — even after repelling the invaders, the situation was far from settled.

“Count Clover, return to the capital immediately and report everything that happened here. After that, follow His Majesty’s instructions.”

“Understood.”

It might have seemed a bit sudden, but Valeya clearly viewed the situation as grave enough to warrant such urgency.

“We’ll head back once the cleanup is complete. I’ll see you in the capital.”

“Yes… then, if you’ll excuse me.”

Rest offered a brief bow before leaving the fortress and soaring into the sky with magic.

He manipulated the wind around him and flew southward — toward the royal capital.

The battle was not yet over.

He already knew that the “Sorcerer” was a member of Takufīl Kahen, a secret organization hostile to the Council of Sages.

Rest didn’t yet understand their true objective — but judging from the Sorcerer’s words, it was certainly nothing good.

(I have to get back to the capital as soon as possible… and figure out a countermeasure.)

After reporting to the king, what then?
The academy headmaster was supposedly a member of the Council of Sages, known by the title “Satellite.”

If he could talk to him, perhaps he’d learn more about their motives.

“Better pick up the pace…!”

He pushed wind behind him to accelerate. The scenery below blurred into streaks as he sped through the air.

If he didn’t maintain magic protection around his body, the pressure alone might have crushed him.

The journey that would have taken days on foot was drastically shortened by flight.

“GYAAAAAAHHHHHHH!”

“…Huh?”

Even so, it wasn’t a completely safe trip.

A massive shadow suddenly swooped toward him — a gigantic bird, over three meters long, as big as an elephant, slashing at him with razor-sharp talons.

“What a nuisance… Out of my way!”

“Gyaaah!?”

He hurled a Lightning Orb, stunning the creature.

Using the opening, Rest darted past — but the beast quickly recovered and gave chase, flapping its enormous wings and snapping its beak.

“Good grief… I’m in a hurry, you idiot bird.”

He hadn’t planned to fight, just to drive it off — but the creature, perhaps starving, pursued him relentlessly, drooling as it flew.

With a sigh, Rest stopped in midair and raised his hand.

“If you’re that hungry, then eat this!”

“Ggyuh!?”

He conjured a mass of earth and shoved it into the bird’s gaping mouth.

It tried desperately to close its beak — but Rest didn’t stop, pouring more and more dirt inside.

“Guh… guhphhh…”

“There… that’s enough! Bon appétit.”

The bird’s belly swelled grotesquely until, unable to stay aloft, it plummeted into the forest below.

After confirming that his pursuer was gone, Rest resumed his flight toward the capital.

“I can see it…!”

Soon, the capital came into view.

He flew over the familiar cityscape and landed directly in the royal palace gardens.

“Who goes there!?”

“An intruder!?”

Startled guards rushed toward him, weapons drawn.

“Oh… right.”

He’d been in such a hurry that he forgot — entering without using the gates naturally made him look suspicious.

As the soldiers surrounded him, Rest raised his hands awkwardly.

“Um, I’m—”

“Rest!”

“Rest-sama!”

Before he could explain, two familiar voices called out, cutting through the tension.

Pushing past the soldiers, two women ran toward him.

“Welcome home, Rest!”

“Thank goodness… You’re safe, Rest-sama!”

“Viola, Primula…!”

They were the two young noblewomen who had changed his life — his fiancées, Viola Rosemary and Primula Rosemary.

Ignoring the watching soldiers, the two threw their arms around him.

“I’m home… both of you… I’m home!”

Overcome with emotion, Rest embraced them back, while the dumbfounded guards looked on in silence.
