Chapter 374: Farewell, Foreign Tribe

Rest soared through the sky with magic, looking down at the ruined remains of what had once been the sand castle.

“Yeah… there’s no way he survived that. Probably.”

The massive structure had collapsed inward, crushed by the torrents of water that had burst from within.
It looked like a sandcastle washed away by waves on a beach. Rest narrowed his eyes at the sight.

At the moment he unleashed [Water Deity], he had escaped upward through the hole he’d made in the ceiling.
Tens of tons of water had exploded outward, destroying the “sorcerer’s” sand castle completely.

There was no sign of the sorcerer. He’d likely been crushed—or drowned—to death.

“…It shouldn’t have been possible to dodge that timing, but… nothing’s ever absolute. He might still be alive.”

If the man had covered himself with sand for protection, or burrowed into the ground afterward, then survival wasn’t entirely impossible.
There was no way to confirm it—his Presence Detection spell found nothing. Searching was pointless.

“Well, for now… I’ll take this as my win, right?”

“Rest-sama! Over here!”

“…Looks like everyone’s safe.”

A little distance from the collapsed castle, Dible called out.
By his side stood Valeya, Lübase, and several other soldiers. For some reason, a few oni warriors were there as well.

Before destroying the sand fortress, Rest had used the spell [Telepathy] to warn them to evacuate.
That spell wasn’t even listed in the public magic compendium—it was a state secret taught only to a handful of royal court mages.
Rest had learned it as a special privilege, thanks to the royal family’s trust.

“Is everyone unharmed?”

“Yes, somehow. What about the ‘sorcerer’? Did you take him down?”

Valeya asked as Rest landed on the ground.

“I managed to defeat him… but I can’t confirm the kill.”

“Well, considering the state of this place, that’s no surprise.”

Valeya sighed as she looked toward the ruins.

“What a terrifying spell. That one blow alone could flatten an entire fortress.”

“Perhaps… though I’ve never tested it.”

“It seems my sister’s judgment of you was sound. That’s somewhat reassuring.”

Valeya’s gaze toward Rest softened a little.
Apparently, he now recognized him—at least a bit—as a worthy match for his sister, Yuri.
Recognition or not, the result wouldn’t change, but the easing of tension was still a relief.

“So… what now? Do you still intend to fight us?”

Valeya turned her eyes sideways.
A short distance away stood the oni tribe, guarding the rescued children behind them.
Among them was Rou, standing beside his white-haired little sister.

“We rescued the children held hostage by that so-called sorcerer. It’s your turn to show good faith, don’t you think?”

“You needn’t tell us.”

One of the oni—a towering man over two meters tall—spoke solemnly.

“From this moment, our battle with you is over. In the name of our clan’s honor, we will prevent the other tribes from attacking as well.”

“You swear to that?”

“Enough. I swear it upon the name of our ancestor—the Oni God Byakudan.”

The oni warrior placed a fist over his heart and declared proudly.
Rest didn’t know what the gesture or words meant,
but the sincerity in the man’s voice was unmistakable.

“As for your intrusion into our forest… we will overlook it this time. Leave this place at once.”

“Gladly. Everyone, we’re pulling out.”

The matter with the oni tribe was settled.
It wasn’t certain they could be trusted completely, but the other side didn’t seem to have the strength left to pursue anyway.
They wouldn’t be chasing anyone now.

“Wait.”

Just then, one figure stepped forward—the white-haired girl who had been one of the hostages.

“You there… my brother told me about you. You’re called Rest-sama, aren’t you?”

“That’s right. Do you need something?”

Apparently, she did.
Rest approached her cautiously.

“I am Sara of the White Oni. You have my deepest gratitude.”

Introducing herself as Sara, the girl took Rest’s hand—and suddenly brought his thumb to her lips.

Her small mouth closed around his finger, and her tongue brushed it softly in an almost bewitching way.

“Sara!?”

“Hey! What do you think you’re doing!?”

Rou and the large oni man both shouted.

Sara released his finger and looked up at Rest with an innocent yet oddly mature smile.

“We will meet again.”

“Ah… yes. I suppose we will.”

For some reason, Rest answered politely.
The bob-haired girl’s unexpectedly adult expression had startled him for a moment.

“Retreat! Return to the fortress immediately!”

Valeya gave the order, and the strike team began making their way out of the jungle.

Though the ending had gotten a bit strange…
Rest and his companions had safely completed their mission—and thus returned home.
