Chapter 36: Cedric Struggles with the Written Exam

Cedric Ebern has been praised as a magic genius since his early childhood. He possessed significantly more magic power than other boys and girls of his age, had a good memory for magic, and was doted upon by his parents, who believed he would undoubtedly become a court mage.

However, being overly pampered from a young age resulted in him growing up as a selfish individual without knowing how to care for others. Nevertheless, his magic talent was undeniably genuine. His self-esteem was further fueled by the fact that his half-brother of the same age had no magic power. In the midst of abusing his brother due to his father's disdain for the incompetent son and his mother's resentment towards the child of an affair, Cedric lost any hesitation to hurt others.

If Cedric had indeed become a court mage and obtained the title of viscount, an arrogant and wicked aristocrat would have been born, causing inconvenience to many. However, it seems that there is such a thing as divine judgment in the world. On that day, a judgment was about to be passed on Cedric.

(Damn it! Damn it all! Why is this so difficult!)

Royal Academy, entrance exam day. In the auditorium, Cedric Ebern, facing the written exam questions, was inwardly cursing.

The spacious hall was filled with many children of nobles, all gathered to take the exam. Today was the exam for the noble class.

The people around him all had a good appearance, exuding an atmosphere of good upbringing. There were both newly rising nobles like Cedric and the offspring of clearly distinguished upper-class nobles.

(Damn it... I'm sure this question was in the reference book... Ah, damn it! I can't remember!)

The sound of pens around him fueled Cedric's impatience. However, no matter how impatient he became, it wouldn't make the questions any easier.

The answer sheet on his desk was almost half blank, and the time for the exam to end was approaching.

(For a magic genius like me to struggle like this... It's all because of that incompetent failure! He was taken in by the Marquis's family, and I couldn't concentrate on my studies...!)

In Cedric's mind appeared the face of his half-brother, Rest. Since childhood, Cedric had frequently used Rest as a test subject for his new magic or, if he was stressed, as a means of stress relief, even abusing him when something unpleasant happened.

Originally, Cedric had talent in magic, but he wasn't good at subjects other than magic, such as history and mathematics. After Rest was taken in by the Marquis's family a year ago, Cedric lost his routine of relieving stress by tormenting his brother. Since then, he couldn't concentrate on his studies, leading to him attempting the entrance exam unprepared.

(Why was that scumbag taken in by the marquis family? He's probably being made to do some lowly work... just thinking about that failure being near Viola and Primula makes me irritated beyond measure!)

Cedric had met the Marquis's sisters some time ago and had taken a liking to them at first sight. He had dreamed of making one, or ideally both, of the beautiful sisters his wife in the future. He loved them as they were beautiful as flowers.

However, since the incident where he led the sisters into the forest and exposed them to danger, he hadn't faced them again. Even when he requested to meet them to apologize, his request was flatly rejected.

"If you enroll in the academy, you+ might meet them again. Don't rush," his parents said.

"That's right. You're a chosen one, different from that stray dog. If you show them your good side, they'll surely come to like you," they reassured him.

However, even with their reassuring words, just thinking that Rest was so close to the lovely sisters stirred up irritation in Cedric. Since then, he couldn't concentrate on his studies. Even during the moment of taking the exam, the face of his brother flashed in his mind, and an intense feeling of anger continued to boil.

"You have five minutes left until the end of the exam."

"...!"

(Damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it!)

Upon hearing the exam proctor's voice, Cedric contorted his expression and desperately tried to solve the problems.

In the end, Cedric was only able to answer about seventy percent of the entire exam paper properly. There was no guarantee that all of that seventy percent was correct.

It had been mentioned beforehand that the minimum passing line for the written exam was getting over sixty percent correct. Cedric had barely crossed this line, making the first half of the exam extremely precarious.
