Chapter 34: All licenses were transferred

One year had passed.

Rest dedicated himself to exam preparation for school admission. He went through reference books multiple times, not only seeking help from the sisters but also conducting research in the library for areas he didn't understand. Simultaneously, he engaged in daily sparring with the butler, Dibble.

He had already mastered most of the magic that Dibble was proficient in. Viola and Primula occasionally joined the training, and even Lady Eilish would join in, making it a game of cat and mouse. Accumulating sufficient practical experience, Rest had reached a point where he could win against Dibble every other time, though he was still not adept in martial arts, he had surpassed Dibble in simple magic skills.

I was given the stamp of approval that I would be able to succeed even if I became a court magician right away.

"With the current Rest-dono, passing the entrance exam should be no problem. However... beware when things are going well. Don't let your guard down when you have the luxury to."

Rest's muttering was drowned out by a scream. Several grotesque humanoid figures emerged from the forest, their ashen skin, smooth bald heads, and bodies swollen like balloons covered with thick muscular armor.

They were not human; they were monsters known as Ogres.

Ogres, emerging one after another from the forest, let out fierce roars as they charged towards Rest, who was ready for them.

"Shall we fight?"

Fully prepared and with motivated adversaries, there was no reason to wait. Rest activated his magic and kicked off the ground.

"[Physical Boost] and [Accelerator]!"

Enhancing his physical abilities and simultaneously increasing his speed, Rest ran at an incredible speed, closing in on the leading Ogre.

"Guwaaah!?"

"[Wind Blade]!"

Launching wind blades at point-blank range, Rest severed the Ogre's head, making it dance through the air.

Witnessing the demise of their comrade, another Ogre swung a club down.

"Gaaah!"

"[Earth Shield]!"

Without panicking, Rest activated his magic. A wall of earth surged up and intercepted the club swung by the Ogre.

"[Earth Spear]!"

Touching the earth wall that protected him, Rest cast another spell. Sharp spikes emerged from the opposite side of the wall, piercing the attacking Ogre.

"[Fire Bolt], [Ice cannon], [Thunder Bolt]!"

For the Ogres at a distance, Rest used long-range magic. Red, blue, and yellow flashes shot out one after another, piercing through the Ogres' bodies.

"Gaaah!"

Realizing they couldn't win individually, several Ogres simultaneously pounced on Rest, attempting to crush him with overwhelming weight.

"[Smoke Screen]!"

Without hesitation, Rest activated his magic. White smoke enveloped him, concealing his form.

"Gaaah!?"

Similarly, the Ogres wrapped in smoke cried out in confusion. They swung their clubs wildly, accidentally attacking each other.

"Fu!"

Taking advantage of the chaos, Rest, in a low posture, dashed forward.

With the magic "[Life Search]" allowing him to grasp the enemy even within the smokescreen, Rest efficiently disposed of each Ogre one by one.

Soon, most of the Ogres emerging from the forest had been defeated.

"Is it over...? Doesn't seem like it."

“Gaaaaaa!"

A particularly large Ogre, at least two sizes larger than those defeated earlier, emerged, knocking down trees in its path. Its red-colored body indicated it was probably a mutated variant – a monster known as an Ogre General.

(This is a higher-level monster than White Fenrir. If it appeared in a human settlement, one or two villages might vanish.)

If it was Rest who had just been taken in by the Rosemary Marquis family, he might not have been able to win. However, the current Rest was different.

Without showing a hint of impatience, he focused his magic power, eyeing the Ogre General.

"[Physical Enhancement] and [Power Boost]!"

Magic that enhanced physical abilities and strengthened arm strength.

"[Earth coat]!"

Magic that coated the body with earth.

He covered the part of his right arm from the elbow down with earth, creating a giant glove with spikes at the tip, enhancing its power.

"[Accelerate]!"

And magic to increase speed.

In an instant, he stepped into the Ogre General's range, swung his right arm.

The spiked glove pierced the Ogre General's thick torso, and the sound of bones breaking reverberated.

"Guwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!?"

The Ogre General screamed. Rest, who was supposed to be in a distant place, had approached in the blink of an eye and delivered an attack. The Ogre General probably couldn't comprehend what had just happened.

(It still has the energy to scream...!)

"[Fire Cannon]!"

A finishing blow. Flames erupted from the tip of the embedded fist.

(This should finish it.)

"Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!"

The Ogre General roared, but its movements gradually weakened until it finally fell silent.

From the mouth, nose, and eye sockets of the Ogre General, flames erupted—a silent scream. The Ogre General fell backward, its body burning from the inside.

"...I won."

As a precaution, Rest used the [Presence Detection] magic to confirm his surroundings. Aside from Rest, there was only one other sign of life present. It seemed all the Ogres had breathed their last.

"Well done."

Applause echoed, and a presence hidden in the shadows behind the trees revealed itself.

"Your battle performance was splendid. This deserves a passing grade."

"Thank you, Dibble-sensei."

The one who appeared was a man in a butler's uniform, none other than Dibble, Rest's martial arts instructor. Though it was a group of Ogres that had burst out of the forest, it was Dibble who had driven them out and outside.

For some time now, Rest had been engaging in combat with monsters accompanied by Dibble as practical training. The monsters he fought were all formidable adversaries. Based on information procured by the Rosemary Marquis through connections with court mages, they frequently embarked on expeditions.

"Mastered skills. There's nothing more I can teach you."

Dibble smiled satisfactorily and voiced his thoughts.

"Next week, you'll have the school's entrance exam. From now on, meet many people at the academy, gain experience, and train yourself in your own way. I'm truly glad I could teach you."

"It's my line, sensei. I'm glad to have learned from you..."

Rest held back the tears, sniffling slightly. Since coming to the Rosemary Marquis family, he had encountered nothing but positive experiences. He vowed to repay this kindness for the rest of his life.

"Well then, let's return. The young ladies are waiting."

"Yes. I think the two of them have finished their exams and returned by now."

The entrance exams for the Royal Academy were held a week earlier for nobles than for commoners. Today was the day of the girls' exams, and they should have returned to the mansion by now.

"There should be no problem for the two of them... but I'm worried. Let's return quickly."

"Yes. How about a competition to see who can get back to the mansion faster?"

Rest and Dibble enhanced their speed with magic and swiftly ran towards the town. Before the forest, there were numerous Ogre carcasses scattered about, to be cleaned up later by servants from the marquis's residence who would arrive afterward.
