Chapter 28: The Lady of the House Has Returned

"Madam Eilish...?"

"Yes. The Rosemary Marchioness, the lady of the house and the mother of the two young ladies, will be returning soon. She should be arriving at the mansion shortly."

One morning, Butler Dibble came to Rest's room and shared this information.

"Come to think of it... I haven't seen the lady of the house. Where has she been?"

"Madam went on an official visit to a neighboring country as an attendant to the queen. Madam is also a highly skilled mage, and she has been friends with the queen since their student days."

Dibble answered Rest's inquiry.

From what he heard, the rightful successor to the Rosemary Marquis family is the lady of the house, and Albert, the marquis, seems to be more like an adopted son-in-law. 

“The Rosemary Marquis family, being a family of magicians, has a tradition of bringing in talented individuals from outside to enhance their magical prowess. The family's notable feature is the high probability of giving birth to beautiful women.”

“….”

I wonder why.

The way he phrased it, implying talent in magic, strangely catches my attention.

"Leaving that aside... I should probably greet her properly, the lady of the house."

"Of course. I've informed Madam about Rest-dono in letters... She has been quite concerned and looking forward to meeting you."

"I see... well, it makes sense."

A teenage boy brought into the mansion from outside.

As a mother, I'm sure she must be quite curious about what kind of man he is.

"Alright then. I'll go greet her. I'm not familiar with the proper etiquette for noble ladies, though."

"Yes, Madam is a generous person who doesn't insist on formalities, so you need not worry... Oh, speaking of which."

Dibble looked out the window.

Following his gaze, Rest saw an elegant carriage arriving in front of the mansion. Pulled by two white horses, the carriage bore the Rosemary Marquis family crest on its side.

"Madam has returned. Shall we go to meet her in these clothes?"

"Sure."

Rest quickly put on the butler's uniform he received, checking himself in the mirror to make sure everything was in order.

Though it was a butler's uniform, he was wearing it publicly because he officially lived in the mansion as a servant.

Once dressed, Rest went to the mansion's entrance, where the Marchioness was just entering.

The woman wore a light green dress, and her wavy golden hair extended down her back. Her facial features were youthful, and even from above the dress, it was clear she had a well-maintained figure.

("Is that the mother of the two girls...? She looks like she's in her twenties at most!")

Eilish Rosemary, the mother of the sisters, and the sisters themselves bore strikingly similar appearances. Rather than a mother and her daughters, they gave off more of an elder sister or relative vibe.

"Welcome back, Mother!"

“Thank you for your hard work on your trip abroad, Mother.”

Viola and Primula, who had come to the entrance before Rest, greeted their mother. Recognizing her daughters, Eilish face lit up, and she embraced them.

"I'm back, my adorable daughters! You look well. I've missed you so much!"

"Welcome back, Mother. How was the neighboring country? We heard it's quite cold there..."

"Yes, it's already snowing there; I can't compete with that. I never thought I'd be wearing a coat at this time of year."

The family engaged in a cheerful conversation. Albert Rosemary, her husband and their father, also approached.

"Eilish, welcome back. I'm glad you're back."

"Yes... I read the letters. Things seem to have gotten quite interesting."

Eilish smiled at her husband and then smoothly shifted her gaze.

The gaze, as if searching for something, captured... was Rest in a butler's uniform, standing a little distance away alongside Dibble.

"...him."

"Oh, Mother! Let me introduce him! This is Rest!"

"He's the one who saved our lives. Rest, this is Mother. He... lives in the mansion."

"Hmm... It seems you two have started bringing men into the house. Must be the age for it, I suppose?"

With a smile, Eilish walked toward Rest, who was somewhat nervous, and he bowed his head.

"I-I'm Rest! I've been taken care of by your daughters!"

"Yeah, nice to meet you. Thanks for helping my daughters. I appreciate it."

"Yes, thank you!"

Eilish’s tone was gentle, and there was an air of welcome as she spoke to Rest.

("I won't allow anyone to harass my daughters"... It seems she won't say something like that.)

Relieved for the time being, Rest was immediately taken aback by Eilish’s following words.

"Well then, I'll change, so wait for me outside."

"Huh...?"

"Shall we have a little fight? I'll beat you up, so be prepared."

"..."

Eilish clenched her fist and declared, leaving Rest with a visibly tense expression.
