Chapter 10: The Ebern Couple Goes Mad

"What have you done! That foolish son of mine!"

In the study of the Ebern Viscount House, Lucas Ebern, the head of the honorable Ebern family, shouted in anger.

His son, Cedric, had caused an unbelievable incident. He had taken the sisters of the Rosemary Marquis family, Viola and Primula, into the forest, putting them in a dangerous situation where they could have lost their lives.

Luckily, the monsters attacking them left just in time, but it was a close call for the two.

"I specifically told you to treat those sisters with the utmost respect... Oh, kuh! My plans are ruined!"

"You! Isn't our son more important right now? Cedric... got injured, you know?"

Lucas's wife, Lisa Ebern, frowned at her agitated husband.

"That's not the time to talk about such things! At this rate, we'll lose our noble status! If Cedric loses his position as the court mage, we'll fall to commoners!"

"What do you mean by losing our noble status?"

Lisa looked genuinely puzzled.

Frustrated by his wife's lack of understanding, Lucas slammed his fist on the table.

"Viola and Primula-san, those two are the daughters of the Marquis Rosemary family. They are the daughters of the head court magician, who is my direct superior!"

The Ebern Viscount House was also a noble family, but their status was vastly different from the Rosemary Marquis House.

The title of an honorary viscount was associated with a position and was considered a "new nobility" or "pseudo-nobility," often looked down upon.

Although Lucas had been granted a noble title temporarily due to his position as the court mage, once he retired, he would return to being a commoner.

If Cedric, Lucas's son, became a court mage, he should have been formally ennobled as a "viscount," succeeding the title held by his grandfather for three generations.

However, an incident that could shatter such a future had occurred.

"If Marquis Rosemary wishes, he could easily dismiss me and drive us out of the court! If Cedric loses his position as a court mage, we will fall to commoners immediately!"

If only he hadn't invited the Rosemary sisters to their estate. The Rosemary Marquis House had two daughters, both known for their exceptional beauty. Lucas had planned to match either of them with Cedric and secure a powerful alliance. However, this plan backfired dramatically.

"By welcoming the Marquis Rosemary’s daughters into our family and gaining Cedric's support, we might have even been promoted to Counts. Yet, that foolish son!"

Even though he had pleaded with them to establish connections through attending the Royal Academy together next year, he had failed. He had explicitly instructed Cedric to make an effort to get along with the sisters, and yet, Cedric had caused such an incident.

When he went to apologize to Marquis Rosemary, he was utterly rejected. He was left with no options. He was not even given a chance to explain.

"This can't be... Is this a joke? We’re going to become commoners?"

Lisa finally seemed to grasp the situation and trembled in disbelief.

"This... This isn't what we agreed upon. Weren't we supposed to become viscounts or nobles?"

"If Cedric had been more responsible, that might have happened. Where did I go wrong in his upbringing...!"

"That child is kind and a good boy... How could he possibly try to harm a woman like that?"

Lucas and Lisa had spoiled Cedric since childhood, rarely scolding him. Cedric's extraordinary magic talent might have played a role in that. They had not even noticed Cedric's warped personality, as he oppressed the weak and acted selfishly.

"I thought Cedric was different from that guy, that failure... Why did this happen!"

"Excuse me, Master."

A butler knocked on the door and entered.

"We've received a letter from Marquis Rosemary’sHouse."

"What!? Bring it here!"

Lucas snatched the letter from the butler's hand and hurriedly opened the sealed envelope with wax.

He unfolded the letter, read its contents, and then froze.

“What…on earth is…this?”

"What is it...? What did the letter say?"

"... "

Lisa, feeling anxious, asked her husband about the letter, but Lucas remained frozen with the letter in his hand.

After a considerable amount of time passed like that, he suddenly lifted his head and informed his wife.

"That failure... He wants to invite Rest to the Marquis Rosemary's mansion. Cedric and I don't have to come, just invite him..."

".... What?"

In response to the unexpected contents of the letter, both Lucas and Lisa were left in a state of shock, contemplating the unexpected turn of events that was unfolding without Rest's knowledge.
