Chapter 35: Escape

We were running two roads from where Arthur and the Dragon were facing each other.

Gale and the others running ahead were about 40 meters away.

A bright blue flash collided with the huge dragon’s chest in front of us, causing its flesh to explode.

The dragon roared and fell down as if trying to grasp something invisible.

BOOOM!

The impact and the buildings that were crushed collapsed, creating a large amount of white smoke.

Gale and the others in front stopped and stood still.

“I need to talk to Gale and the others Mia. Be careful, there’s a risk of being attacked!” I told Mia.

Ad

“Yes.”

I saw Mia nod and put on the armband of the “Gonhirrim Travel Permit” on my arm.

Then, I shouted towards the group.

“Gale! Gale!”

Several armed men turned around.

Gale stopped the men who were in a combat stance.

“Wait! They’re allies. They’re the people from another world with the ‘Gonhirrim Travel Permit’ we talked about yesterday.”

“We don’t trust you! Why are you here?”

“We can’t take risks in this situation. Let’s kill them.”

In the tense atmosphere, a woman spoke up.

“Wait a minute. What did you all come here for?”

The woman, in her mid-20s with silver short hair, had lovely features, but her red eyes, a characteristic of demons, emitted a sharp light.

We recognized her as the princess.

“We came to help our friend Gale. And we believe we can do something,” I said.

The princess looked at Gale.

Gale nodded firmly.

“Karla-sama, their ‘Gonhirrim Travel Permit’ is Master Kukuto’s armband. They can be trusted,” Gale said.

The princess looked at the armband on my right arm and her expression became resolute.

“Fine. We were planning to escape by riding on the dragon called Lido. But now that Lido has fallen, we need to change the plan…”

“We’ll restore the dragon. Please buy us some time. This is our only chance while the visibility is poor.”

“Hey, hey, I’m still talking!”

Ad

“We don’t have time right now! Once the smoke clears, it’s over. Please make a decision quickly.”

The princess glared at Gale, her shoulders trembling.

“Fineee… I trust Gale! Listen, everyone! We’ll follow this person from another world’s plan.

“Moooooooooo… Fine, I believe in Gale! Everyone listen! We’re going with this otherworlder’s strategy.”

I call out to Gail.

“Gale, guide us to the injured part of the dragon. We don’t have much time.”

Without paying attention to the other demons, we entered the white smoke and ran towards the dragon.

“I never thought you would actually come… Thank you,” Gale said, moved.

“Save that for after we escape safely,” I replied.

Gale seemed overwhelmed with emotions, but time was really tight now.

We reached the dragon called Lido without paying attention to the other demons’ condition.

There were several wounds on Lido’s chest, each about three meters long.

Since blood was overflowing, it was hard to tell how deep the wounds were.

Both the one living with these wounds and the one who inflicted them were monsters.

Me and Mia’s skills take time and require trial and error, so for now, we would temporarily heal with potions and escape. This seemed to be the best solution.

“Mia, here’s a strengthening potion. Apply it to the wounds as much as possible.”

“Gale, please apply this to the wounds too.”

I handed them a bag containing 10 potions.

The three of us continuously applied the potions to the wounds.

“Takumi, what’s this? The wounds are closing up rapidly.”

“The blood isn’t recovering, and his stamina isn’t returning either. So it’s a desperate gamble. Don’t be optimistic.”

“Can you still go Lido?”

Gale asked Lido.

“Quuon.”

Lido responded? Could it understand words?

Gale shouted towards the demons.

“Lido has recovered. We can go!”

The princess came running. There were traces of wiped tears on her dirtied cheek.

What about the rest?

This is bad.

The white smoke is starting to clear.

“Gale, are the remaining demons not here yet?”

“They’re staying behind. Someone has to stall the ‘Sword Saint’ or we’ll be done for. It’s already been decided among us. Their lives won’t be wasted. Let’s go!”

All of us moved to the back side of Lido, who was lying down.

There were several harnesses hanging on its back.

The princess and Gale connected the fasteners at the end of the harnesses to their own waist belts.

Mia and I followed suit, connecting the fasteners to our waist belts.

“Lido, you’re doing great!”

Gale shouted.

Lido lifted its fallen massive body and spread its gigantic wings.

Debris around it fell to the ground, and white smoke rose again.

With this, it should be clear to the enemy that Lido has fully recovered and can fly.

I looked around where the battle was taking place, but I couldn’t see anything because of the white smoke.

The scariest thing right now is Arthur’s long-range attacks.

“Mia, please find Arthur.”

“Understood.”

We searched desperately. Lido is about 20 meters tall, Arthur should be able to see Lido.

Lido’s enormous wings flapped.

The intense wind blew away the smoke.

Its massive body lifted off.

“I found him!”

Mia pointed in the direction of Arthur.

He had maneuvered around to the rear of Lido, utilizing the white smoke.

Only Mary stood near Arthur.

The demons who stayed behind to stall were lying in ambush a little distance away.

It felt like our eyes met with Arthur’s.

A chill ran down my spine.

The place where Arthur was standing started emitting a pale blue light.

The light kept expanding.

“Lido, run! Hurry!”, I shouted with all my might.

Any words would do for me. I also shouted to boost my own spirit.

“Gwaaaaaaah!”

With a roar, Lido flapped its wings and accelerated.

“No, it’s no use…”

Gale and the princess turned around upon hearing my words.

“Hey, hey, this has got to be a joke. What is that?”

Damn it, don’t give up!

“Mia, I’ll defend. Be careful not to clash our barriers.”

“U-Understood.”

If the ‘Heart Wall’ barrier neutralizes during Arthur’s attack, it will undoubtedly be fatal.

Alright! Come on!

As if waiting for our timing, the swollen bluish-white flash turned into a bullet of light and was shot at us.

I erected the ‘Wall of the Mind’ barrier.

From the depths of my heart, I rejected this mass of terror.

The octagonal barrier activated. The light bullets fired by Arthur collided with the barrier.

Kyiiiiiiin!

With a high-pitched sound, the barrier and light bullets clashed.

Usually, it’s easy to deflect them. But the barrier distorted and trembled violently.

This is bad. This is bad. This is bad. I’m going to die. I’m going to die. I’m going to die.

My fear reached its limit.

In response to that, the thickness of the barrier increased.

While shattering, the barrier repelled the light bullets and sent them soaring into the sky. And  accelerated even further, and the royal capital disappeared from sight.

――I collapsed, overwhelmed with relief that I survived.

When I turned to face everyone while still seated…

Mia jumped at me, hugged me, and cried.

Well, it was a series of tension and fear, so I guess it can’t be helped.

I placed my right hand on Mia’s back and decided to stay like this until she calmed down.

“Takumi, I’m really glad you’re safe. What was that at the end? Blocking the ‘Sword Saint’s’ attack…”

Gale still seemed surprised. Well, I’m also surprised that I managed to survive.

“Thank you so much. I will never forget this debt.”

The princess expressed her gratitude to us and then turned her body towards the direction of the royal capital, Melkid, and shouted

“Thank you, everyone! I will never forget any of you! And I will definitely repay the elves for this!”

That’s right. I will also repay the elves. Without fail. Absolutely.
