I’m not sure why, but for some reason I find it slightly comforting to see that he can’t recognise what she’s saying.
If the reader and the MC have the same information and the reader can deduce the truth, the main character should be able to too. Dense MCs are such a cheap plot device.
On the surface, I can definitely agree. (EDIT for clarity: After typing everything below, I’d like to say that I also do not outright/only, disagree.)
However readers are aware of story genres, tags, and other information that the MC does not have.
Furthermore, I can tell you from personal experience that, when it is happening to you… there is an element of doubt – of being unsure, second guessing things. Is it real or are you just imagining things? Are you reading too much into it? Am I mistaking it for something it isn’t?
Lastly…. the thing that really nails it for me. Elsewhere on the internet (and even offline), I have met people who are more dense and/or stupid than most of the “dense MCs” that I’ve read about in stories.
I guess for me, it comes down to how well the author shows and phrases things. For me they (dense mc) can be believable, completely. However they can also be done so badly (by the author) that it cheapens an otherwise interesting story so much, that the story becomes completely worthless.

This reminds me of the MC who was reincarnated into a family of rare magic users whose ability was to craft magically animated puppets, he was too dense to realize he was expected to marry his sister until they came right out and told him ‘oh yes you’re going to marry your sister we do that so we can keep the blood in the family pure. Heck your mom and I are the same way, brother and sister.’ He had a nightmare about his sister coming after him and ran like hell immediately, good thing too because reality proved WORSE than the nightmare.
