Chapter 399: The Future of the Two

The wedding between Sita and Mage Baron Wasan’s son was postponed.

The townspeople had heard every rumor surrounding the duel and generally considered the postponement sensible. Nevertheless, on the day originally reserved for the ceremony, the Wasan and Zenyu families held a lavish celebration together.

 The unusual situation confused everyone.

“Why are they holding such a grand party?”

 “Wasn’t the wedding canceled?”

 “Postponed, not canceled.”

“Then what are they celebrating today?”

“Apparently the two families still get along.”

 “Is that really enough reason?”

“Who cares? If they’re celebrating, we might as well join them!”

The townspeople poured into the festivities, and the strange gathering soon became a lively night of drinking, food, and song.

At noon the following day, Tauro and his companions were beating the mayor’s son into the ground.

 There was, admittedly, an explanation.

During the celebration, Mage Baron Wasan had asked Black-Gold Wings to train his son in swordsmanship throughout the party’s remaining stay. He hoped harsh instruction from real adventurers would help the young man reform.

Tauro initially tried to refuse. Black-Gold Wings was still employed by Alimar, and extending the assignment yet again was outside the original request.

Alimar and Sita, however, strongly supported the mayor’s proposal. Surrounded by the united requests of both families, Tauro found himself unable to decline.

“Once the potion finishes healing you, we start again,” Tauro announced.

Ragune and Ankh had begun as the instructors, but neither was suited to gentle teaching.

More accurately, they found it difficult to judge the difference between serious training and excessive force.

The healing potions prepared by House Wasan couldn’t keep pace with the injuries they inflicted, so Tauro had started using his own intermediate-grade potions.

 “Please… I beg you… have mercy…” the mayor’s son whimpered.

The shallow shoulder wound from the duel had made him scream dramatically. The injuries Ragune and Ankh called ‘training’ felt like torture by comparison.

“Everything becomes easier once you grow accustomed to it,” Tauro said while pouring potion over another injury. “Eventually, pain like this may even start to feel pleasant. Probably not, though.”

“That isn’t funny, Leader,” Ankh said, despite chuckling.

Tauro’s restrictions on light magic had been removed, allowing him to use healing spells. However, his regular potion-making practice had left [Magic Storage] overflowing with medicine, so he chose to consume the surplus instead.

 Zion watched from the side.

Her fighting style relied on punches and other blunt strikes, which often caused internal damage that was harder to treat with ordinary potions. For that reason, Tauro refused to let her participate in the mayor’s son’s ‘special training.’

Zion was disappointed. She considered herself Sita’s friend and would clearly have enjoyed contributing.

Despite his constant complaints, the young man endured the brutal training and never attempted to escape.

Perhaps some part of him truly has begun to change.

Mage Baron Wasan had spoken to him seriously after the duel. Sita had also chosen not to abandon him completely. Their words seemed to have affected him.

For one full week, he would endure Black-Gold Wings’ instruction and demonstrate through action that he intended to reform.

Several days into the training, Sita came to observe.

At first, she watched anxiously while Ragune and Ankh knocked the young man down again and again. Before long, she could no longer remain still.

Tauro handed her a potion. Sita hurried to the fallen trainee and began treating him herself.

She wasn’t acting solely from obligation. Seeing the young man struggle without fleeing had genuinely moved her.

Perhaps their marriage can become a happy one after all.

Tauro had disliked the thought of Sita entering a loveless marriage, so the change eased some of his concern.

Sita seemed to understand. She looked toward Tauro and Zion, nodded silently, and smiled.

There is no need for us to interfere in their relationship any further.

Tauro and Zion reached the same conclusion.

“Their relationship is their business,” Tauro told the exhausted trainee. “The special training is ours. Raise your sword as soon as the treatment is complete.”

 A week passed.

The mayor’s son asked Sita to marry him again, and this time she accepted. Preparations for the wedding resumed.

“Can someone really change from a person you dislike into a soulmate in only a week?” Tauro wondered aloud.

He knew little about romance, but watching the two of them had left him thoughtful.

“What about you, Tauro-sama?” Zion asked.

She had lowered the misty hood of her armor, revealing her cat ears.

 “What do you mean?”

 “Do you have a soulmate?”

“A soulmate? I have no idea. I may not understand my own feelings when the time comes. Perhaps mine will pass directly in front of me without my noticing.”

Tauro laughed and tried to dismiss the question.

 “Who’s Aeris?” Zion asked suddenly.

Ragune had apparently spoken about Black-Gold Wings’ former member, and Zion had become curious.

“Aeris…” Tauro murmured. “I wonder what she is doing now. She left adventuring behind to fulfill her responsibilities as a marquis’s daughter.”

 “Ragune-san says she’s doing well.”

“That’s what I hear too. She seems happy spending time with her new twin brother and sister. But why are you so concerned about someone you have never met?”

“Because I want Tauro-sama to be happy!”

 Tauro tilted his head.

“…With Aeris-san…” Zion added softly, then trailed off as though she had said too much.

“I’m already happy,” Tauro replied with a smile. “I can continue adventuring with companions like you, Ragune, and Ankh.”

He completely failed to understand what Zion had been trying to ask.
