Chapter 83: Studying the Holy Dragon’s Ecology

That evening became an impromptu welcome celebration for Mira.

We hadn’t known whether a holy dragon ate ordinary food, but Mira accepted everything offered and appeared to enjoy it. Perhaps mana wasn’t their only source of nourishment. I would ask Mars later.

He would probably record the answer at extraordinary speed.

“Mira doesn’t seem to dislike anything,” Rosalia said.

“What about fruit?” Cain asked. “Here.”

“Kyu!”

Mira happily devoured the piece he offered. Fruit seemed to be their favourite. Should their meals be centred around it?

We also tried bathing them. I had wondered whether they would dislike water, but they remained perfectly calm. Once soaked, however, their fluffy coat collapsed so completely that they resembled an entirely different creature.

“Mira, does anything itch?”

“Kyu!”

I couldn’t tell what that answer meant. Mira had spoken while inside the egg, so perhaps they would learn ordinary speech eventually. For now, I could at least distinguish happiness from distress by the tone of each ‘kyu.’

To be safe, I washed them in a basin rather than placing them in the main bath.

What had we learned so far? Mira understood almost everything we said, but could vocalise only ‘kyu.’ Since I expected them to communicate telepathically one day, that might not matter.

“You’re drawing mana from me on your own, aren’t you?”

“Kyu.”

“So I don’t need to send it deliberately every time?”

“Kyu.”

I still understood nothing, but Mira seemed unconcerned. If there was a problem, they would surely show some sign. Until then, I would observe carefully.

After the bath, Rosalia was waiting. She carried Mira to the hot-and-cold air blower and dried their fur. Mira sat quietly in the warm breeze.

“Father, what happened to the air blower you took to the royal castle?”

I asked while he relaxed in the sitting room.

“I couldn’t present it to His Majesty personally after all that commotion. I left it with the guards, so it should have reached him by now.”

“I see. I’m rather frightened of my next visit to the castle.”

I had a bad feeling.

“Have you been summoned again?”

“No. Her Majesty, Chloe, and Caro looked miserable when they had to part from Mira, so I thought I might give them stuffed toys modelled after them.”

“I see. Exercise restraint. At this rate, you’ll become a stuffed-toy maker instead of a magic pharmacist.”

That could never happen.

Probably.

“Father, did Grandmother truly ask for me to become a magic pharmacist in the Heine Margraviate?”

“You noticed, did you? She asked me to help you become an excellent magic pharmacist, but she didn’t specify where.”

“Then…”

Father nodded.

“I was the one who wanted you to remain in our lands. The frontier needs what you can do. Besides, life in the royal castle would be suffocating for you, would it not?”

He winked mischievously. My father had lied to His Majesty without hesitation—and saved me completely.

“Thank you, Father.”

I bowed deeply. I couldn’t compete with him.

Before returning to my room, I asked a servant for spare pelts and fabric. I had only enough material for one stuffed toy, but I could at least begin.

“Big brother!”

“Kyu! Kyu!”

Rosalia entered carrying Mira.

Mira, I wasn’t one of your playmates. Looking at me expectantly wouldn’t make me abandon my work.

“Big brother, is that…?”

“I’m making gifts for Her Majesty and the others.”

“Oh.”

Rosalia’s expression immediately darkened.

Naturally, I would have to make one for her too. Evidently, having the real Mira beside her wasn’t enough. Perhaps she wanted to preserve their adorable infant appearance even after they grew.

“Of course yours is included. You’ll simply have to wait a little.”

“Thank you!”

She brightened at once and hugged Mira.

Why had they come to my room in the first place?

Before I could ask, Rosalia and Mira had already settled on my bed. Apparently, they intended to sleep there. Fortunately, it was large enough for all of us.

The next morning, I resumed sewing immediately after breakfast. More fabric had arrived, so only speed mattered.

“You’ve made a great deal of work for yourself,” Mother observed.

“Once I deliver the stuffed toys, I plan to return to the territorial capital.”

“I thought you would remain here and return with the rest of us.”

That was an option, but I preferred the freedom of the territorial capital to the restrictions of the royal capital.

I was also worried about our lands. The administration could function without a member of House Heine present, but there were still situations in which our presence was useful.

“There’s little I can do here. Besides, if word spreads that the holy dragon is in the royal capital, the townhouse may be surrounded.”

“That’s true. Returning quietly to the territorial capital may be safest.”

Mother looked troubled as she imagined the disturbance.

“My Lady,” a servant announced, “a letter has arrived from the Master.”

“Oh? Has something happened?” Mother opened it. “Julius is to come to the royal castle immediately after lunch.”

“Understood.”

This was probably about the hot-and-cold air blower.

The stuffed toys would be finished by noon, so the timing was convenient. I could deliver them and inform everyone that I would soon leave the royal capital.
