Chapter 73: A Royal Castle Date—with an Extra Guest
We completed one hot-and-cold air blower that day. Rosalia and I had already made several together, so our work proceeded quickly.
The insulating wood had been cut to my specifications. All it needed was a little polishing before installation.
Alex and Cain stared at the finished device in admiration.
“You two are remarkable,” Alex said. “You already work like genuine magic-tool craftsmen.”
“I never expected Rosalia to be able to make something like this,” Cain added.
Rosalia stood proudly beside me and immediately began the safety test. Even when the manufacturing process seemed flawless, checking the final product remained essential. A creator was responsible for ensuring it worked safely.
The device whirred to life. Strong air, weak air, warm air, and cool air all functioned properly. While my brothers amused themselves with the controls, Mother entered.
“You all seem to be enjoying yourselves. It’s good to have the family together again. Has the device been completed?”
“Mother! Yes, the hot-and-cold air blower is finished.”
Rosalia ran into her arms. Holding her, Mother approached the device.
“May I try the magic tool that dries hair?”
“Of course. I’ll show you how to operate it.”
As one of its creators, Rosalia gave a precise demonstration. She explained not only how to dry hair but also how the device could warm or cool a room.
Perhaps she possessed a talent for presenting and selling magic tools.
“Julius, you have taught Rosalia another unusual skill,” Alex said.
“She enjoys it. I didn’t force her.”
“That may be true, but you encourage her rather enthusiastically.”
Naturally. I was on Rosalia’s side and wanted her to pursue whatever interested her. In a world where people could never do what they loved, life would lose half its value.
That evening, everyone tried the air blower after bathing. It proved popular not only with the women but also with Father and my brothers. I could dry my own hair with magic and had underestimated how useful the device would be to others.
“Julius, when will the presentation model be ready?” Father asked.
“Tomorrow, I think.”
“It’s an excellent magic tool. We should offer it to His Majesty.”
Father clearly approved. Evidently, people with short hair also disliked waiting for it to dry. The device might sell even better than I had expected. I should ensure the blueprint reached craftsmen as soon as possible.
I completed the internal mechanism before bed, leaving only the decorative casing for the next morning.
I had expected to rest after the memorial, yet my schedule was becoming busier by the hour.
After breakfast, I resumed work immediately. The royal carriage was due around ten. We would eat lunch at the castle and return before dark, so the visit would consume nearly the whole day.
I carved the walnut insulation while pretending to use a knife. In truth, Craft performed almost all the work. The knife was merely a prop; carving the design by hand would have taken all day.
Rosalia watched in admiration, unaware of the deception. I felt rather guilty.
I carved the national bird into the wood and incorporated the kingdom’s flag and the royal crest. Fortunately, I had studied the symbols on the castle gate the previous day. I added the mysterious vine pattern around the edges as well.
With Craft doing the difficult work, the decoration was soon complete. I attached the panels, brushed on a thin coat of varnish, and used Drying to finish it quickly.
“There. We completed a test yesterday, but we should check it once more before presenting it.”
“That carving is beautiful, Big brother. Please decorate the one in my room too.”
“When we return home, I will. Decide what picture you would like.”
“I will!”
The final test revealed no problems. The royal family could receive it safely.
Soon afterwards, a royal carriage arrived for us. I changed quickly and prepared to leave.
“The presentation air blower is over there,” I told Father. “Please arrange its delivery.”
“It’s already finished? Very well. I’ll see that it reaches the palace. Travel safely.”
Father and Mother saw us off. Rosalia sat beside me, naturally.
The journey was uneventful, and unlike the previous day, we entered the royal castle without delay. The carriage stopped at what appeared to be a private arrival point reserved for royalty. A knight met us and escorted us directly to a guest room.
I sat among the expensive furniture, feeling distinctly out of place, until Chloe arrived.
“Did I keep you waiting, Julius? Rosalia?”
“Not at all. Thank you for inviting us, Your Highness.”
“Thank you,” Rosalia added.
We both bowed formally. Chloe immediately waved us upright.
“Stop that. You make it sound as though we’re strangers. I’m showing you around today, so when we’re alone, behave normally.”
“I understand. I’ll try.”
I couldn’t act too casually before servants or courtiers, but among the three of us it should be safe.
And so our tour—or perhaps our date at the royal castle, with Rosalia as an extra guest—began.
