Chapter 54: Hot-and-Cold Air Blower

The next morning, after Rosalia and I completed our daily watering of the medicinal herb garden, I wrote letters to Lady Fabienne and Edward.

Would you like to attend a tea party at House Heine? I wrote. You may bring friends with you.

If the plan succeeded, introductions through the two of them might help me make several new friends. The more connections I formed within the Heine Margraviate, the more support I might have when I eventually became independent.

I couldn’t inherit the territory, so I needed the ability to support myself. I intended to live as a magic pharmacist, which meant earning money by producing or licensing magic potions.

After sending the letters, I went to inspect the knight order’s facilities. Problems might have appeared in the temporary showers overnight, and as their designer, I couldn’t simply ignore them.

Rosalia had lessons with her tutor that morning and therefore couldn’t leave the mansion. Predictably, she protested that she wanted to come.

I finally persuaded her by promising to teach her more about magic tools that afternoon if she studied diligently during the morning. If this continued, I might ask whether our lesson schedules could be aligned. It would inconvenience the tutor, but Rosalia might study more willingly.

A knight greeted me as soon as I reached the training grounds.

“Good morning, Lord Julius.”

“Good morning. How are the shower stalls?”

“They’re working perfectly. Everyone is delighted. The soap has begun to harden as well. Some of the mages suggested drying it with magic…”

Were they truly so desperate for soap? I should have taught them the process much earlier.

“You may use magic, but only if it doesn’t interfere with training or exhaust anyone.”

“Yes, my lord. I’ll make certain everyone understands.”

The knight answered with a cheerful smile. That was the proper response. Soap was useful, but it mustn’t distract the knight order from its primary duties.

I inspected the temporary showers and the rapidly advancing construction site, reminding everyone not to push themselves.

The building had already progressed far beyond what I expected. Were they working through the night? I sincerely hoped not.

That afternoon, I kept my promise to Rosalia. We worked in a sunny salon where the autumn light made the room comfortably warm.

I reviewed and corrected the blueprint for the hot-and-cold air blower. After producing enough units for the household, I intended to sell the design to the usual magic-tool shop, so the drawings had to be clear enough for other craftsmen to follow.

Beside me, Rosalia shaped the casing of her lamp magic tool by hammering an iron plate into a simple square box. It was basic work, but essential. A magic-tool maker needed to know how to create a suitable casing.

“Big brother, it’s finished!”

“You did very well. Now we need to install yesterday’s magic circle inside the box.”

We placed the magic stone in the base and used magic ink to connect it to the light-producing circle. Before completing those connections, however, we needed a switch.

“Rosalia, copy this switching circle onto the small iron plate.”

“Yes!”

She began immediately, her eyes shining with concentration. Perhaps she truly might become a magic-tool maker one day.

While she worked, I drew the circles for my blower. I already understood their shapes and patterns, so reproducing them on the plates didn’t take long.

I then formed the cylindrical casing by curving an iron sheet little by little with a hammer. I fused the seam with fire magic, creating a strong joint.

At the bottom, I installed fittings for the magic stone and control switches according to the blueprint. Near the top, I cut circular vents and covered them with wire mesh. I rounded every edge carefully to prevent injuries and keep dust from entering.

“That should be enough for a trial. Let’s test it.”

“You’ve finished already?”

Rosalia looked up in astonishment. She had been so absorbed in her own work that she hadn’t noticed my progress. The switching circle in her hands was nearly complete.

“The casing isn’t finished, but the mechanism should operate.”

“As expected of you, Big brother.”

The prototype looked rugged and metallic, but Rosalia didn’t seem to care. I explained the controls as we prepared the test.

“This knob adjusts the airflow. We’ll begin at the middle setting.”

“What does the other knob do?”

“It controls the temperature.”

“It has a red arrow and a blue arrow.”

“Turn it towards red for warm air and towards blue for cold air.”

“Cold air…”

“Yes. It could cool a room during summer.”

Rosalia nodded thoughtfully. She was only six, but she understood the concept remarkably well.

“For this test, turn the temperature slightly towards the red arrow.”

“Like this?”

“Exactly. Now press the button.”

“I’m pressing it!”

A soft whoosh sounded as air flowed from the upper opening. It gradually became warmer.

“It’s warm!”

“Do you think it could dry your hair?”

“I’m certain it can. Let’s try it tonight!”

Rosalia beamed.

I had done well.
