Chapter 340: Let Us Make Them Immediately
Once Mother accepted my explanation, she continued studying the swimsuit sketches. Perhaps one of the designs appealed to her.
“Mother, I can make one for you as well. Fabienne likes this frilled one-piece, and I was thinking of making it yellow. What do you think, Fabienne?”
I looked to her for confirmation.
“Yellow sounds lovely. I am looking forward to seeing it.”
“Then I will make it properly.”
We smiled at one another. The nearby servants watched with warm expressions. It was embarrassing, but far better than rumours that Fabienne and I did not get along.
“Could you make this design for me?” Mother asked.
“The two-piece with the fitted top and shorts? Certainly. What colour would you like?”
“The same yellow as Fabienne's.”
“Understood.”
It was Mother's way of welcoming her. She was treating Fabienne like a daughter.
Fabienne understood as well, and her face brightened.
“Thank you, Mother.”
A harmonious relationship between them was a wonderful thing.
After Mother went to the bath, Fabienne and I left the salon. The cool drinks had refreshed me, and I felt ready to work.
I parted from Fabienne and returned to my room to make the swimsuits.
Naturally, Nero waited outside. I did not want him to witness the Thread Creation skill and begin asking questions I could not answer.
Skills were extraordinarily convenient, yet little formal research had been done on them. Most people activated them instinctively.
Unlike magic, skills did not follow fixed chants, gestures, or procedures, so their activation conditions remained unclear.
I could not teach someone to acquire a skill because I had gained mine by assigning skill points. Rosalia had developed Craft through effort and practice, but my own experience offered no useful training method.
“There is no point worrying about what I cannot explain. Someday, someone will research skills properly.”
With that conclusion, I created the required thread, sewed the garments, and went to bed.
The following day, shortly before bath time, I asked Mother and Fabienne to meet me in the salon for the demonstration. I deliberately avoided mentioning the project at breakfast or dinner; Brother Alex and the others already had enough concerns.
The swimsuits would probably never become a commercial product, but the family would still find them interesting.
“They are finished already?” Mother exclaimed. “As expected of you, Julius.”
“They are wonderful!” Fabienne added.
The two yellow bathing garments lay on the table. Mother and Fabienne examined the fabric, stretched it gently, and checked the stitching while the servants watched.
“This material is unusual,” Mother said. “It stretches, dries quickly, and will not become transparent when wet. What is the thread made from?”
“Perhaps it is better not to ask.”
Mother fell silent and examined it more carefully.
The thread had been created directly through my skill, but she probably imagined that it came from some rare monster—perhaps a giant spider.
Fabienne tilted her head, not understanding the implication.
It was better not to mention giant spiders around her. I could explain the truth privately before she investigated on her own and frightened herself.
“Then I will try mine immediately,” Mother said.
“So will I,” Fabienne replied.
Fabienne's eager look made her intention obvious: she wanted us to share the bath again. That was fine. I had also made a simple swimsuit for myself and another for Nero.
If everyone wore proper bathing garments, a shared bath would no longer create awkward situations.
“Are you certain the sizes are correct?” Mother asked.
“Yes. They should fit.”
I had used Appraisal to obtain the general measurements required for tailoring. The elastic fabric provided additional room for error.
Mother studied me with an amused expression.
“And how are you so certain?”
Fabienne immediately became embarrassed.
This was dangerous. Admitting that Appraisal had supplied the measurements would only create more questions.
“I estimated from their clothing, and the fabric stretches. Even if my estimate is slightly wrong, the garments should still fit.”
Mother sighed.
“Your grandfather truly taught you too many peculiar things.”
She had apparently decided that Grandfather had taught me how to estimate garment sizes.
Thank you, Grandfather.
Once again, you had preserved my dignity.
Good thing he’s dead. Although, if he was alive, I could still see it now working well for his grandfather anyways. xD
