Chapter 139: The Immediate Trouble Is Over
When I returned to the mansion, Mira flew straight towards me. They had clearly been waiting.
“I’m home. The operation succeeded, so we should be able to visit Mount Claire again soon.”
“Kyu!”
Mira circled me happily.
We still needed to wait until the prisoners had been questioned. I didn’t know what interrogation methods the adults would use.
For a moment, I considered making a truth-inducing potion, but a drug that interfered with another person’s mind violated my principles. I decided to leave the matter to the authorities.
Information was obtained that same day. The prisoners’ base was discovered, and the available knights raided it, capturing one additional agent and confiscating everything inside.
While I played with Mira in the salon, Father summoned me to his office.
“Thanks to you, the situation is under control. Those we captured were agents of the Lazar Empire.”
“I understand.”
“I’m sorry, Julius, but I can’t tell you anything more.”
His expression made it clear that the political details were classified.
“That’s fine. As long as the territory is safe, I don’t need to know.”
Father studied me.
“You’re a strange child. You accept this too easily.”
“Even if you tried to explain the details, I would stop you. I don’t want unnecessary involvement in an international dispute.”
A ten-year-old child had no place managing conflict between nations. Adults could handle that burden.
“The captured agents will be sent to the royal capital. His Majesty will decide what to do with them.”
“Then I no longer need to act in your place. That’s a relief.”
“Not so quickly.”
My reputation among the visiting nobles had apparently become too good. They continued requesting that I attend the greeting rounds, so Father wanted me to keep representing House Heine.
I had tried so hard to appear gracious and competent that I had created more work for myself. I should have been blunt and awkward.
The next day, I resumed greeting visitors, this time alongside Father. Only then did I realise that he wouldn’t have relaxed the border deployment unless the Kingdom of Lund Al had been cleared of involvement.
The reduced vigilance was reassuring. An immediate war now seemed unlikely.
“Father, after the greetings, may I take Mira to Mount Claire?”
He hesitated, but finally nodded.
“You may, provided you take an escort.”
“Thank you!”
At least one part of my summer would finally return to normal.
