Chapter 57: Various Tribes

Day 152 of my life in another world

All the trade routes are now open, and we are fully prepared to receive the immigrants. Today, the Merinards are finally returning.

Yesterday, all work was suspended and a banquet was held to celebrate the opening of the trade route. The party went on from morning till night.

There was no real entertainment, but there was good drinking and good food. It was a satisfying enough day just to talk about our daily accomplishments and each other's worlds.

Everyone is positive about the idea of adding new residents, and the whole village is in a welcoming mood. It was under these circumstances that the day arrived.

The number of people to be accepted was large this time. As a contingency plan, the residents of the village were asked to do their own work as far as they could see. Touya and his dungeon team were also working in the village today as combatants.

Less than two hours after breakfast, we receive a call from the scouts. He told us that Merinard and his party had come to the vicinity of the village and were on their way with four horse-drawn wagons.

“They are very early. Did they leave at the opening of the gates at dawn?”

“They must have come early, taking into account the time it takes to receive the visitors.”

"I guess so. --Then, everyone, please follow the arrangements.”

“Yes, sir!”

Twenty minutes after the scout's report, four carriages begin to come into view. At the head of them was Merinard. The horses in this world were ordinary, but somehow I felt a fantasy-like atmosphere.

“Hello, Merinard, I am glad to see you again.”

“Yes, Chief, I feel the same way.”

"How about it, the road has become much more comfortable, hasn't it?”

“Yes, I had heard about it from Urgan, but I was surprised at how good the road surface was, as well as the speed of development.” Merinard replied with a smile.

"So, are those people your family? Please introduce them."

Next to Merinard is a nice, calm lady, and behind her is a woman in her twenties and a boy about ten years old.

I was told that the family was also sheep people, so I was not surprised to see them, but I guess their only external features are their horns and tails. They look no different from the human race.

“I am Merinard's wife, Merissa. We will make every effort to become villagers as well, and we look forward to working with you.”

Following Merissa, Merimus' wife and child politely greeted me. Their names are Merise and Merinand.

Are they named Merry because they are sheep people, or is the other-worldly translation doing its job in an easy-to-understand way? That is unknown, but it was going to be confusing if more similar names were added. No, we already do. ......

After the introductions of family members and employees, the slaves get off the wagons. After checking everyone's face, I gave them permission to reside, including the slaves I had brought with me.

Haruka is waiting next to me, and I intend to leave everything to her after this. The trading company also told them in advance about the village and the loyalty level. As for the slaves, I have already confirmed their willingness to become villagers, so there should be no problem.

“The trading company staff can come in. The others will have to wait a little longer.”

“Of course. Haruka, how about our employees?”

“They are all fine.”

“I see, I am relieved too.”

While saying that, Haruka secretly told me about everyone's status. However, no one seemed to have any particular problems.

The two remaining people are Merinard and his escort, and the non-slaves are asked to go into the village. Tsubaki would be in charge of guiding them around the village and organizing their belongings.

“I'll start with the one who knows Beritoa, please come this way.”

I called Beritoa next to me and exchanged greetings with the blacksmith. By the way, this person is not a slave, but a commoner.

“Uncle, it's been a while!”

“Hey, Beritoa! It's been a long time.”

“I was not able to do so much on my own. I'm glad you're here.”

"What the hell, if you're going to move here, why don't you give me a call, too? You're not very friendly.”

“I'm sorry. I didn't forget about you.”

The bear man, whom Beritoa calls her uncle, is a long-time friend of the family.

This bear man is named Bears, and he is as burly as a bear can be. He is 40 years old and has been single all his life, and he has been thinking that it is better to be single because it is easier to be single. He is a man I can relate to.

“Are the Bears also out of business because of the Japan trading company?"

I asked him bluntly.

"Well, it was close to that, but we managed to survive. The main reason I decided to move here was the potatoes in this village.”

Bears, you too. I'm not sure if it's a tribal thing or what. It's a ...... mystery.

“If you become a resident of the village, you can eat all the potatoes you want. Work hard and eat plenty.”

“I'd appreciate that! Village chief, Beritoa, take good care of me!"

Since his loyalty was not a problem, I asked Belitoa to guide him the rest of the way and we parted ways. We then set about preparing to receive the 20 slaves.

After lining them up at the very edge of the village boundaries, we talk to them about life in the village and their loyalty. Right next to me, Haruka is in the process of appraising them.

Since there are a lot of people this time, we decided to have them rest at a tenement outside the boundary for a while after writing down the results of the appraisal. I told them that the reception would start in the afternoon, and asked Urgan and Uruk to escort them.

"Well then, let's go back for now. Haruka, can you invite Sakura and the others to your house?"

"It's been entrusted to me."

Within the next 10 minutes, the main members of the village had gathered. Once everyone was present, the meeting began immediately.

“Now, everyone, I want you to know the status of the slaves who have visited this time. Also, I would like to make a rough decision on how the work will be allocated.”

After telling them this, he read out Haruka's appraisal notes. There are 20 slaves this time, ranging from dogs, cats, wolves and fox beastmen. Many of them were relatively young, ranging in age from 15 years old at the bottom to 30 years old at the top.

“There are so many different races. Come to think of it, is there any kind of chemistry or conflict between the races?"

I was a bit curious, so I asked Rad and Merinard.

"No, there is no conflict. Of course, there is more camaraderie among our own kind.”

“As I said before, we rabbits get a little smoke because of our hearing. But it's not so much a conflict.”

“I see. Next is the results of the evaluation, but it seems that there is no one who stands out."

Unfortunately, there were no skill holders so well. But I will expect the benefit of the church.

“Ten of them have a loyalty level of over 50 and are ready to become villagers. The remaining 10 are mostly in the low 40s, so I guess I can count on that.”

“In such a situation, there are usually one or two suspicious people in the group.”

“I've been talking to the council side about the loyalty thing, too. They wouldn't do anything that would be immediately obvious."

“But there might be people with skills in disguise or something, you know?"

“Even if they did, it would be hard to disguise their loyalty. Even if it is possible to disguise the numerical value, I don't think it is possible to disguise the villager's judgment.”

“I see.  I understand.”

"Feel free to tell me anything else you have in mind. I'll be very grateful.”

(I'm really grateful that you're thinking about various things like this. I can't tell where the holes are with just my own thoughts.)

“I'm going to go back to the story. First, we will accept the 10 people who can enter the village. Until the rest are accepted, I will let them experience mainly farm work.”

“You mean you're going to show the remaining people how life is in the village and make them feel at ease?”

"Oh, and I will also remove the collar of servitude first.”

“What if they run away before they become villagers?”

“I don't care if they run away. They won't be loyal anyway.”

"I see, I understand."

“Next, let's talk about work assignments.”

This time, we would like to allocate a few people to mining operations. I explained that we would first secure a few people to do the work, and then the rest would be allocated mainly to farm work. After getting everyone's approval, I asked him if there was anything else he wanted to do, and he seemed to have a suggestion.

“The number of villagers has increased considerably. Let's get a few full-time cooks.”

“Village cooks, huh?”

A large group of over sixty people. The cooking process, including preparation, is time-consuming. Depending on the work they are engaged in, there may be a time lag between when they eat and when they leave, so the idea was to create a dining hall in the village.

“If there is a cafeteria, people will naturally gather, and it can also be used as a place for socializing.”

“Sounds great, that sounds fun!”

“It could even be a bar at night.”

“That's a good idea. We could renovate the meeting place.”

I myself don't like to drink alcohol, but I know some people like that kind of thing. I thought it would be a good idea to have some entertainment.

“For the time being, we will continue to cook in the plaza as before, but Tsubaki and Rudrug will take care of the construction of the cafeteria and who will be in charge of the food preparation.”

It was a suggestion from Tsubaki, who cooked meals for us every day and was probably quite busy, in fact.

Besides, mining operations in the northern mountains and dungeon hunting in the east would inevitably take them away for a day. I thought it would be nice to send meals via the 『Transfer Goods』 service, but it would also be nice to get lunch boxes from the cafeteria in the morning ...... and go out.
