Chapter 28: Rudrug the Carpenter

Day 33 of living in another world

At last, on this day, the long-awaited day had arrived. The harvesting of the fields of rice ears, which had been so fruitful, had begun. It is hard work to harvest a large area by hand, but with the increase in the number of villagers, the rice is being harvested smoothly.

Meanwhile, preparations were underway to build houses for the rabbits. Rado-san was in charge of construction in the village. Under his direction, materials are being transported and processed, and the ground foundation is being laid. Touya and Natsuki, as well as the earth magician Roa, were helping.

The plan was to build six houses: one for the chief's house, four for married couples, and one for single women. Construction was underway for a total of six houses.

“Tsubaki, may I take a look at the houses?”

"Yes, you can leave this part to me. Have a good day.”

“If you need anything else, just call me.”

Leaving the harvesting to Tsubaki and the others, we headed for the west area where the living quarters are located. And they were busy moving around here, too.

“Ah, good work, Village Chief! Is the harvest going well?”

Natsuki, who was processing board materials, called out to me. She was still mass-producing building materials with excellent hands.

“The harvesting process is going well. How's it going over here?”

"It's already amazing! Look at that. It looks like the framework is already completed!”

When I looked in the direction Natsuki told me to look, I saw that the framework of the triangular roof had indeed been completed.

“Oh, I've seen it in history textbooks, but this is the first time I've seen the ...... actual thing.”

What I saw there was a Jomon-era pit dwelling itself. The ground had been dug down and there was a triangular pyramid framework around it. I was excited to see the real thing for the first time.

“It's so nice, I wish I could live there too!”

Oh me! And me! That's what I thought, but I held back and just nodded.

"Keep up the good work.”

With that, i walked to the construction site.

"Good job everyone. Looks like things are going well here too."

"Oh, chief, I've got this under control!”

Rudrug, the carpenter, replied cheerfully in a tone that didn't suit his rabbit ears. He had a slight Edokko(child of Edo) tone to his voice, so he was likely to say something like, "Teyande!” (A type of japanese accent)

“I've talked to Natsuki about it, and I was just admiring your deftness.”

"Of course! I'd like to say, but it's thanks to Roa's earth magic and your processing skills!”

His tone was like that, but he didn't forget to praise others, so he sounded like a good-natured uncle

"Hey, old man Rudo! I'm useful, too!”

"Hmm? The boy's arm strength is great, too. You’re a big help too, strong man.”

"Oh, I see. I hope you know that. ......”

Touya is shy. It's always interesting to see him being embarrassed by being praised.

"Come to think of it, how did you bring all these carpentry tools? Did’nt you get attacked by goblins?"

"Yes, I was attacked. But these tools are all I have. I can't just throw it away!"

"Well, it's very important."

I heard later that Rudrug's father and grandfather had been carpenters in the village for generations, and that the tools were like mementos.

“Rudrug, is it possible to build something like my house?”

"Yes, something like that, but it would have to be made of wood or stone.”

“Then, after you have finished building everyone else's house, please plan to build a larger one, like a meeting house.”

Rudolph pondered for a moment before agreeing. ......

“But hey, I want at least more nails. The ones we got from the chief may be of good quality, but there aren't enough of them.”

“That's right. You can get the nails by going to the city, but there is an occupied settlement on the way there. I talked to Rad yesterday, but we still hadn't come up with a good idea.”

"We'll find a solution soon, with the matter of shopping in town. Just make sure you have a plan.”

“I'll take care of that. I'll take care of that perfectly.”

And so I left and returned home, where I would continue to worry about the situation for the rest of the day.

Day 34 of living in another world

Today, as yesterday, we are working separately on the rice harvest and building work. Progress in the harvesting work was unexpectedly good, so we were able to allocate more manpower to the construction work.

Now we are in the middle of a meeting with the main members of the team. An hour had passed since the meeting began.

"All right, let's go over the issues that have come up so far."

Problems

.We are running low on salt. Even if we cut back, we only have about 10 days left.

.There are not enough cooking utensils. We can't cook enough for the number of people at once.

.Lack of nails and tools. We can't start building a meeting house and dormitory.

.The transferees in the occupied village are in the way. We have to take a big detour to get to the town.

.There is no money. We need to prepare currency or sellable goods.

.We don't know what's going on in town. There is no way to know what is going on in the city, and going there carelessly could be dangerous.

The list of things that are not there is impressive: .......

“I guess these are the most immediate problems.”

"This much, or rather, there are so many problems..."

“Well,......, what about priorities?”

“First of all, salt, I suppose. It is also connected to the problem of preparing the price to purchase it.”

In response to Tsubaki's recommendation to secure salt, Touya and Natsuki replied,

"What about going to the southern seas?”

“Even if we could get to the sea, Touya, we wouldn't know how to get salt, would we? Besides, we don't have any tools.”

It was a plan to get salt in the southern sea, but... It is difficult at present due to safety concerns. And was rejected straight away.

“Then we could buy it in the city. Then we would have to decide what to sell.”

“That's one thing, but we also have to consider the dangers of the city.”

It's a very difficult question, but... Just like Touya said, we have to go to the city even if it takes some risks.

“I don't think we need to think about the dangers of the city at this point. If it's not the village headman, there's no problem.”

“What? What do you mean?”

Natsuki was puzzled by Touya's comment.

“Even if there is some danger, as long as the village head is safe, it's fine. That is the absolute rule of Nanashi Village, right?”

“I see. As long as the village head doesn't go, there will be no problem.”

The two of them are talking without hesitation, but even I have no intention of letting go of this valuable talent. The conversation was about to take a dangerous turn, so I added a few words of caution.

“I understand what you two are prepared to do. Let's decide the price for the purchase and who will go for it, taking into account the risks involved.”

“Chief, may I speak up as well?”

“What's up, Rad, feel free to speak up.”

Rad, who had been watching the situation quietly, opened his mouth for the first time. While I was waiting to see if he had any strange ideas, he spoke the following words with a little tension in his voice.

"Those of you who intend to go to the city, please identify yourself immediately. But not those with the slightest hesitation."

Suddenly, he said this while looking at me. Then, after a few moments, he nodded and began speaking again. Apparently, he was checking with the rabbits. I was scared because he was talking while looking at me. ......

"Chief, seven of us, including myself, are willing to go to the town.”

“I'll leave it to you to coordinate the numbers. Thank you very much.”

Depending on the situation, if we Japanese go to the city, there is a possibility that we will be turned away or that our presence here will be known. Frankly, I was very grateful for Rad and his team's offer.

“Then we just need to figure out what to sell.”

“What can we sell in the village: rice, potatoes, and vegetables?”

“I don't want to sell rice, I don't want to put the rice out in the open, because it is Japanese rice, and people might get suspicious about the existence of the village.”

“Village chief, you can sell the materials of the monsters in the warehouse. Especially the large spider web can be sold at a good price if you process it.”

Rad reminded me of the materials that were left in the warehouse.

“Monster materials, huh? But you can't process them, can you? I don't have the tools.”

“If weaving tools are available, Rudrug can make them. If Natsuki-dono helps us, I think we can do it in two days.”

"Oh, of course I will help you. I'm interested in it too!”

“Then, Natsuki, get started right away.”

Having said that, Natsuki got up from her seat and headed towards Rudrug.

“Rado, you can process threads, right?”

"Yeah, all the women of the tribe. As long as you have the tools, you'll be fine."

In the end, we set the scheduled departure date to 10 days later. Under the goal of trading with the city, each one of us moves into action.
