Chapter 314: Electric Shock
To verify the cause, I called Helena out.
“Thank you for coming. How is your lower back?”
“I’m not sure if it’s thanks to the ointment Lua-san gave me, but I’ve recovered enough to move around.”
Helena jumped in place right there, demonstrating that the pain had subsided. Even though she had been in considerable pain yesterday, despite it being just a bruise… the effect was astonishing. Lua-san had said it was a special ointment passed down in the Lusanso Knights, so it must truly be an incredible ointment.
“I’m relieved to see you seem alright. That said, I apologize for asking this so soon after yesterday, but could you approach Elec and Trick’s cage once more? I want to figure out why they discharged electricity.”
“Of course, that’s fine. I wanted to know the reason myself.”
Helena, who readily agreed, immediately headed toward the two mice’s cage. Sheila-san and I positioned ourselves a short distance away, observing Elec and Trick’s behavior.
“I can avoid the electric shock if I know it’s coming. Please, come at me anytime.”
Saying this, she cautiously opened the cage door. Whereas they would normally amble out when it was us, the moment they recognized it was Helena, Elec and Trick began moving as if to rush outside.
The two tried to exit simultaneously, competing with each other, and got jammed at the cage entrance—and in that instant, crackling electricity flew toward Helena.
Thanks to being on guard this time, she avoided it without difficulty… but indeed, they really were discharging electricity. And all she had done was open the door. However, Elec and Trick didn’t look frightened when they discharged; if anything, they looked like they were having fun.
“Master, how was it?”
“They really did discharge electricity. They didn’t look disgusted or frightened. Rather, they even seemed happy.”
“Could it be… they discharged electricity because they were too happy?”
At Sheila-san’s words, I found myself convinced. Like a dog that pees from excitement, this seemed similar—Elec and Trick appeared to be experiencing something comparable.
Should I call it a “joy shock”?
At any rate, I was relieved to know that Helena wasn’t disliked, nor had she done anything to upset them.
“I think so too. It seems their emotions got too heightened and the electricity just came out.”
“Hmm… I’m happy to be liked, but it’s a bit sad to be shocked.”
“It seems they can only discharge once per day, so I think it’s safe now. Please pet them.”
“Is that so? I’m a bit scared… but I’ll try.”
When Helena cautiously reached out her hand, Elec and Trick leaped onto it. They were hopping around and spinning in circles—clearly in high spirits.
“They really do look happy. I’m glad we found the cause… but it’s dangerous if we don’t take countermeasures. Even though it should be surrounded by insulators, the floor was scorched. In the worst case, it could start a fire.”
“You’re absolutely right. I’ll go consult with Rozzo-san. We might also find ways to utilize the electricity, so it would be best to act quickly.”
“Understood. Please leave the farm work to us.”
Seen off by Sheila-san and Helena, I hurried to Rozzo-san’s house. Since it was still morning, I was worried he might not be awake, but he came out right away when I knocked.
“Oh, if it isn’t Sato-san! What brings you here so early in the morning?”
“Sorry for the sudden visit. An animal that arrived the other day discharges electricity, and I came to consult about countermeasures and whether we might be able to utilize it.”
“Discharges electricity? I understand countermeasures, but what do you mean by utilize?”
“I was wondering if we could store the discharged electricity. We might not need a generator anymore.”
“…I don’t quite get it! Anyway, come inside and explain in detail!”
I was let into his house, and I explained about electricity. My knowledge was limited, and I wasn’t sure how much got through, but Rozzo-san crossed his arms and thought deeply.
“So electricity is something needed to make all sorts of things move, and it can be handled similarly to magic power!”
“That’s right. In the world I came from, there was no magical power, so we basically made everything run on electricity. So if we can obtain electricity from sources other than generators, we’ll be able to use many more things.”
“Uwahaha! Interesting! Leave it to me!”
“Thank you, Rozzo-san. I’m leaving two chargers with you—please feel free to disassemble one.”
I handed two chargers to Rozzo-san, who had readily agreed. First, I asked him to work on safe countermeasures against the electric shocks.
And, if possible, I asked him to develop a device to store the electric discharges.
The latter might be difficult, but I’m sure Rozzo-san can pull it off.
With hope in my heart, I left Rozzo-san’s house.
